I have found by saying things in a particular way it will get the crowd
to join along. I thought I'd share a few of mine hoping you'd do the same.
I'm always looking for new ideas. Some of my favorite KJ nights is when I can
get 90% of the bar singing back lyrics or dancing.
Songs that people sing along to like Redneckneck Woman, Sweet Caroline, What's Up, Born to be Wild etc... I would say:
*It would really help me sing this song if everyone would participate. I wouldn't
feel so all alone up here.
*During the songs I may call out particular peoples names to get there attention to
sing or say now everyone sing.
*I bring the cordless out to the crowd and have different people sing the reply back to the song or point the mic to the crowd.
* I love to do the song "What's up" by 4- nonblondes and in the chorus where it says
What's going on? I'll say a persons name before and they yell back, what's goin on?
A 1st timer comes up to sing - I may make a joke about popping their cherryoky or ask everyone to welcome them and be kind, I'm sure they are nervous.
I'm amazed that if I announce it is time for a slow dance, everyone all skate. I get a ton of dancers. If I say nothing the singer may have 1 couple dancing.
A rocking tune - same thing. I'll ask everyone to get their booties ready to shake and invite people to dance in front of the stage. We don't really have a dance floor so I think that is why they don't dance unless I say it's okay.
Ideas ideas ideas I love getting the crowd involved - I'm sure you guys have tricks up your sleeves too.

I announce that I'm gonna do a magic trick, and I ask for a female volunteer. As several hands rise into the air, I slowly slip a latex glove over my right hand for all too see........wow, you should see how fast the hands go down. Don't get may female singers comming up that night.......

If it works Babs, that's all well and good. My singers really don't want to hear every drunk in the place screaming while they sing. They are serious about karaoke. And they have a higher talent level. Most of them. Loud talking gets some of them excited.

There are certain songs at my shows that people sing because they know that they will have crowd involvement. Sweet Caroline (Bah Bah Bah...so good, so good) You never even called me (She got runned over by a damned ol train) and YMCA (the dancers) are three that leap to mind.
However I will sometimes encourage the crowd to clap along to a song like I Love Rock n Roll or I believe in a thing called love.
Twist and shout has me encouraging people to scream at the top of the build.
I try to let people know that dancing IS allowed at the karaoke show, just please don't do it in front of the monitor!

I use nothing but wireless mics singers can sing and interact with the crowd all the time. The guys sing to the girls the girls flirt with the guys everyone dances with the singers. Wireless mics are the only way to go for crowd interaction.

On the nights that I haven't been working, I've been making a trek to another Karaoke bar about 25 miles from me. I go in this weekend, and it' like a funeral home, everyone sitting there glum faced, just kinda sitting staring off into space. I ask the KJ what the deal was, and he tells me that one of their local faves bid farewell to this world a couple of days ago. I give the KJ a list of 4 tunes and told him to play then one after the other without any breaks in between songs. He was using a dual deck so not a prob.
First tune-I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow. Instead of staying on the stage I take his wireless to the middle of the room and sing. At the end of each verse where the backups come in, I would lean over to a table and hold the mic out and let them sing the line. Well....first line didn't go over, but it started getting a little better with each verse. At the end of the song, I could see the smiles starting to appear.
Next tune-You Never Even Call Me by My Name-during the spoken part, I sub some of the words with my own talk about how the songs last verse was written in dedication to their departed friend, and everyone should sing it at the top of their lungs....which they did.
Next tune-Okie From Muskogee, asking that everyone keep singing along with the tune.
By now, we've got hand clapping and folks leaning in together singing along.
Last song-Hurt/Johnny Cash, when I finished you could have heard a pin drop with the exception of the sniffles from even the meanest toughest looking of the bunch.
I raised my drink and ask everyone to raise their glass and give a toast in honor of a fallen friend, then turn to the person next to you, give them a big hug or a firm handshake and tell them how good it is to see them tonight.
All these folks needed was for someone to let them get it out of their systems. Now I'm not saying that the KJ on the job couldn't have done the same thing, but he was also pretty down in the dumps himself. Not knowing the guy gave me the edge of not being personally involved, and I don't mean that in a harsh way, but it let me view things from an outside objective that the folks there couldn't do at that moment.
The rest of the evening went with folks getting up and singing songs that their buddy use to do. Ever heard of a Karaoke wake? Well I guess there's a first time for everything.
But anyway, sometimes it doesn't take a superman to be a KJ, it takes a human being, and letting the crowd also know that you're human as well. Music is what brings up together and sometimes music is what we use to deal with lifes traumas.
Song and laughter are good for the soul
But anyway enough about all that.
James
