Does such a program exist ?   If I have songs on my harddrive (for home singing use) is there software I can run these thru that will enable me to alter the pitch of the songs somewhat easily so I can work on my singing ?

Check out PowerKaraoke.com,  I use their Power CD+G program and it does backups flawlessly. They have several other programs one of which does exactly what you are looking for. I'm sure that there are others out there, but this is the only one I have personal experience with.

depending on what playing source you're using on your "hard drive", there are several options to change pitch.

I use pacemaker thru winamp.

One that is easy to start off with that I recomend for home use is Karafun.

Most KJs that I know who have gone digital seem to prefer Winamp.

Steven, are your mics connected to an outboard mixer, then to your computer?

Keith, this would just be to change pitch when the song is played on the computer so I can sing to it,  nothing regarding a microphone, just for computer playback.  I have nothing going into the computer except a cheap computer microphone that I bought for Dragon softwware and Paltalk etc years ago.  This isn't for recording, not interested in doing that yet.  Just want to learn to sing first.  I've never done anything with digital yet regarding recording.  Still analog. I have my microphones hooked to a non-powered mixer that I run into a power mixer into two PA speakers..  Another few microphones hooked to a Tascam 424 MK series analog mixer... Those are in a different room.  Only time I record is if a few musicians are over, and that's few and far between this past year. I've had too many other expenses to even get that M-audio hammer action piano I wanted to purchase, let alone the delta soundcard.  Just too much going on.  I just want to DL software that will modify pitch of songs I playback so I can work on singing..  Not overly zealous to get into DAW until I have time and a system with more RAM and features.  That will be around the holidays this year.

You mic into non powered mixer then patch to a powered mixer then to PA cabs...?

I'm thinking you do that only to use the amp in the powered mixer, right?, Cause the non powered mixer offers more options than the powered mixer, right?

Agreed Keith,  My powered mixer is the Soundtech quikmix 6 (hardly anything) my nonpowered mixer is an old teac that has frequency cuts and boosts, etc... This is just for small room use at times trying to sing myself, and when I have a vocalist over I accompany on piano,  I also have a patchbay and Keyboard mixer for patching my synths and keyboards into the mixer... Just low volume stuff to bring the singers volume at least to a level that will sound decent with a BG piano... I seldom use the mixer myself.. Certainly don't even bring to a level where even clipping is a concern

You're in a condo...how does that go over with the neighbors?....A piano can be rather loud.

MUCH MUCH better than the drumset, bass guitar, saxophone, and electric guitars.  Usually I'm not that inconsiderate however, I at least wait until they are sleeping before I start playing.


Guy upstairs only home two nights per week,  kids across the hall are great, they are young, love to party, love noise and have two black labs that sing louder than I can play.... Guy juxtaposition is only home for a few hours to sleep at night,  I wait until the neighbors are gone before I play, usually around 12-5 I'm alone, weekends they all suitcase... {probably to someplace quiet for R&R), My current neighbors are great, I had one neighbor who wasn't quite so tolerant,  so my violins made a deal with his dogs that perhaps they should relocate.  Fortuneately between my condo and the other 4-plex there's a huge cement block, and that muffles a little bit of the Marshall and drum sound... I've taught them about the importance of having a SOH.

I do need a small house Keith.  The few times I did try recording the upstairs toilet flushing, and the domestic spat across the hall sort've put an anticlimatic end to the love ballad  :(   I think I'd be lonely with no neighbors making noise.  That's part of the problem with a house.  I like life around me.. (Even though it usually tends to run off in most cases)

This caulk I was telling you about Keith ?  I realized exactly what it smells like.  White out !  No wonder it got to me.. The stuff still smells
