Now, I've got to tell you, even though it might not seem like it, but, I was surfing the net, while many of you were just pooping yellow.....I mean all the way back to when Al Gore invented it.... LMAO ....now I have seen in many references of internet ediquite, that when it comes to spelling....."never correct, or even mention someone's spelling......this is suppose to be as if we are face to face, and we are talking......no printed words to correct......now unless they spell so bad that you haven't the slightest idea, what the heck they are talking about.....you shouldn't mention it.......

What if I... in person... correct people's grammar???? I am always polite about it, I would want people to do the same for me, if no one ever tells you, you never know that you're saying... or spelling something incorrectly.

I don't agree, unless it's an obvious kind of an error, but if someone is doing bad spelling on purpose or web chatroom shortcuts, doesn't make them look very intelligent & i'm sorry, that's the way I feel.   :(   Too many illiterates in the world as it is.

I understand where Johnny is coming from but I tend to side with Lonman.  My basis for this is; once in a blue moon posting to this site or that site, I would agree with Johnny.  But when becoming part of a "community" such as we have here, those who tend to keep the "community" running should have a right to dictate (to an extent) the excepted behavior within that  forum.

My two cents.

Kelly

I try to type the way I would talk but sometimes I forget a letter here and there...Common typos, I guess.

It does drive me crazy when people do not speak correctly...I'll give you an example...My ex-husband will say "I am goning to the bank and they are going to borrow me some money"  Or "I borrowed some money to a friend a of mine"  DRIVES ME NUTS!!!!

I don't particularly like it when people use so many abbreviations that you can't understand what they are saying...I also don't like it when people use profanity so much..I think that excessive use of profanity just shows how unintelligent a person is...

Can I get an exception?

Or do I mean an expectation?

yep I agree with virtually everything ya say...cept the profanity part. I know my IQ is up there, but I find I would be lost without the odd four letter word, and probably the even four letter words as well.

I admit I swear a lot, blame it on the years I spent in racing stables riding horses. I would the really naughty ones I was breaking-in all the worst words under the sun, but in the nicest tone of voice.
End result I got rid of some frustration and the horse thought it was getting praised.
My vet told me he had never heard f**k said in such a posh accent  LMAO

Ok I really gotta go now cos I havent seen my mum in 2 weeks and I feel really guilty so off I go to suffer the 6 poodles and her cooking. Take care folks

Don't get me wrong I can do my fair share of swearing, But there are people that use 2 or 3 of them per sentence. and I don't see where it adds any value to the conversation....  That's what drives me nuts..  Heck we all have the swearies from time to time....LOL  I know it would be hard to tell some one to f@$% off with out using that particular word...LOL

This isn't my opinion, and I've seen it written many times. If a person didn't care to use a dictionary, who are you to tell them they should have.....that's what you are doing......it's not like you're writing a term paper or thesis......you are intitled to your opinion, but I'm just telling you what I have read since this all began :)

Well, #1...... I don't swear, ever. (honest)  :D

#2..... I am TERRIBLE at correcting peoples' spelling, and grammer. (in real life, and I joke about it alot in private chat...) Drives my husband nuts. He is forever saying "who gives a sh1t, you understood what I was saying"...  :D

But, in a place such as this, I try to ignore it. Main reason, you don't KNOW the person behind the keyboard. Maybe they CAN'T spell..... good lord, if my hubby got on here you all would have a freakin' hayday, he's awful.  But.... if you see my point, maybe they really can't spell, and the chatroom lingo they picked up makes it easier for them to do than misspelling alot of words.  Now, if you see them type correctly, then other times not, that'd be a different story. (they'd most likely be drinkin' that day, hahaha)

My opinion anyhow. If I can understand it, I wouldn't mention it at all. And believe me, even though I make plenty of my own (I'm a great speller, TERRIBLE typist)..... I never fail to notice someone else's mistakes. I wouldn't chance hurting feelings or being rude just for the fact that they are not as good at spelling. (or grammer....)

.

Most of the time it's a typing error and not a spelling error.   I type with tow fingers and sometimes I type dislexicly.   I'm thinking 100 times faster than my two fingers and I get way ahead of myself.  To the point where I think I already typed the letters in the word when actually I haven't. LMAO

Sorry Johnny, but I don't know if you're MY elder or not so I'll just chime right in.  I was raised that one should always strive for improvement and in my book ignoring faux-pas that materially affect the meaning of the discussion is just wrong.  Meaning can be affected by mispellings that result in a word of a totally different meaning or poor grammar that ends up imparting a totally different concept.

In 1981 I was taught that anything coming off of a typewriter or computer should be done in such a manner that you wouldn't be embarrased by it being printed in the newspaper.  I was also taught that it was the responsibility of the reader to assist in the development of the individual making the error by alerting them to their mistake.

Am I perfect?  No.
Do I wish to strive for perfection? Yes. :oh yeah:
