I'm talking about the bar owner that came looking for me, a more professional KJ than the one he currently has.     The one speaker girl's father has cancer.   The bar owner doesn't want to fire her completely.     He came looking for a new KJ, because she is costing him money and she just plain sucks, after he heard me.

He has a heart of gold,   :worship:  because he feels bad for her and her father.    But she is losing money for the bar.    He hired my newbies to come in every other week.  Telling them that they would be every week, after he gave the girl two weeks notice.   Appearently he has changed his mind about giving her notice.    The crowds are much bigger on their weeks.

He has a brain of lead, because he is willing to lose money on the bad KJs night, just because he feels bad.    The difference is about $200 a night.  $400 amonth.   About $5000 for the year.

She can't keep a job, because she sucks and has crappy equipment.   He feels sorry for her because she sucks.   If she was better she could keep a job.   So why should he feel bad for her because she refuses to upgrade her system?   Why would he cost himself $5000 to keep her?     Doesn't make good business sense to me.

I think I'll throw away half my system and claim some tragedy.

I know some of you will think I'm sounding a little insensative here.  This has nothing to do with her father.    I wish him well.    But her choice to have a crappy system is why she can't keep jobs.   It's not the bar owners fault, nor his responsibility.

Here's a riddle.      Why did the girl only use one speaker?

So her crappy system would only sound half as bad. LMAO

Dahlin you could suggest an answer to the bar owner if you were so inclined. Suggest that he invest the $5000 he is gonna blow anyway on a good sound system that he owns, stays in the bar and she can use...prob solved  LMAO

I don't feel bad for that KJ at all.  She is there to provide a service.  She is not providing a good service.  The owners is there to make money, he is not making money.

My bar????  She would be out of there so fast her one speaker would be spinning.

Why don't you offer to hire her on to your company, maybe not officially, but at least help cushin the blow for everyone.

Tell the bar owner you have a solution that works for everyone. First, he needs to level with her and lets her know that she is losing him money but he wants to help her out and do her the favor of keeping her on BUT she is now going to be working FOR YOU. You then absorb her under your umbrella, let her use your equipment and give her a crash course on how to be a better KJ, then you take your standard % off the top that you would take from your newbies. She will be making less $$ but will be making $$$ none-the-less and doesn't have to be fired, she will provide a better product that will be less of a loss for the bar and may actually turn around to a gain, and you'll be able to add some more income to your bottom line with these new days every other week. Everyone wins!!

Everything in life is not about making money.  If it were we'd all me on Wall St or on the top floor of an office building.  This owner may know what he is doing and is being charitable in his own way.

I'm an A-hole, as you very well know......But I never forget that my friends forgive me for that.

He is her friend......So expect him to forgive things about her.

Don't covet her gig, covet instead her lack of two speakers....For what she lacks makes her Human.....And Humans tend to make the best friends.

Be Human, and be generous toward others......Because as a Human, you lack a few things yourself.

What makes us essential, is what we can do for another....What makes us attractive is what we need from another.

What I would do is what Topher suggested.

Hire her yourself... teach her how to be a better KJ. Teach her about better sound.

Talk with the bartender about what you can do to help her... as you care about the bar's success, and they obviously want to keep her involved in the general aspects.

I think the title should be "Heart of Lead KJ..."

I can see both sides here. I feel for her and her situation and think it is commendable the bar owner shows compassion. I would love to work for
this bar owner.

It would be a wonderful thing if you could hire her on explaining the bar owner
likes the more updated equipment. I wouldn't tell her she is being let go because her equipment is crap. Instead of telling her that her way of doing things is wrong, you could tell her that you would like to retrain her to run a show in the manner your company is known for. I don't think it is your responsibility to take this on, but it may show the bar owner you're as compassionate as him - which I do not think is a bad thing. If you think she is so bad she is beyond help I wouldn't bother, it is your business and reputation.

Unfortunately she is being let go regardless, so it is understandable you would take the gig. You can be a successful business owner and a good person. It isn't one or the other.  :D

Ahhhh the inhumanity of it all.  Business or heart which goes first.  Sounds like the bar owner knows the situation he's in and that's why he's splitting the difference and cutting his losses while still showing compassion.  In my experience, he will only let the situation linger on for a while, maybe a few more months.

Hang in there Bigdog 'cause it sounds like you'll end up with the whole bone rather than just the kibble.

