Apparently a stingray slammed into his chest causing heart failure. You know, when you monkey around with prehistoric animals like crocodiles and komodo dragons, sooner or later...

He was a trip to watch, but I always wondered when it would happen.....The guy was one of those adrenaline junkies....His wife is HOT!, and she was a perfect match for him.
I wonder how many watched his daring feats fooling with crocs, poisonus snakes and spiders and attempted same?

I have a great respect for this man; he took a lots of risk, some unnecessary. Ya he can handed snakes and is one of the best snake handlers around. But in water (sea) ; he is not the expert he think he is.
His contribution to the environment course in terms of exposing the general public to the ecological issues is immeasurable. In my opinion he is the leader as a TV environmental preacher. His contribution will be remembered.
Hat off to this man.

Well, I gotta admit the guy had a very unique persona...He was a 44 year old BOY who had the ability to remain an excited boy in his shows. I loved the way he revealed his excited boyish side when he got up close and personal with insects and critters....It made Nature more exciting and fascinating to most viewers...his wife is so much like him in that reqard!

It was only a matter of time until this type of demise caught up to him. I must agree with Morgan on this one. The man was a fool in the chances he took and the corresponding example he set for the young minds that were his primary audience. No child should be given an example as reckless as he portrayed.

Steve Irwin was always much more popular in the States than downunder.
Might be why he married an American girl.
Well known that the folks in his own hemisphere often thought him campy and "a bit over the top," while most Americans adored him.
I am one of the Americans that absolutely adored him.
He will be sadly missed in the Northern hemishere...

I, too, will miss him. His enthusiasm for life and for his work were refreshing. I can, though, understand that he could be a bit tiring to some people.
His reckless behavior was accompanied by a staff of trained professionals, I imagine. And he always acknowledged the danger of his actions. I think he set a good example for today's youth. Not like the fine examples set by gangsta rappers and such.

Yes, he set a much better example for me too.
I will never forget his visit to the San Diego area about 5 years ago. During his 10 day stay here I learned more about local wildlife than I'd learned from living here all my life. Coyotes, Cougars, skunks, lizards, many types of snakes, and multiple spider species were located by Steve and Terri while they were here.
One story featured Irwin pulling off the side of interstate highway 8 (about 10 miles from where I live). It was the first man-made cut in the highway where underlying rock structure was exposed. He then pulled one huge diamond-back rattlesnake after another out of the rock crevices in the highway cut. Yikes!
I never knew they were there until Steve showed 'em to me.
He was one of a kind. His work to raise our awareness of the creatures that share our environment will never be forgotten.

That is his biggest attraction, the ability to transform a boring subject into an exciting one. believe me the life of wildlife biologist is not anything near to what the average viewer see on TV. Its the most boring job in the world, and very dangerous too.
This guy may seem to be fooling around with wild animals but he DOES know the limit of his skill. He knows the animals he handles. His death was a freak accident; a direct hit on the chest.
ps; I lot of the scenes in his show are staged; but most of the other similar show do the same tricks too. the worst; Nat Geo

I don't know what to think, or what to say. I used to joke about this type of thing happening, but never wanted it to. Yet quite honestly, the child part of me almost believed this "dare-devil' had an amazing crew behind him and was invincible. Would never succumb to a tiger snake, mamba, fierce snake, crocodile, etc. I was bothered when he brought his child too close to a crocodile pit once, because I felt he put a child at unnecessary risk, and I assumed some of his stunts with the australian 10 most venemous species of hot snake were WELL planned, but I had always wondered if Steve Irwin was basically "legalized suicide" in the making, not unlike all other dare-devils.. You mess with the deadliest animal species in the world, either something is "fixed" or you are essentially just a dare-devil putting your life at risk everyday.
I liked the guy, but I don't know why. I don't know if he really loved these species of animals, or was just another thrill-seeker needing fame and recognition. Whether he truly knew, or believed he would die this way, he must've. Whether he wanted to die this way ? perhaps. I just don't know what to think. He was a dare-devil, and took a risk, I wonder how long he's been on borrowed time ?
When I first saw this post I assumed it was a joke, because there have been alot of characatures done, and paradies done on Steve Irwin. You wonder how he stays alive, but for some reason when he dies part of me just doesn't fully understand that what he did wasn't fixed, it was real... Yet ANY diver, or people filming the national geographic specials risk their lives all the time, filming alone is dangerous, Jaques Cousteau lost some of his crew too as I recall. Steve Irwin handled dynamite for a long time... It should be no surprise there was an explosion finally. I never understood the skits out in the rural areas of Australia, face to face with a tiger snake, enough neuro-toxin to kill 100 horses in 10 minutes, yet 45 minutes from the hearest medical facility. What was with that stuff ?
Incidentally, you corner certain species of Stingray, you are dead. A few species are potentially fatal do sting, and do damage. Some DO sting, and are deadly. Not unlike Lion and Stonefish

I am shocked! What a odd thing to happen.
I just was snuba diving with sting rays last month on vacation.
They are like big puppies. We saw some that were 5 foot across.
We pet them, swam with them.
This was a fluke accident for sure. Guarrented the ones we swam with are used
to being around people. Maybe that's the difference.

Yet like most species they'd rather flee, than confront man. Steve Irwin likely cornered the species, which is stupid.. Or it felt cornered. These are unintelligent prehistoric species, they aren't tame.. Quote: Guarrented the ones we swam with are used to being around people. Maybe that's the difference. I doubt it. I suppose Steven Irwin was just another dare-devil defying death much of the time. Look at the guy who was attacked by one of his tigers... (I'm having a senior moment, how did I forget his name)... The famous guy, part of the team or couple... (Roy from Siegfied and roy) You deal with the bull, you eventually get the horns. In fact, this is literally what happend from the looks of things. He was on top of the Ray, in it's escape path, and the barb went thru his chest.. Quote: "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart,"
