Thanks Lonman. If I understand your last response correctly a mic with a lower frequency response will pick up the lower end better.
DUH! :idea: Light bulb just came on! Man! I'm slow today.

What kind of system is your mic hooked up through? There would be no point in getting a higher quality mic if your running it through a Wal*Mart type system.

I'm also a mic carrying member of the Shure SM58 gang... but I REALLY want to get a Rode NT-1. I hear they are great studio type condenser mics for the price and I know large diaphragm condensers are better for recording than dynamic mics like the Shure. I'm not sure if the NT-1 would be too sensitive though. Anyone have experience with this mic?

It's a good mic, but is a standard studio mic. Not a handheld - you do not touch it at all, should be mounted in a shock mount set-up. Really good quality studio mics are very sensitive - the moreso the better. Lonnie I guess in some eyes my system would be a walmart setup. I run a laptop thru an alesus multimix 6channel fx mixer to Wharfdale evx15p speakers front of house and a pair of small crate powered speakers as monitors. I know you dont have a lot of time for the alesus mixers but it was the only one available in my price range that would send the efx to the monitors, I like to hear what is going front of house. its just me and my laptop onstage most of the time so I need to be able to set up and sing knowing what I am hearing is what they are hearding _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel... This mic also looks like a very good and inexpensive condensor mic. Looks great for home studio vocals. It's the CAD GXL2200. Includes the shock-mount too. One inch diaphram like the Rode NT-1 at a cost of only $69.95.

Actually I just picked up an Audio-Technica MB-4k condenser mic from Strait Music in Austin. I was talking with the guy and looking at the Shure's and he asked me what I was doing with it. I said singing, and recording studio type stuff. He said the condenser will pick up more detail and is a better choice for recording in a quiet environment. He said the dynamics are great for live performances where you don't want it to pick up all the bleed back from the other instruments. Since I plan on using this thing to connect into my computer and sing acapella with headphones seems this may be the ticket.
I haven't tried it yet though. Still not sure if my pc soundcard and all is up to the challenge of higher quality input. Perhaps I need to purchase a new card, and perhaps a mixer to plug in also.

Bill,
If you have a mixer that have phantom power then you need not worry. If you don't have one there is no justification to buy one, all you need is a mic preamp that have phantom power. It is the cheaper route. This one have a good review

This particular mic can go phantom power or internal batteries. So, for now I'll be trying it with the batteries.
Should be interesting to see how hard it is for me to align the vocal and backing music tracks within audacity. Sounds like this is something a lot of you do all the time though - eh?

Just found out tonight I bought the mic and it doesn't have the cable to connect it to anything. Guess that's what I get for buying Pro quality. Now, I guess I need some type of pro sound card, or a USB mixer panel to plug into the computer. Hmmm....I have some other threads going on that topic.
Some day perhaps I can actually create a high quality recording, but it doesn't look like it will be this month.

rat shack has adaptors for 1/4" to 1/8" for hookup to pcs... also usb connections, and I think an XLR to 1/8"
