Hey topher, there is another sale for Chartbuster country.  chartbuster country is good, right?  They are 3 for 10 bucks.  Maybe I will buy some.  Someone have a look at them who knows what they are doing (not me!) and see if they are good titles at first glance.  thnks!  jim

Yeah, those Chartbuster country discs are good stuff. Just note that those are 6 + 6 multiplex discs. There are only 6 songs per disc, with each song having a karaoke version and a version with the vocals included.

I would say if there are any artists that you are weak on in your collection, then go ahead and grab some of these Charbuster country 6 + 6 artist discs for those particular artists to fill out your lists for those popular artists, but you probably want to stay away from the ones that are on sale here that are assortments, as I've seen better deals...

The way I read the add, If you buy 3+ then they are $10.00 each. To Me $10.00 for 6 songs is high. I would stick to the chartbuster artist series, or the Pro series. Better value for the Dollar

Go out to other people's karoke shows and see what they are using on a nightly basis---that will show you the type of gear you really need.

You could always do something like the Sound Choice Mortar as well.  It's a pack set of 12 Spotlight discs, you pick which ones, cost $200.  It breaks each disc down to $16.66 each.  Each disc has 15 songs - about $1.11 per song, plus you know you are generally getting the best quality.

If there were a couple of artists that I was really lacking that needed to be filled, $10 for 6 songs isn't outrageous.  I wouldn't buy them unless needed though.

Well I got all my stuff together finally tonite for a test drive.  It sounds really good, and I think anything more than what I have for a small bar would be overkill.  It sounds good and it is loud.  But, I don't have a clue professionally so take all this with a grain of salt of course!  My sound card isn't working right, so I need to work on that.  I just wanted to get it up and see if I would be crying or not for spending much more than I wanted to.  No tears here.  A thank you and a couple of questions right off the bat......

-my computer plugs into the mixing board at the CD/Tape player connection, that means I can't use one of the 12 channels on the mixing board to control the compu input (since the jacks look like home-sound-system type jacks).  the behringer set-up diagram says this is where it goes, but I'm wondering: would it be a better idea to get a 1/4 shielded plug or XLR connection (if they make them) and use one of the 12 channels to run the sound comming from my computer, or should the karaoke software/ soundcard (not working right yet) take care of this when I get it?

- I'd like to buy really good cables eventually.  I have some Horizon speaker cables that were 70 bucks for the pair (speakon connections, 14 gauge, 6 feeet).  I thought that was high but they are supposed to be really good.  Is this price what I can expect for good cables?  Is there a good place to buy this type of stuff?

Thanks to everyone and especially lonman for helping me with a purchase I am very happy about (right now anyway!).  thanks lon.

Use the stereo channel or even 2 mono channels; they are better than the tape in. You have more controls over the music; ie you can eq. You will need the correct cable with the right end.

There's ALWAYS room to upgrade.  Remember don't consider small rooms as the only ones you plan to do, plan for the future & bigger rooms as your budget allows.  Like I said, this system you will at least be able to upgrade on.

You want to plug into the stereo channels of the mixer, not the cd/tape input.  Doing the stereo 1/4" channels, you get more control over the sound of your music - eq control mainly.  You need a 1/8" stereo mini plug (for the back of the sound card) to 2 1/4" plugs for the mixer.  I attached a pic of what it looks like.

Hooking it up through the tape/cd input is not the way to go.

Speaker cables aren't cheap - especially for Speakon connections.  That $70 bucks - IS a little high for 2 6' cords.  $60 should get you 2 10' cords.  $100 will get you 2 25' cords.

I like the way you think. Hi, I'm new to this and just started workin at a bar with its own equipment. I'm really looking to make my own business by next summer. My plan is to get the scratch togther to get my own system, go to a few places in my city, and set up regular gigs. I've started compiling music, and I'm lookin at equipment and comparing prices. Any advice for a guy not interested in punching a clock and more interested in having a good time for a living?
Thanks for your time, JM

Yeah, don't undercharge yourself if possible!  Just because it may be a fun job, doesn't make it a low paying job - it's still work!

Oh Johnny, Johnny, Johnny......

Good thing you found this site, but bad thing you didn't at least read this thread before you posted to it!!

That system that you linked to is VERY second-rate and worth about 1/3 of what they are charging for it. For the $1400 you were going to spend on that, we can put you a system together that is 5 times better!!

I would suggest you start your own thread so it doesn't get lost in this one. When you start your own thread, make sure to list EXACTLY what you will be using the system for and what your total budget for the system is, EXCLUDING the music.

I could hook you up with a good club-ready system with amp, mixer, speakers, CDG player and sonic maximizer for around $1250. Just remember that you will also need things like a TV, TV cart, speaker stands, cables, and mics, and may optionally also need things like a rack casing, CDG storage, etc..

Also remember, though, that if you get a steady gig you could have all your equipment paid off in about 10-15 shows, so it is a no-brainer of an investment if you have the gig lined up!!

Start your own thread and BE SPECIFIC about your needs and budget and we'll hook you up!!

Well replace the players & the mixer & get a better amp & speakers & you're well on your way!
Honestly, that 'karaoke' mixer is crap.  The players haven't been proven to be reliable.  The amp is the best quality component in that rig but is pretty low powered for any serious work, same goes with the speakers.

musician's friend is sending me cables for free since they said cables were supposed to come with the setup, and they didn't. they are not HOSA, they are 14 gauge CONQUEST, so now I have 6 footers and 25 footers, not sure how good conquest is.  I guess using the 6 footers is best when I can?  (less impedence/interference?). plus maybe they are better (is HORIZEN a good name?)

Would not worry too much about the cables.  It isn't going to make much difference in those short runs upgrading to higher quality cables.  If you were pushing higher power through them &/or distances over 50 feet then you'd want to go to a 12 or 10 guage.  Conquest, Horizon, ProCo - all similar in quality.

well, i finally got my sound card to work and I can tell the difference right away.  all the crappy hiss is gone.  the sound seems to be more full, crisper, although the most marked thing is that the hiss is all gone!   the sonic maximizer is a biggee as well, when I turn it off the sound droops quite a bit.  next I will buy the lon-man cord to hook into one of the stereo channels on the mixer.  man this system rocks!  too bad it is the time of the year when I have to go to work.  while I am gone I am going to visit some kjs and maybe try to do some gigs when i get back, maybe by early decemeber.  I will let you guys know where i am going when i find out and maybe I can visit one of your shows!  won't be going to malaysia though, sorry to say, Jian.

Make sure you don't overdo on the Maximizer.  It's not just a bass & treble control & if you give it too much can cause harm.  There should be a noticeable difference, not a drastic one.

ok, when you say overdo, do you mean not too far from 180 dgrees? (dial pointing up).  i bought it used with no instruction manual.  i like it, but I don't keep the dials far from pointed straight up usually. I just use it to give the music a little edge in the right direction, like if it is too tinty, I am starting to know where the dials need to sit, but not sure what they really mean.
