This isn't my opinion, and I've seen it written many times. If a person didn't care to use a dictionary, who are you to tell them they should have.....that's what you are doing......it's not like you're writing a term paper or thesis......you are intitled to your opinion, but I'm just telling you what I have read since this all began :)

I'm not forcing anyone (ne1) to do anything, I think typing real words show a little more intelligence than not.  And yes this is my opinion.  There are obvious differences between someone who does a typo & somone who mispells everything to not have to type out the entire word.

Sorry Johnny, but I don't know if you're MY elder or not so I'll just chime right in.  I was raised that one should always strive for improvement and in my book ignoring faux-pas that materially affect the meaning of the discussion is just wrong.  Meaning can be affected by mispellings that result in a word of a totally different meaning or poor grammar that ends up imparting a totally different concept.

In 1981 I was taught that anything coming off of a typewriter or computer should be done in such a manner that you wouldn't be embarrased by it being printed in the newspaper.  I was also taught that it was the responsibility of the reader to assist in the development of the individual making the error by alerting them to their mistake.

Am I perfect?  No.
Do I wish to strive for perfection? Yes. :oh yeah:

Well, I did say if the spelling completely threw you for a loop.....but once again, I didn't make this up. I've read it several times over many years. Well where do you draw the line......just like everybody else......where you feel comfortable with it. You can strive for perfection for yourself, but usually when people want someone's advice, they ask for it.....I guess pointing out the mistakes of others, takes the heat off ourselves.....so go ahead....check my spelling.....grade my post if you like.................and I just want you to know......don't take anything I say too seriously......the vast, and I mean vast, majority of the time.....I try to be funny............don't always work out that way though LOL

I'm terrible when it comes to chat - everything is typed out and I even correct my typos LOL. I have ADHD and if I have to take the time to try to decipher someones hieroglyphics I usually just breeze over it - I have no patience. I guess I type fast enough that I can use complete words and sentences even in chat, and fortunately those in the chatroom I hang out in are the same. I try not to condemn anyone who doesn't but I usually don't pay much attention to what they say either if its too much trouble to read. If its typed out, I can read it, if not its like trying to read cave drawings. Most I can get around, but I actually had someone on my Yahoo friends list that would have me so frustrated I about pulled my hair out. Not only were the words all misspelled, they were also in the wrong order...I couldn't sort it out for anything. Now she is on permanent stealth LOL.

Anyway just my  :2cents:

Sometimes we forget we currently live in an age where being at least proficient in any of the standard skills is lacking, to say the least.  This is not to say anyone is unintelligent but it is a sad commentary on the students passing through high schools and colleges who are unable to spell even rudimentary English or do basic math.  As mentioned by others, I too have a hard time deciphering words that are bolluxed up or figuring out homemade abbreviations that have no meaning to me...it's even worse when people speaking to me pour on the street slang and then any efforts at communication just creates more work for the listener, who may be trying to help the speaker in some way.

Being non-native, I find it strange that some prefer to write in an extremely informal way. But then this forum is a 'fun' forum and I can see why some do it. I am very sure  that those who use 'chat' language in a forum will revert back to normal English in their place of work. I still have a tendency to skip those post when I find it hard to read and understand.
Which remind me; I can never understand those SMSs my daughter sent me.  LMAO

That's kind of my point.  I KNOW some people that graduated high school that can't do simple arithmetic & can't spell certain words - they always had a computer spell checker & calculator to do their work!

I think the candy little boy/girl is hysterical.  We were at a BBQ on Monday and this little girl came and sat on my husbands lap and with all these people looking at him he said in his best dirty old man voice " Want some candy little girl"  Everyone just started rolling with laughter...  It was actually one of the funniest things I have seen in a while..

Back on topic.  I remember having to do all those spelling test in school.  Boy did I hate that....  I also remember the teacher telling me that if we couldn't spell it to look it up in the dictionary...If you can't spell it how are you going to find it in a dictionary???

It's no problem misunderstandings happen all the time, but what on earth makes you think I don't know "haunted house"?? I never could understand if the lyrics were about the butter melting in the pan or in the hand.

When I first started coming in this forum, I was doing the whole lower-case-no-punctuation thing. It is SO-O much easier, and that is how I communicate when I am instant messaging.

Then I started thinking about it (thanks in part to Kappy, who was on a grammar kick at the time) and realized that it wasn't projecting who I really am. So now I try to be a little more careful. Heck, I have even started using the doggone spellcheck feature! I still miss a lot of typos; my eyes are not particularly good any more, even with bifocals and my attention span when proofreading my own work is that of a slug.

I was taught that the best written communication should come across conversationally. I agree with that. But that does not necessarily give one license to abuse written grammar.

I suppose I have a point to this rambling: If "youre doin what I did and going casual cuz it is way easier and no big deal anyhow" or if you are too lazy to care about learning spelling and grammar in the first place, you are sending a message to everyone reading your posts. YOU decide what impression you would like to make.
