Yes, Alaska has quite abit of coastal area.  Followed by florida (peninsula) for continental US.  These I knew...

Grover Cleveland held office during 2 nonconsecutive terms. He was our 22nd and 24th president.

S = "This Man"
F1 = "This man's father"
F2 = "my father"
S = "my father's son"
(S = me or my brother; I have no brothers => S = me)

"This man's father" is "my father's son" => F1 = S = me

The man holding the picture is the father of the man in the picture; the man in the picture is his son.

A man walks into a pub and sits down at the bar, and simply orders a water. The bartender looks at the man, and then, quickly pulls out a shotgun and points it at the man. The man says "Thank you," and leaves. Why did they behave this way?

He had the hiccups ("hiccoughs" for you old-timers).  I didn't look it up, but I have heard it before so I sort of cheated.

Have you guys ever tried out the "Monty Hall" riddle/puzzle?  The problem with that one is that even after the answer is explained, most people still think it's wrong.

I'll tell it anyway, knowing that attempts to figure it out will result in endless arguments (hey, it is an internet forum!).

Okay, so Monty Hall, host of the old "Let's Make a Deal" TV quiz show, tells the contestant that there is a prize hidden behind one of three doors.  Monty knows which door the prize is behind.  The contestant guesses Door #1.  Monty then opens one of the other doors, Door #2, revealing that Door #2 did NOT contain the prize.  Monty then offers the contestant a choice: stick with Door #1, or switch to Door #3.

Question: Is it to the contestant's advantage to switch?  Why or why not?

Enjoy.  I'll be back to witness the carnage later.

There are two approaches you can take on this, one is probability, however in such a case you'd likely by-pass the mathematical probability approach and realize that Monty is NOT going to show you the door your prize is behind, hence HE knows you likely picked the correct door, and is going to try to cajole you into switching.

Since he opens a door HE knows the prize isn't behind, and not the door you picked, it changes the actually statistical probability. Chances are since HE knows the correct door the prize is behind, you picked the correct door, this is a huge psychological clue that you are given by him offering you the chance to switch to the other door... Odd's become better than 50/50 that you picked the correct door and should NOT switch.  This is tricky.  It integrates psychology and probability.  But psychology of Monty Knowing the answer supercedes the mathematical probability. He gives a much bigger clue when he shows you one of the doors your gift IS NOT behind. I can't give you exact equations.  That would be tough... Probably something more like 60/40 in favor that you picked the correct door ? The math exactness here is too difficult for me to do. I no longer can show this type abstraction mathematically.

This type of puzzle, is among the toughest to solve. It involves more than mere chance. When the host KNOWS the answer and gives a clue, since he has knowledge of what's behind all three doors, you also can deduce from options he doesn't exercise. In fact someone who's adept with stats and probability would likely have a tough time with this type puzzle because it goes outside of the mathematical box.. Based on the hint, YOU DO NOT switch !  There's a reason he's showing you THAT door !

Yes Tom,  Hiccups are the correct answer.  I wasn't able to solve that one years back.   I never liked that one anyway  LOL

I guess how it was phrased was a real gun.  I suppose that's why I didn't understand.  If someone pulled a gun on me hiccups or not, doubt I'd appreciate that type scare...LOL.  But I suppose in terms of a :cute: type riddle it works.. Oh well..

Ollie,  Sorry missed your question.  The Great wall of China can be seen from space.

Great Wall is man-made, not natural...unless I misread the question?

Back to Monty Hall: I respectfully submit, Kappy, that Monty would have opened a non-winning door whether or not the contestant had chosen the winner. No matter which door is chosen, one of the two remaining has to be a non-winner, so his actions would be scripted in as a tease.

At this point, you hav a 50/50 shot of having the right door, I would think, and changing your selection would be a matter of personal preference. Odss are neither for nor against you.

Then again, I have not yet had my morning coffee and this is the obvious answer, so I will not be placing any bets.  :O

Yes Dave,  But I assumed Karyoker meant "One of the seven ancient wonders of the manmade world", and just phrased this incorrectly.  None of the natural wonders could be viewed from space.  The grand canyon I believe is only 10 miles wide at it's widest area... That wouldn't be viewable from space I don't think. Unless this is a trick question, because an erupting super volcano would be visible from space, of course I think Ollie meant one of the manmade wonders.  I do know the Great Wall of CHina is the ONLY manmade "wonder" of the world viewable from space.

ONLY if Monty randomly opened doors.  But we know he doesn't.  The fact that Monty will NOT open the door the prize is behind changes the odds.  Remember, the purpose in him opening the door is to give the contestant an option to "change their mind".  There's a motive.  He's not arbitrarily opening doors/curtains.
