Last year, unknown to my regulars, I started recording them in October and when Christmas came, I gave each of them a disc with them singing about 10 different songs on it. Had about 30 good solid regulars that I did this for. I used green and red holders for the discs. It went over very well. And Bigdog, it wasn't hard to do or any big problem. Anybody can do it. Well,...almost anyone.

I just record them all on 1 blank DVD then rip the songs out at home then Upload to esnips and send out my bulk email to all of them then they download the MP3's directly, all for free, their the ones putting food on my table.

There is an issue here that you all seem to be ignoring. How many of you jumped all over any and everyone that mentioned downloading songs, they didn't pay for. I won't name names, I'll spare you all the embarrassment. BUT you know who you are. :O
What else haven't you been telling us?
That said, how do you figure that giving away recordings is legal? I'll wait for an intelligent, honest, responsible reply.
If you think it's oK to do, then anything goes?

What a wonderful idea! I may have to steal it. Thank you

It's call the "fair use" section of the Copyright Act. Read it sometime. As long as you're not charging, it's the same as recording at home.

Tim, as you've pointed out to me about file conversion, Fair Use doesn't cover the recording done by a COMMERCIAL company. Even if there's no charge being done, the sheer fact is, if customers are coming to a show, and that show provides a recording option, they are indeed profiting by this action.
No harm is being done, but it's still against copyright laws.

Since you want to bring up 'legalities' for wherever that came from since that wasn't even a part of any discussion here, running a show from a computer - at least anything that you have to rip to it - is just as illegal, but you say you are moving that way as well!
But recording someone singing for their own use - while yes technically illegal - is a pretty different scenerio than file swapping a blank karaoke song 10,000 times over.

So we can agree that everyone on here is illegal to some point that they feel, is acceptable to them. They are taking a risk to a certain point. Cross your fingers and hope you don't get caught. Never admit anything and play dumb to the end.

But again, not sure why you started talking about the legalities, it's already been talked through ad nauseum & it was stated in the opening post not to discuss that aspect - since most already know the argument regarding those. jamkaraoke wrote: For arguments sake lets not talk about the legality issues.

Lets say at a show Jon sings a song and I record his vocal into a wav file on his flash drive. He takes it home and using a inexpensive mixer like this mixes it with the music. Then he emails it to his mom...Then she burns it to a cd. At which point is the law broken? And who should pay the fine?

Then you better not move to that computer you were talking about. You'd apparently no longer be 'professional' or completely 100% legal.

Bigdog maybe the reason for alot of animosity on this forum for you, is because everytime someone discusses using corded mics; using a stage; or anything else you don't do, your response is, "I'll just continue doing "professional karaoke." Which is the same as telling the rest of us, that we aren't professional.
Don't mean to sound ugly, but the more I find out you don't do, the more boring your show sounds.

Recording a singer is not against the Act as long as no money has been exchangrd for the service and the recording is not used commercially.

It is probably because his head is really bigger than his abilities & when someone says they can do something that he knows he has know ability or know how, he has to up his stance again stating that he & only he is the professional. Because every time he makes that claim, he is stating exactly that! No one that records a singer can be professional. No one that uses less than top of the line equiment can be a professional. Anything less than $600 mics is not professional.
See his mentality? Reminds me of Brian Douglas' mentality - HMMMMM, BigDog = BD, Brian Douglas = BD...........................nah couldn't be!

Yes, after 14 years and all the shows, it's a little boring. But what isn't boring is the hunderds of thousands of dollars, the boringness has brought to me. :asleep:  :O LMAO
Money talks and BS walks. Talk a mile in my shoes.
Didn't I agree that the things that have worked so well for me might not have the same effect on others? Maybe others can not do what I do, the way I do it. Maybe they don't understand it. Maybe they don't care, because they think that they have all the answers. So if you are totally happy with your karaoke income and you are working steady, please ignore my statements. My methods also include the use of psychology, to encourage more crowd participation. Maybe before engaging in uglyness, you should do a little homework on the subject.
Someone else said they thought the use of a curtain was not needed. Yeah, if you want to look like a total jerk. Nobody wants to see all of the black wire spaghetti under your table. I can see it at a wedding now. LMAO Real class and professional as HE*L. You'll get more work looking like an explosion at a black spaghetti factory. White trash karaoke at it's finest.
Please, I encourage everyone to ignore anything I say, that could increase your income or your professionalism or your reputation. That will only help to insure my future boring karaoke income.

If the bar paid you to do karaoke, you used it commercially.

In no way attempting to be ugly. Simply trying to say that some of us don't appreciate being inferred, that just because we don't do what you do makes us any less professional than you claim to be.
We can only go by what you put in print. You don't help others climb the ladder of "success" by stepping on their toes. You help push the person on the ladder in front of you up, then while reaching behind you, pull the person below you up.