Wow, I just read my post above from earlier...Boy did that come out sounding bad...I would edit it and take it out but I'm not.  I must have been having a "moment"  or a hot flash or something. LOL

If there is a way to work it out so that everyone wins that would be the best.  I do like the suggestion that topher gave....

First of all, I would never hire her, because she is my competition.  Business is business.   If she wants to do business like she's doing it now, that's not my fault.   If I would train her to be better, then she will be after my jobs at some point in time.

I can offer advice to anyone on here.     I don't see anyone that is a direct threat to my business.    But I can't just start helping every local Tom, Dick and Harry.   I have several people now, that I trained, that worked for me, that are now my direct competition.    That sucks worse than anything.   If she couldn't afford to get into business with the proper amount of financing, Oh well.    She may have chosen to do it like she is, Oh well.     She may fall flat on her face, Oh well.    If you can't run with the Bigdogs, stay behind with the porch puppies.

I made a substantial investment in my business.   I choose to help myself be very successful.   Those that can't are not my concern.     I takes money to make money.

I have an artistic background.    I can do all of the necessary posters and ads etc.
I have been in business before.  That I started from scratch.    Made the proper starting investments.
I have been to many business seminars.
I have talked to many successful businessmen and women.
I have been involved in sales and marketing.
I read psychology books.
I have an ear for music.
I read about the impact of color and body language.
I played in bands before.
I choose to be successful with my karaoke business.   By doing everything as it should be done, from the beginning.
I did a lot of homework before jumping into it, without the proper knowledge and investment.
Bigdog paid his dues.   Over and over.    I'm still paying dues.   I'm still learning.    Some people choose not to learn.     We see it everyday with the undercutters that are ruining it for all.

Not being cruel, just doing business.      Lowes doesn't share with Walmart and Home Depot.    There isn't a department store or home improvement web site like this one.

I helped the people that bought a system from me.   They paid me to help them.   I still help them.  I have given them gigs and obtained jobs for them.   I have helped them with every aspect of running a successful karaoke business.     Showed them all of the dos and don'ts.    Created their business cards, calenders, posters, book covers and logo.   Wrote their song books.    Do a lot of their artwork.     Yes, they are my competition.   In two months from the day they started looking for work, they work 5 nights a week, same as me.

If someone would like to pay me to train them to do it all, I'm available.

You won't be an undercutter, when I'm done with you.    You'll be able to get high end money.     If you have the investment.

My newbie puppies grow into Bigdogs.     :hi5:  :dancin:  :oh yeah:  :worship:  :handshake:        :D

It's all about the money Bigdog?

How about another kind of investment?

Just a thought.

I'm with big dog on this one.

He is in business and so is she.  The only way I'd hire someone to train and learn how to do what I do is to have them sign a contract with a 5 year non-competition clause.  I COOPERATE with other KJs in the area, but I'm not going to give away the store!

So this woman has difficulty in her life right now.  Who doesn't?

Why should he feel obligated to help her out?  It's like I always tell people when they complain about their job--careers are not assigned.  Go do something else!  Let her go get a day job.  Maybe she just isn't cut out to be a KJ or isn't willing to make the commitments, both personal and financial, to be one.

If the bar owner wants to keep her on as a charity case, good on him, but expecting big dog to prop up his competition and make it better is ridiculous!

For some reason I cant associate this scenario with any of my experiences. Usually when I go into  a bar with a setup like that she knows, the bar owner and all the singers know that I have a system that blows hers away and three times the selection. And everybody knows that the bar owner doesnt or cant afford to pay what I get and I probably wouldnt want to do it there anyway.  I dont do it anymore but the singers used to be happy because I would be packing the latest cd's and I would energize the show..

If she asked my advice about improvement I would give it. If somebody called and was desperate for somebody to do a birthday party I would explain the situation to them and refer them to her. I have been doing computer karaoke about 5 or 6 years and several have wanted my knowledge but didnt want to pay for it. So they struggled to get it setup .There is a difference between public relations and business.

I think that there's a way to help, if so inclined and make money from doing it.

The problem is that it would still be helping your competition.

I hear ya karyoker.  I have had several in my area see my Hoster set up and want to get it but then want to know if I'll set it up for them.  NO.  One, my time is worth a lot to me.  And I don't want to (as Bigdog pointed out) get that involved helping out my competition.  In addition, there's too many wanna be kj's that aren't comfortable enough knowing how to set up good sound, let alone interfacing computers.
