Often the original sound drivers are "WOW, Surround Sound" or equal..
This can provide the unwanted "Dual audio processing" the leaves the sound a bit tinny and/or muddy..
The cause can be, adding an audio player, (WinMx) that wants to be the boss, and your "On Board" audio is still there spitting out prcessed audio..
The result can be distorted sound..

its an alesus mixer, although I may connect to the spare crate mixer I have so as the alesus stays with the rest of my gig rig and I dont have to keep disconnecting and packing up every time I have a gig
I have a peavy mixer/amp as well but that is a bit bulky and seems overkill just to record a few ads and songs

If you were not going outboard into a mixer, then the SB's would be great. But you will be using XLR mics and needing true line level inputs/outputs via 1/4" balanced jacks.
You can use the SB's if you only use your machine for music creation, storage and playback via PC audio system, or to interface to home consumer level stereo or theater components....You can use adapters to actually connect the device to a mixer, but it is not good for sound quality in that mode.

Yes, it is decent quality, but is not what you need for live sound reinforcement via pro mixer and rack gear....It is essentually a SB consumer level device, not pro level....all you need is a card that uses 1/4" jacks both in and out and has proper software...no mic or headphone jacks, no spdif, no nuthing except 1/4" jacks for live playback via pro gear.

This computer doesnt go to gigs. It sits at home. I use a laptop for gigs. This computer I use to record ads for clients who prefer to use my voice rather than the common ones on local radio and also to record demo tracks and subs for SS.
That is not to say that I am not following everything you are saying and am in agreement with it also. But this computer is not used for gigs.

yes the onboard has all of the above and I have added winamp. Ok so how do I prevent the conflict?

So you use the external mixer mostly for recording..you connect your mics to it and any other outboard FX, then back into the computer?...What do you playback thru?...PC audio or external mixer connected amp/speakers?

the mixer has my mic plugged in. I take a line out of my mixer and into the soundcard. I then take a line out of my sound card and into the mixer which is hooked up to active speakers

If I am just running a record prog over a practise session (I do that when learning new material) then I simply record on the fly, ie the music is coming out of my computer thru the mixer and speakers and I am singing to it as the mix is then being recorded back into the computer. (did I mention all my music is stored on puter? I dont use any external hardware)
If however I am recording ads or jingles for clients or I am being serious about recording a song then I use headphones and turn the speakers down. I am one of these people that has to have monitors on I cant sing with headphones on both ears I go flat.

Morgan, try patching CD player into the mixer, and recording straight into PC via your existing card....Eliminate the 2way in/out burden on your chip set, buses and harddrive, and see if it sounds good nuff.

What mobo are you using? The comps now with the improved ac97 codecs put out awesome sound... It is hard to say without knowing exactly what your gear is or how it is hooked up or configured. Are you listening to the results on the computer speakers?
You say you are doing ads Are you attempting to put voice over bed music or jingles in general. I either case I would recommend a software mixer such as [url=http://cgi.ebay.com/CAKEWALK-SONAR-HOME-STUDIO-VERSION-4-XL-MUSIC-SOF
TWARE_W0QQitemZ140021505052QQihZ004QQcategoryZ41786QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem] this[/url]
With a decent setup the vocal tracked into a wav file is then mixed down with the backing which is imported into home studio.
Need some more info to be more specific. I am a wicca not a psychic
