It was a Stevie Nicks disc. The graphics did not swipe, but the words were in fact on the screen & flipped like a page when a verse was done - the odd thing was, it did not indicate on the disc ANYWHERE that these tracks were on it. She said she was writing her name on the disc & noticed in very wee letter in the middle clear section - 'cd+g' and decided to try it in her player. She played every song & noticed there were 2 tracks at the end, sure enough those were true artist karaoke tracks. Has ANYONE come across any other regular cd's that had karaoke tracks?
Some kids' recordings do (Pokemon soundtracks and that sort of thing).

I was looking up the name KTV ONLY because an old set I had was KTV. I was curious as to whether that was an actual manufacturer of electronics years back, or a name such as "Kmart" brand, etc..
Anyway, this came up, thought I'd share. It's about Karaoke. Unrelated to my search

Quote: Give it 5-10 years and you'll be singing karaoke tracks backed by the ORIGINAL artists with that artist's videos playing behind the lyrics!! By then the equipment will probably be cheap and advanced enough that even your local garage band will feature karaoke versions of their songs on the $5 CD they sell at their shows!!
You guys are way behind time.

Ok I actually found a small list of cdg encoded storebought regular cd's. They aren't necessarily karaoke format, but have other things like pics & bios, etc. If you have any of these, check & see.

That is a cool thing....too bad my primary karaoke player doesn't support VCD. So the music on these is the original artists as well??? Good quality??

They are original artist recording, some of the recording sound very 'old' and some of the video are in B&W. So if you like those early 60's sound, then yes they sound good.

Me too what a great set of VCD's. I made a few of my own VCD's also but they took me about 4-5 hours each. I used the original music video and swapped the karaoke audio then made the graphic file . Syncing it was tiresome though. You can check out a few if you like here:

rob,
Those videos you have are very cool, but I'm sure that you know those are very illegal to use in a public karaoke show without expressed written concent from the artists.
I have some buddies who are in a GREAT band that plays 80s new wave covers. The keyboardist was a video artist in college and the had this phenomenal video and light show that included an interactive 80s trivia game during their breaks and the original videos synched up to their live performance all over multiple projection TVs that were part of thier setup.
Anyway, they got popular enough in the area and word of their show spread enough that they were sued by one of the original artists for using their original video for profit. They lost in court to the tune of $7,500 in compensation to that one artist (luckily no one else chimed in) and had to discontinue their show. They told me they were working on producing a new show, but they currently have not played for about 8 months, so I assume they are finished.
So if you are using these videos in your show, BEWARE!!

the original footage discs are supposedly made for public shows, and they fall under the karaoke licensing issues just as much as the cdgs, topher.
What Rob is doing with converting the vcds to cdgs is paramount to what I do with the cdgs and convert to computerized format.
Format shifting isn't legal, but I have yet to see anybody come after you for this. As long as you own your original music, you should be ok. Course, I'm not a lawyer, and don't even play one on TV!

The original footage discs are packaged that way and sold on the shelf that way, so I assume the company that makes them has a license and contract in place with the people who OWN those videos to use those videos in their product.
What Rob is doing is recording videos off of MTV, laying another product over it, then making money off of packaging that product in his show WITHOUT an agreement with those who own those videos. I could be wrong, but I doubt Rob contacted Green Day and got permission to use their LONGVIEW video in his homemade VCDs for use making himself money at his karaoke show. Then again, if he is not using them in his show, then no problem. BUT he can't make money off something the other artist created without that artist's consent, and that case is way more cut and dry than the laptop debate, which is technically illegal as well as documented several times throughout this forum and various watchdog sites. The bottom line to that debate is that they don't enforce it, which is probably the same reason Rob can use artist's videos at his karaoke show.

I just realized that you probably didn't follow Rob's link. He's not converting those ORGINAL FOOTAGE discs to a different format, like the impression it sounds like you have, he is recording MTV videos then creating lyric tracks over them and making CDGs with the two together, which is HIGHLY illegal if he is using them in his public shows.
Follow his HOMEMADE VCD link and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I hope this hasn't been posted already...I didnt read the whole thread...
Pay karaoke...Like a juke box...You push the number of the song you want to sing and enter your name. The machine calls you up and you sing.... A compnay then comes out and switches the disc out periodically to keep the selection fresh....
Maybe they have this in other places in the world...Perhaps..But I figure if technology and cost are driving factors then this is the way it could very well be in 10 to 15 years....

Wow Rob, great stuff. I suggest you go legit, strike a deal with the record companies and start making these babies full time. Add some fancy looking lyrics and a bit of fine tuning and they'd sell like hot cakes. There is a huge gap in the market for this stuff that's waiting to be filled.
I'm opening a karaoke box (private room club) where video background will be emphasized rather than blue screen. There are a couple of major karaoke labels that produce karaoke videos in the West but you can't beat the original music or video so I'd buy your entire line. The only original karaoke videos I have are the Original Footage but first of all, there are only about 200 of them and they don't seem to be producing new ones and besides, a lot of the time, by eliminating the vocal they also eliminate quite a bit of the background music and vocal as well. Their Rivers of Babylon is a good example.
Anyways, food for thought but for sure this is the future

I saw a system exactly like this about three years ago in Atlanta. It was a big box about 4.5 feet high and about 2 feet wide with mic cables a mics coming out of it. The interface was just like a modern touch-screen juke box. It was $2.00 to do a song and the machine took bills and quarters. During the 3-4 hours I was there playing pool during prime karaoke hours, there were plenty of people who went up and fiddled with the machine, but no one sang a song, so I can't say exactly how it "called you up." I did ask the bar manager how much the thing cost, and he told me it was somewhere in the range of 12K to buy, but they leased it from the same peeps they leased their video games from for a small monthly maintenance fee of like $25 and a % of the take of the machine (I know my bar only gets about 25% of their take from our Golden Tee/Bowling machines that are on lease, so I assume it was something similar.)
Anyway, I don't think a machine such as this, no matter how much people get used to it, can replace a human host who can CONTROL and guide a show in many directions by READING the crowd. Who is going to lead thge crowd in singing happy birthday to the girl at the front table and play the Beatle's "Happy Birthday" right afterwards? Who is going to announce that John Q. Singer is shipping off to Iraq right after he sings "Proud to be an American?" Who is going to keep Little Miss I Think I Sing Better Than Everyone from singing out of turn? Who is going to hand otu cards and promote the karaoke show during off hours?
A machine jsut can't replace a host!!
