Ollie,  I really wanted to take a college level astronomy course when I got out've school,  A local University offered the course, and I wanted to take the course for fun.  There was an obstacle however.  The entrance exam required 2nd year Algebra.  I couldn't do the math.

kappy's right... our closest star neighbor is Alpha Centauri, and it's 97 light years away... the light from it takes that amount of time to reach here. What we see when we look at it is what happened 97 years ago!

Let's just put it this way Ollie.  If the Sun were in fact 2000 light years from Earth, I'd be able to shut off the A/C.
Wrong... ya wouldn't be alive to do anything! LOL!

If the bucket was full to the brim, the fish would displace his own weight in water.. 5 pounds net

If the bucket was partially full of water, 6 pounds..

and I was going to say, it's pretty cruel to put a 1 lb fish in only 1.5 qts of water.

I was turning this riddle over to the ASPCA as we speak  LOL

All else considered the logical equation would be 3+2+1

I'm too friggin old to be doing that type stop and go driving Ollie,  At 50 I get carsick, and would need to make sure the bus had power breaks.  Is this another job I need to hold for at least 5 weeks before I can collect unemployment ?

Does anybody remember a riddle that goes something like....

"That other person is my fathers fathers son" ?  I forgot how it went, and I'm too lazy to google it !   Can someone tell this riddle assuming they know it ?  It was a good one.  I'll keep my mouth shut,  I don't even recall if I know the correct answer anymore... LMAO

Unless you rip directly and have a decent soundcard or external D/A the quality will be different given that the compression typically used is lossy compression meaning something is lost.

This is typically perceptual enconding so the algorithm strips out frequencies at levels that it beleives the human ear can't hear. Obviously every ear isn't the same and the higher the level of compressio nthe more content is stripped out. If you stick with higher bit rates the loss is minimal.

As someone has already stated it's all about perception and after drinking and exposure to loud noise no one will be able to tell the difference.

So with that in mind you could play the good quality stuff for the first hour until people are suitably drunk and their hearing thresholds are shot then pack up get the goodmans player out and get ratted urself  LMAO

Ollie,  It surprises me who well respected Pioneers name became. Pioneer had always been one of the cheaper names in the earlier years.  They were practically a dept store brand that didn't even compete with RCA (as I recall).  Wasn't Pioneer a front runner in the laser disk area ?

RCA & Philips was the main ones in development of the laser disc.  Sony & Philips  had the first CD technology.
Pioneer was one of the firsts to get the laserdisc to market in the late 70's.

I'm not technical enough to know the subtleties of how sound is generated from a computer harddrive vs a decent CD player playing a decent quality CD..

I've heard a few discuss computer just doesn't sound as good.  While others have said this isn't the case.  Like anything else, I'd "guess" the quality of the drive, computer components, and cords used has a lot to do with all this as well..

As things stand technologically so-far.   Are there advantages to CD players sound-wise ?   Has this been proven to be beyond subjective ?

Ollie,  I need to head over to your site,  I've been quite busy, but I have a question about the 2510 conversion ?  Remember that ?  I think that's what it was.  Mod'ing SSB rigs.

I build computers, and am into such hardware aspects, plus I do videography which has many similar issues. I also understand audio issues for the most part.

The answer to your question is there is NO difference assuming you are using the same format (file media type) on computer versus (I assume) standalone cd player.

If you are using digital to digital with same format - basically same file they will sound the same.

Differences come into play when you choose different formats such as cdg, wav, mp3, wmv - along with recording and bitrate differences including compression.

Other things that will make them sound completely different are hardware differences such as the quality of the hifi equipment that you have hooked to your cd player, or the quality of the components in your computer, or the quality of the components that you have hooked to your computer to reproduce the sound i.e. speakers headphones or audio processing capabillities of your sound card or sound chip on the motherboard.

One example is play a cdg in your computer cd player off the cd disk and then copy that file to your hard drive and play it there. It will sound the same. The hard drive version may possibly play better without pausing because it has a lower latency and usually less resource intensive than the cd player. But basically with all computers nowadays cd players (in computers) won't bog down like that unless you are running tons of apps at the same time. You will notice this type of phenomenon though if you play a dvd disk while you are doing other stuff on your pc especially if you have a low end computer.
