It's just right around the corner, and I know many of you will be playing gigs.
What I thought about doing was combining the two in an unusual way.
I know that when most folks think of Halloween music, they think of tunes like,
The Monster Mash
One Eyed Purple People Eater

but what I had in mind was to take songs that are in my Karaoke collection and use the ones that have been featured in recent films.
Examples:
Devils Rejects-
Allman Bros./ Midnight Rider
Lynyrd Skynyrd/FreeBird

Feed-
Association/Cherish

Rocky Horror-
Time Warp

An American Werewolf in London-
CCR/Bad Moon Rising
Van Morrison/Moondance

you get the basic idea. Of course you may have to stretch things a bit to come up with enough tunes, say maybe toss in a couple of others like:
Black Magic Woman
Riders on the Storm
Ghostbusters
Maybe a Black Sabbath tune if you have it.
doesn't really matter as long as it's kinda in the general theme of the Halloween spirit.
yeah I know it may sound a bit silly, but it's just an idea, and of course if you have other songs that may fit the bill, I'd love to hear about them.

While I love horror movies, I can't think of any popular songs with this very current crop of movies (I wouldn't recognize the titles of most rock songs to be honest) but there is always selections from the movie-musical version of "Little Shop of Horrors"--particularly the title song, which is quite catchy.  

"Blue Moon" was also used throughout "An American Werewolf in London"

I also have a recording of the theme song from the 1959 Steve McQueen opus, "The Blob" (written by Burt Bacharach (!) and featuring Glen Campbell on the guitar (!) if you'd like me to send this to you--it's pretty cool in it's way.

Cool deal Michael, actually I think I have the Blob tune you're talking about, a buddy of mine who's a huge Dr.Demento fan sent it to me along with a bunch of there horror related tunes. For the most part it's silly stuff, like the surf music the kids were listening to in movies like 'Invasion of the Saucer Men' crazy off the wall stuff like that. I have numerous cd and albums of horror themes and soundtracks, with everything from Christopher Lee narrating Dracula to the Goblin collection, and the Hellraiser series.

I hear what you're saying about not knowing who the artist might be especially since a lot of the music used is what they call 'incidental music' like when the kids who are on their way to Camp Crystal Lake are driving down the road listening to the radio, well that tune would be called incidental music. A lot of music like that doesn't make a sountrack, but it still sticks in your head. And a lot of the time movies will put out a music score cd which is the orchestrated music written by the composer. I just thought it would be a different way for us to approach Karaoke on Halloween. Like I said, it may be hard for folks to even find enough tunes to even make it worth while.

I know what you mean there...hearing these "incidental" music cues (of actual songs) can evoke memories, even if one does not remember the incidentals.  And now that I think about it, there WAS a song that was played in "Halloween"--I believe in the prolog that stood out but I can't remember the song. I'll check up on that for you!

The Goblin music from the Argento movies is enough to give anybody the heebie-jeebies.  I take it this is a younger crowd you are playing to, so I'll leave it up to your colleagues to come up with titles for you (I'm not very old but I never got into contemporary music for some reason), but will check into that Halloween opening for you.  I sometimes forget that as a teen I used to assist a disc jockey at dance hops and things like you karaoke folks do today--man was I good at cueing up those records!

PS:  You have not LIVED until you've heard the rock 'n' roll classic, "The Zombie Stomp" as performed by the Del-Tones in "The Horror of Party Beach" (1964).  If you ever have 15 minutes to live, watch that number and you will feel you have lived through another 36 years, at least.

For a newer Halloween song, I like the theme from House of a thousand corpses...........Rob Zombie.......I haven't seen his Devil's rejects.....any good?

With a movie like Devils Rejects, praise and repulsion walk hand in hand, each with a distrust for the other, but knowing the necessity of the others existence. While I can't in good faith ask anyone to run out and rent this title for fear that those of a squeamish nature would have to seek therapy immediately upon it's conclusion. I on the other hand have watched it numerous times if only for an exercise(exorcise) in brutality. It's a film that offers a punch to the gut and a kick to the nuts at the same time, never letting the viewer come up for air for too long a period of time.
It's Rob Zombie at his most vicious, relentless and without apology.
In short, yeah it's cool.

Speaking of Goblin, in the new issue of Rue Morgue there is an article about Simonetti's new band Deamonia. It's a stripped down rock/industrial version of Goblin. The still do hightlight tunes from Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead, but only with a heavier sound. In the article, they also mention that the band does a couple of cover tunes, one of which is the Halloween theme of which we speak, and Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. Think I'm gonna have to hunt this one down and give it a listen. I have most of Simonetti's previous works.

Speaking of the Halloween theme, anyone around when I get a call on my cell gets to hear it in all it's gory glory. But what would you expect from a guy who has Pinhead as his computer background with the Lament Configuration box as his screensaver.

Being married for 32 years, I have plenty of padding around my gut, and my balls are long gone.......so this movie can not hurt me......I will definetly rent this movie before Halloween.......thank you, James............... .......jj

Halloween is when you need all the props hats beards funny glasses etc. My best one was when I took some pink paper and cut to fit inside glasses and had small holes to see out of. I had an ugly stocking hat and a beard I popped up from behind the tv and and sang Im just a gigilo.... I guess Im gonna have to come out and show you guys how to do halloween karaoke.. Well no maybe the best was when I did satin sheets in a womans nighty and a mop on my head and cowboy boots... Its halloween.... get out of
the rut......
