Feature article I wrote and photog'd for Seattle Karaoke Magazine I write and photo for. Story features interviews with Odie and LittleMizzAttitude(Charmin).
http://nwkaraokeguide.net/sept06/canby.php
Photos from left: Charmin's Krew. Odie stading in hawaiian shirt, Charmin(with rock shirt) seated in center. Denny's, KJ and Kitchen/wait staff.
Dennys will also be featured in an upcoming Karaoke Scene Magazine(and on-line) in the October issue with more photos of participants at the Clackamas County Fair karaoke contest finals sponsord by Canby Denny's. Be sure to order your copy!

Well, I do need to elaborate on something I said in the article, that's for sure. I was quoted as saying, "At first, I thought it (karaoke) was kind of a sideshow activity for amateurs to make fools of themselves." Up until I started going to Denny's in Canby for karaoke, I had only gone to karaoke maybe two other times in the '90s. I probably didn't get a good representative sample of karaoke back then. Those two early times I went, a lot of the singers were the jokester kind who seemed to get a kick out of singing bad. So I guess I formed an early bad opinion of karaoke. That attitude has since changed a lot. I didn't mean to sound snotty!! LOL

Not snotty at all--in fact its a VERY HONEST and ACCURATE COMMENT that I think alot of people had and I KNOW STILL HAVE particulary--in the musician community--as I get comments like that from them ALL THE TIME!! THEY SIMPLY DONT UNDERSTAND THE VALUE POTENTIAL AND OPPORTUNITY OF KARAOKE!!!!! :) But anyway I thought ODIE gave an EXCELLENT and COMPELLING INTERVIEW---if I didnt think that I WOULDNT have included him in the story!!

Thats too kool ! A karaoke newspaper, wish we had one around here. I loved your article, Bet Dennys does too, such good positive publicity. I wish I could afford to come for a visit. Sounds like a fun place to be.Also good idea to have breakfast & coffee right there to soak up some of the alcohol instead of driving right after. Thanks for sharing.

I'd like the rooty tooty fresh and fruity with an orange juice, a water and sign me up for "You Never Even Called Me by my Name".
There was a place in Austin (much like Denny's) that did karaoke for about two weeks called The Kettle. (Right off I-H35) I was at another karaoke place and some woman came in and was passing out flyers for karaoke at the Kettle. I went over there because they said they were doing it until 3:00AM.
They had the lights way down and were pretty much deader than a doorknob. I saw some people come in and then leave because they didn't know what was going on. (So much for getting more business!)
The only people singing were the two women that owned the business so I was very welcome. It was weird though.....very weird.
The owner probably had complaints from regulars at the Kettle and business must have fallen off because it lasted two weeks from when she handed out flyers.
I did eat some breakfast while I was there. I guess to help keep them there or something since it was obvious that they were actually driving off business. [schild=16 fontcolor=FF6347 shadowcolor=00BFFF shieldshadow=1]No pancakes and karaoke anymore?[/schild]

And all this time I thought my pal Odie was a pretty white cat! Nice article and PS: do they serve beer at that Denny's? Didn't know they did that--or is the picture with Odie from some other location?

They have a full-line bar/lounge at Canby. Its a separate room from the regular dining area, but all part of the same building. Its in the right hand secition of the building in the pic--just inside of the patio shown in the pic. They have the Kids karaoke on the patio outside. They have beer wine regular hard liquour---full-line full stocked bar.
Odie--in the same NW KARAOKE issue check out the other storys--and particularly the on I did on the Cascade BLues Association--you may know some the people I interviewed in that one.

Canby's Denny's is a fun, small town karaoke hang out! It has a lot of good singers, Charmin and Cat included of course. It's great for me because I don't have to drive 20 miles to Portland for some decent entertainment anymore! ha, ha One mile from home is just fine by me. LOL Thanks again Kurt for doing the two articles and all the pics. It'll bring some attention to our small town attraction! LOL

This is soooooooo AWESOME to see. Great article and GREAT idea. We once did out show in a HOOTERS ..... ..... but it was really a terrific match, believe it or not. But...... like everything else ..... the place left the Mall it was in .... and so went the gig.
I think the pics are great too!! Thanks for showing us this. This article, shown to other "chains" ..... might give some way to a "new wave" of thinking about Karaoke.
Three Cheers for DENNY'S!!!

This looks like an awesome family environment!
I sure hope Denny's spreads this concept around the rest of the country!

There's a fast food chain thats started doing karaoke on the 1st Tueday of each month called Burgerville--its a drive-thru burger joint---theres one in Canby doing it and one in Portland that I know of--there probably are others also.
