I am interesting in what everyone is using. It seems there are quite a few of you doing it.

So what type of machine are you using?

And are you recording the whole night and then bringing it home to burn individual discs for patrons?

Normally when I recorded I used an Alesis ADAT 8 track, mics & music recorded separately on its own tracks - this way I can record the vocals dry as well.   I have since sold that however.  I am now in the market for a multi track hard drive - 4 tracks is all that's needed however I would need it to be able to record at least 4 tracks simultaneously, so i'll probably end up getting a digital 8 track.  Once the tracks are down, I take it home & mixdown, add effects & dynamics processing & master it to cd.

It comes out of the headphone jacks into the dvd recorder (not sure of the manufacturer off hand).  Each singer has there own disc.  Pop in, record, eject.  That easy.  They bring them back until they're filled.  No charge for recording.  If they don't have a disc they can buy one from us for a buck.

Babs I use the M-Audio delta 44 sound card. It has 4 outs and 4 ins.

In the cntrl panel I have these selections for record in..(bottom pic)I choose mon mixer.. From the compressor outputs in the rack I run mic 1 & 2 to 3/4 respectively... The mixer out with fx is routed into 1/2

In the delta 44 cntrl panel  I can mute all but mics (3/4) and track vocal only.. I can unmute 1/2 out and track the music still in digital form (no fx) and mixes with mic  Or I can just select 1/2 in and just record mixer out.

I hope this makes sense......

In software with multitrack capabilities all these ins and outs are availible i any combination also..

When I track vocals only later on I import the vocal and music into sonar3 then mixdown apply fx etc then master for a cd.... Or they can take the vocals to a recording studio for mixing....Or they can mix at home on their computer...

Hey Ollie, do you record on the same box that you play the CDGs from?

Also, since that card is PCI host based, is it a resource hog?

I use Roxbox which uses 2 winamps, one for KJ one for fill or DJ. With the direct sound winamp plugin  karaoke is routed to 1/2 out.. The DJ is routed to 3/4 out....The karaoke player is routed directly into 2 mixer channels. The mp3 or Dj player is routed thru a Nano-Compressor, which is used to duck with the announce mic, then into 2 mixer
channels.

With this daw I have now I can have roxbox running and recording and the resources run from 1 to 3 %.... For serious recording we use sonar3 and usually with it I track 1 vocal directly from the mic compressoe or sometimes with the 266xl bypassed and track 1 uncompressed and another track using the compressor plugin in sonar3. That way we can bounce the 2 vocal tracks down and set levels for the best sound. Ok thats lets say 4 tracks for mics an 1 for music.. I really havnt maxed out the number of tracks I can use so dont know how many...Usually I import the music into sonar3 and use it for playback but they do have to know the words. But I can run rox and sonar3 together no problems. I run 2 hard drives and use the big hard drive for all the record files...

The pics above are another new install and didnt have the onboard sound as options in the pic above but I can actually start another winamp and use the onboard sound out or in  while I am using the delata 44.. In fact I have tried using the onboard with a griffin iMic at the same time with no problem...

Upon request, I can bring in my BR1180 cd-recorder digital work station.

It's a bit of overkill for simple recording.

Robdog had it correct that a simple dvd recorder would work well in situations like this. One of my competitors in Portland did this, and could hand you the cd at the end of the night. She just had to "finalize it"... so she could take them out and swap other cdrs (or dvdrs) for individual singers.

To me, it's a bit too much work to do... but opinions vary!

If you take your HEADPHONE OUT OF YOUR MIXER
TO THE INPUTS OF A CONSUMER GRADE DVD PLAYER/RECORDER
THIS WILL RECORD A DECENT QUALITY RECORDING ?????

Its just a higher level to drive headphones but the vol cntrl can be turned down to a record level.

With a DVD recorder I use the 1/4 inch utility out from my mackie board directly to RCA input on the DVD audio. It never misses.
