you pay royalties everytime you buy a karaoke cd as to performance rights, the venue is responsible for those fees.  You would only be responsable if you are the one who was hosting the party as if you were the bar owner himself or the person putting together the party.

actually, you don't pay any royalties when you buy a karaoke cdg.

Those royalties are paid by the karaoke manufacturing companies. They pay a license fee for the songwriters, sync license, etc. These licenses are for a set amount of cdgs that go into print. ONE time. If they put the song on another cdg, or reprint the first, it costs them the licensing AGAIN.

NO cdg that you buy puts money into the hands of the people that hold those copyrights.

Er.........don't you kinda figure the CDG manufacturer recovers those fees when he sells the discs to his distributors?

Does that mean, If some group (business party) rent me as a KJ in one party and if I play the cdg songs (and get paid for providing the videoke) I don't have to pay any royalty?

Royalty fees must be paid for each and every song you play. I will be more than glad to handle this transaction for you. Next gig, send me a copy of every song slip along with one dollar per slip. I will in turn send you a letter of verification which you can present to any person or representative of the recording industry as proof of royalties paid.
All you will need to do is present this along with a current library card and everything will be just fine. Glad I could be of service. Looking forward to your first payment.

You really are better off directing your questions to the licensing agencies asociated with the profession....Asking legal questions of folks on public forums will get you only their impression/version of the law.

Go here to start:

http://www.ascap.com/licensing/generallicensing.html

Then look up the exact license you will need based on your venue here:

http://www.ascap.com/licensing/types.html

Now, like all laws, you can decide which to follow and which ones to ignore....If you speed often and get away with it, then you might be a little surprized and pizzed when you finally get a speeding ticket...same goes for ASCAP and RIAA...The laws are there, and it's always a risk to ignore them.

ASCAP & BMI are preforming rights group that collect fees from the bar owners.    They are the music police, if you will.      They collect fees from the use of the jukebox, Bands, Djs, & KJs.    Based on occupancy of the bar.

These monies go to the publishers and song writers.   Radio & TV pay these fees too.

Dics Companies pay to use the songs.   They buy the rights to use them for so many copies.

If you were one of the above you would pay.

However, technically you have no right to play the music for profit, without permission from the publishers.    If you played in your backyard and charged people to sing, you would have to pay the piper.

This information will be $50.   Please forward it to me ...NOW.
