When I use to post my music on Acid Planet, I noticed that most folks would get about a  4 to 1 or 3 to 1 ratio of listens vs. comments. At AP, you could score folks on their tunes which I really didn't care for. I mean original music for the most part is subjective and written first to please the composer than secondly the audience.
A lot of the listens were repeat customers, which is a good thing.
Myself, I would be more concerned about the quality both pro and con rather than the quantity of comments. Stroking the ego is nice but friends usually tell you what you want to hear rather than what you need to year. So sometimes lack of comment says more than the actual words themselves.

I should've qualified what I stated with "Pious inspirational"..Depending on how devout or pious a song is it may or may not be tolerable to many listeners in the Inspirational genre...  If you look at some of the songs a few do,  Jazzy, and Red (as well as a few others) will ocassionally do inspirational, and do quite well with it.. Especially during a time such as now... If it's dedicated to 9-11, I suppose people will listen assuming they know the person singing, ...  If a song is too pious however, it is a turn-off to some.  There are different levels of inspirational.. My assumption was based on the devoutly religious songs...Certain Anthems, and Inspirational songs ARE tolerable to many as well. I suppose if the singer has a listener base, and they throw a few inspirational songs in, they can pull it off assuming the song isn't deeply rooted in prayer, or church related material... I should've qualified what I stated with "devoutly religiously based inspirational prayer type songs"  That is tough for some to listen to... I was incorrect by assuming ALL inspirational is deeply pious.

Another way to get very few comments is to post semi- to obscure show tunes...I've heard some sensational singers who work this genre and many get next to nothing in the way of comments.  That category, "Jazz", "Inspirational" and "Classical" (the Kiss of Death!) are similarly kind of overlooked over more popular genres.

"Metal" seems fairly popular  when one appears but that is more likely because there are few doing that material on here.  Country usually gets a lot of hits and Top 40 always will.  Standards and oldies amazingly seem to do fairly well (seems like people who do the standards dabble in the oldies). "Originals" can slip through unnoticed or do well.  "Folk" rarely comes up but when it's done very well that gets a lot of responses.  Same for "foreign language" songs--it depends strongly on the performance rather than the basic material at hand.

In it's own microcosmic way, it's similar to running a radio station when you think about it---demographics, popular tastes, etc., all enter into the formula when you think about it!

I've always noticed people will listen, but not always comment.
If I take the time to listen I do comment because I appreciate when people do it for me. It is hard to come up
with new things to say. I don't think there is anything wrong with repeating yourself.
There are some people who are regulars on SS who repeat themselves a lot. It doesn't bother me at all.

I had dialup. It made navigating SS very hard. I upgraded to DSL.
It is cheaper now than dial up. I was paying about $20 for a seperate
phone line for my pc and about $15 for my server. Now I only pay $17.99
for DSL and illiminated the need for the second phone line. It is heaven!

DSL is so affordable now, if you have it available in your area.

I'm just happy if they listen.....no comment needed on my subs, but dropping a line is the only way I know who listened, and if you sub, I will listen to your songs. I treat SS like a night of karaoke. I have a karaoke machine connected to a cd recorder.....lol....though usually there is only me....it's live, and I rarely record twice. I get words wrong, timings off, but most people don't notice, or just are too nice to mention it. The vast majority of people on SS are singers, and they are very good at listening to others, but they do like to see some recipricle action. If you don't listen to very many subs, and leave comments......don't be surprised if you don't get many listens/comments......this is in general, and I'm definetly not talking about anyone in specific........I just imagine people taking their turns at the microphone, but when I'm up, I have to picture everyone nek-ked.....because I'm shy, and that's how my speech coach taught me to overcome this...lol

Ok, so correct me if I am wrong  ....you're saying, that no matter what song I sing, if I label it something other than inspirational, more people might listen as well as comment? Doesn't that kind of defeat my purpose for doing an inspirational song? :dontknow: - Tonya

Okay, I'll just speak my mind, not like I care what anyone thinks anyway.
If you're that concerned with listens and comments, doesn't that defeat your purpose for doing an inspirational song?
Tonya, what is more important, confirmation from people, or singing what's in your heart? If your songs come from your beliefs or faith, then sing away, forget what category it's in, how it's labeled, what other people think. Stand your ground. If other folks listen, then that's good, if they don't, does that diminish it's message?
Sing what you feel compelled to sing and forget what other folks think.

I think I have the solution to the riddle of so many views and fewer comments.  It's because lately people have been having problems getting the player to work.  One person commented to me that she tried 6 times to hear my junk before it finally went through--this, I believe verily, is the reason for the imbroglio over the comments on submissions.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  Plus, what IS the big concern over receiving comments???? :thinkin: Low self-esteem?  Need for an ego boost?  If your songs are being heard and you enjoy singing them then what's the problem?

My songs always have many more listens than comments. Sometimes, it makes ya think "dang, was it THAT bad?"........ But I've gotten used to that. For one, I do have friends and relatives who listen but are not members here, so they don't comment.  I think alot of people just hang out to listen. And I'm guilty too, I do that alot. I'll be here playing in forums, or on my comp doing other things, and I'll listen in to people, but not take time to comment cause I'm busy.

What stumps me...... is songs that were subbed quite a long time ago, that THOSE numbers continue to go up. I mean, the song is not anywhere near the front page of subs, so it makes you wonder who's out there pulling those songs up. Cause the old sub's # of listens change often too.

I agree with James, (maninblack) though, sing what YOU want to sing. Maybe some wont like that style, but you gotta be true to yourself. I sub alot (or used to, it's been a while) of bluegrass, which is not everyone's cup of tea.... but I still like to sing it, so I sub them.

Also, do make sure you comment to other people. I am bad sometimes about subbing a song, then getting busy a couple days and not coming back to reply or to listen to other people. I gotta get better about that, and only sub when I am sure I have time to listen down the page atleast. While it shouldn't be "expected", people do like to have you listen back to them as well.

well one possiblility.... is after you comment on a song, their profile opens up which gives you the opportunity to listen to any other songs they've posted in the past :D

just today, I got a comment from one person on my latest song, and then that person left a comment on an older song of mine (musta saw it in ma profile)

Well, I woud have to say, that when someone listens to your new sub, they think to themselves......I've gotta have some more of that......let's see what else she got............can't get enough of your subs.....I think that's a song they sing to themselves... :)

No, this wasn't directed towards anyone in particular I was just merely asking a question. Sorry. - Tonya

Thanks...you are right...forgive me Flesh got in the way there for a second. I have forgotten what I subbed just about a week ago....it's not about me, but it's all about HIM. Thanks for reminding me of why I sing and who I am really singing for. - Tonya

Ok this is not directed at you nor any other regulars that I listen to, but this maybe an explanation.... When I listen to a song that I honestly can't think of anything positive to say... I just don't say anything at all.  However my comment will now raise suspicions on people that I haven't commented on lol
