Listen to the NYC group "Rockapella" do Shambala (by three dog night), and get a load of the vocal percussion.



Also listen to the group "Bob's".  I can't imagine an all vocal arrangement of Helter Skelter, or Purple Haze is the easiest to write.

WOW....that was insane, I didn't think it could possibly be a human voice doing the percussion at first. I bet they would have a tough time pulling that off live...haha....

Yep,   What get's me is the sophistication of some of these arrangements.  I started my college glee club, directed it, wrote a few arrangements, and with the exception of the standard Barbershop stuff, like  "Nagasaki"  "Bring the Wagon Home John", "I had a dream dear".... A few of the easier arrangements were no piece of cake.... Like I'd mentioned, after the Yale Alleycat's performed their rendition of "Never my Love" by the association,  I realized I best not be writing arrangements either ..

Some of these writers have ALOT of talent !

To fill in on a few of these slow songs, they need to do alot of stunt-type vocal work...

I enjoy this stuff however...

When I grow up,  I'm going to sing like these guys

Nathan,  under the "New Stuff" section,  Rockapella does a rendition of "House of the Rising Sun", where the "Percussion vocalist" (as they call him) does quite a job of the percussion vocalwork on the song

Hey!  I remember that too!  I wondered why the name sounded familiar.

I remember an acapella group named The Bobs when my roommate was a DJ on college radio in the late 80's.  They were good.

Down in southern Illlinois where I used to live they had an annual apple festival and invited an acapella group from Chicago called ACROCK (which, they pointed out, could be either ac-rock or "a crock").  I liked them too, and they handed out free CDs at their performances.

They were singing outside the Tacoma Dome before a concert I went to there with my ex-wife.  Especially as cold as it was, I was REALLY impressed with their live delivery.  And in talking to them after their performance, I wasn't anywhere near surprised when they said one of their influences is my favorite group of all time (I still own more of their albums than any other artist)...The Nylons!

The Nylons put out the '87 covers of "Kiss Him Goodbye" and "Happy Together" that were all over the radio that summer.  When I figured out that the only instruments they used (at that time) were percussion, I was hooked!

Edit: Just realized the Coats are on the site linked in the OP in three places at least.  "The Trenchcoats" is the same group...they changed their name after Columbine, IIRC

Alanis Morrisette did an acappella version of You Oughta Know with an vocal ensemble backing group from the University of Pennslyvania. The male voices sound just like a an actual acoustic upright bass. It has a really COOL sound to the entire song. I dont know if it was ever released on a cd or not. But it may have been perfromed on an MTV Unplugged show. You can probably find it out on Napster or Sharebear.
