My name then (maiden) was Charmin Gibson, so I totally stole her name, since it was my initials. I spelled it that way (above) and that was pretty much my nic in HS. Stupid, huh? hahaha.......
MY initials are CG since I got married..... but I prefer to think of it as the initials for "Cover Girl"
tee hee!! I'm so important, all my make-up compacts and lipsticks are monogramed!

OMG, Crystal, I used to ALWAYS use that to claim makeup. LOL That's funny.... I've always used 99.9% covergirl stuff, and always thought it was cool having my initials on all of it.
Somehow, though, it was cooler having my last name on awesome sounding guitars.... I shoulda been a modern day bride and kept my own da'mn last name. LOL
Now all I have to claim is that my initials.... CW..... are branded on the outside of Copenhagen cans. hahahah

Hope and Bo are gettin' divorced tomorrow (errr "Salem time".... so y'know.... next month) and Hope is pregnant with Patrick Lockhart's baby.... looks like they're gonna be come an "item" unless Bo can prove that he had nothing to do with covering for Chelsea (who killed Isaac by hittin' him with Bo's SUV) by hiding the evidence to convict her.
Kate has admitted to being behind the whole hiding evidence thing, so I dunno wtf Hope is waitin for...... crazy lady....
Sami's son, Will is missing... has been for a few days.
Missed yesterday's episode, so I dunno what's goin' on with the whole Phillip/Belle/Shawn/Mimi story! When are they gonna find out that Shawn is Claire's father??? DUHN DUHN DUHN!! *dramatic music*

I think you mean 'accepted'.

Actually this whole topic doesn't matter. People's style of writing on the net is as varied as the individual themselves. No one's going to change just because we like or don't like how they type stuff. As in all aspects of life we have to tolerate differences here just like we do anywhere else.
Of course I am stating the obvious. Sorry if I kill the thread. I suggest we keep talking about pantiless (is that a word?) women (a fav topic of mine), and guys that wear panties on their heads.
Back to General Hospital in progress...

I still believe spelling matters. Of course, as a teacher I would perhaps place more emphasis on it than others might. My point concerns the kids who spend so much time on computers these days. When they come to the classroom, they do not know how to write. I listen to business owners around town talk about how illiterate employees are today. One restaurant owner in particular, fired a high school girl because the young lady could not take a telephone number down and spell the owner's name correctly. Her response was, "If she can't spell Mary and write down a simple telephone number, she can't take an order correctly. I want employees to be able to do two things. They must be able to read and write and they must be able to speak English!" Unless you are wondering, the business owner was Hispanic, not that it really matters. If we are unable to spell, we are unable to write. If we are unable to write, we are unable to make use of a valuable form of communication. Writing is still a valuable form of communication in our world today whether it be on paper or by computer screen. I just finished my day with my students! I am still in teacher mode! --Mike

I wonder how much pc use really hinders our children. I notice
teachers have kids write rough drafts before typing the finished version on the computer. I think this is one way to make them pay attention to spelling more.
Some of my daughters teachers want written drafts not typed so they aren't using spell check. Maybe this should be standard in our schools.
Mike what kind of teacher are you? My mom was a English teacher for 40 yrs.

I am an English teacher. I don't let my students type their papers either. I want them to learn to write. It is amazing how many students today have terrible penmanship. It is almost impossible to read what they write. Many students can only print and they do that very poorly. I agree, spell check and grammar check are a real problem. More than that, online chatting is a problem because of the tendency to use slang and acronyms for various words and or phrases. Then you can forget about asking a student to punctuate, they don't know how! I think computers are wonderful. I think students need to know how to use them and I think we should let them take advantage of the technology that is available to our world today. To me, the problem lies in the fact that many students are proficient in computer technology and can correct their papers with spell check and grammar check, but they can't use a pencil, pen, and a piece of paper to communicate. I think it is still important to be able to write. Then again, I teach English everyday. I have the privilege to teach in an incredible school district here in West Texas. It is one of the wealthiest schools in our state. We have all kinds of technology available to our kids, however we are all rather disturbed over the fact that the kids can't communicate with pen and paper. --Mike

How about reading? My girls read a lot. More than we ever did as kids.
Books like the Harry Potter's series have been wonderful for todays youths.
You'd think reading a lot would help with spelling, but with my girls it hasn't.
My one daughter is still in HS and they still have spelling tests. I wonder if that is because spelling is so poor in kids today. Unfortunately I don't think spelling tests help much.

I became an English teacher so that I could teach Literature. Reading is very important, and if your kids read a lot, you are very lucky and your kids are in the minority among students today. Not only do students have trouble writing, they are not proficient readers. Most of today's students are reading way below their grade level. This bothers me. I expect my students to work at a higher level. It is my opinion that if they are challenged to work at a higher level, they will be able to handle grade level work with ease. I think writing and ultimately the mechanics of writing, which include spelling, have a direct reflection on a student's ablilty to read. I am sure, if your kids read a lot, they are probably better than the average students in their school. At least that is the way it seems to be when analyzing student data. I think the spelling problem is directly related to the over use of computers and chat rooms. Again, I think all that the computer offers a student is great, if used properly. I do think though, that the abilities of students has deteriorated due to the lack of standard grammatical English used or required on the internet. I am really bothered when a student turns in an essay that starts something like: "Yo g dog wuz hapnin nothin much here jus chillin in class gt rite a paper for english bout motavatshuns of some chick namd an frank her peeps where kilt by some bad gangstas their ain't no way to mak it shortr cause da techer whont let me" I need a degree in a new foreign language to be able to understand that nonsense! See, even I am guilty of using acronyms on here! (lol ). It is just frustrating to watch the kids try to write today. I think you should require your kids to write you grammatically correct letters at least once a week just to make sure they can write!--Mike
