Pearl Jam released vinyl in the 90's, didn't they ? if I was into them, I'd know this. I just recall hearing it.

Many bands did release on vinyl - you can still get them today, special order only most of the time & through dj music supply places - at least you could up to a couple years ago, haven't checked since.

I wasn't aware those terms were antiquated. I use them all the time. As a SWL as long as there's Ionospheric absorbtion, and changes in phase there's going to always be flutter. It still exists. I have a tape deck, I know what Wow is too... I never knew these terms were "out". I guess this means I'm "old" ?
I also collect Hammarlund and Hallicrafters SW rigs.
Oh yeah, and for you chicken banders out there...

That makes sense. I didn't think of that but isn't TT much easier to que than any other form of recorded music ? Is there really anything that's currently faster per song than eyeing, and que'ing an old fashioned turntable ? Seems that decent lighting, and an album are easier than electronic CD devices, but I don't know. No trays, no digital counter, easier mechanically.
One other question. When kept in good condition, what medium offers the best longevity without deterioration ? Is it Vinyl or tape if well protected ? I heard that CD shelf-life won't be as long as VHS tape. Is that true ? Longer than standard cassette because of grommet, and other mechanical probs, but tape and vinyl last a long time when kept in good shape. Not certain about this.
Let me ask it this way. Awhile back your folks were talking about a type of CD which is a better quality, and outlasts standard CD-R's
What is the average anticipated shelf life without degradation of
Vinyl
Standard Cassette
Reel-reel tape
8-track
CD
Also, the sound quality of VHS is supposedly quite good, is it not ? Among the best forms of high quality playback ?

actually there is a guy who lives locally who still presses vinyl for folk all over the world. There are still some enthusiasts who prefer it.
He has his own studio as well I believe.

Yes Morgan, There are. I am going to one of the analog recording boards and reading up on it now. I forgot the details as to the differences in perceptable sound among various audiophiles. While I don't have the money to be an audiophile, and consequently given my lack of tech ability got laughed (politely) out've audiophile BBS's.. I have tuned piano's, and have a sensitive enough ear to be one. I'm one of those pathetic "Princes taste, and a paupers pocketbook" types.. I just don't spend time recording or playing back stuff.. I have the equipment, but don't play with it. I believe an LP and an excellent chain of componentry (everything kept in top shape) offers amazing sound. Likely more warmth to some. To me, especially for classical and rock LP and tape sound great ! (everything run thru tube that is). I've put CD thru tube, and I like tape and vinyl sound more.

Steve, I've had CDs last for 25 years with no problems as far as shelf life... where vhs physically break down and are more volitle in heat and cold environments.

Thanks Matt. I guess that would make sense. When did CD first come out ? early-mid 1980's ? I saw my first laser disk show around 1981 ???.. I suppose CD would be approaching 23-25 years maybe. It's hard to believe that CD's have been around going back to the days of the Timex Sinclair. I guess they have been ! WOW. Or at least the Radio shack TRS Coco systems. WHich would be around 1984. I'm thinking the introduction of compact discs would've been around 1983 or 1984 when they became affordable ?? Yes matt, that's a real problem with tape, once it get's brittle, or is exposed to any heat, cold, etc.. That's the end. Also anything magnetic. Great way to wipe out tape..

Ive got old 8 tracks that are too oxidized to play...
78 and all lp'swill still play
You can play 78's with stereo needle but dont play stereo with the old thick 78 mono needle.
out of round rubber drive wheels , belt slippage and tone arm bounce cause turn table wow and flutter

Ollie, by rubber drive wheels do you mean grommets ? or no. Rubber drive wheel on the tape device ?
Huge problem with ANYTHING rubber. it breaks down, melts, etc... great way to damage tape !

VInyl of course I can vouch is fine after even 45 years assuming it has no direct exposure to sunlight, and is protected.
I won't include bakelite 78's in the same category LOL They just don't have what it takes !

Im not sure what you mean by grommet. A grommet was first a rubber washer device in chassis holes to protect the wires from the sharp edge. Then in certain devices they were used along with springs as shock absorbers to keep the drive steady when vibrations occured.
Refer to this ] for turn table mechanics and it shows the drive wheel...

Audiophile listen to their equipment rather than the music. Thus : this cable sound better than this one, this speaker can go down to 17hz etc.

By grommet I meant that little rubber wheel on the 8 track cassette that melted all over your tape, and 8 track player leaving a horrid gunk all over the place ruining the head, etc.. and if you were lucky you could get some of it off with Isopropyl alcohol and a long q-tip. But that doesn't do much to salvage your favorite 8 track which is now damaged.
James gang rides again
(OK, you want me to get more technical ? It was the black wheel) see below, it's the horrid little black rubber wheel that always ended up melting damaging the tape, tape player, and making a nasty mess of everything. Later the wheel was made of plastic instead of the rubber that ended up falling apart, cracking, melting, etc. It was a mess.

Yep, that's the name. I was wondering if it was the Capstan wheel. Thing is, it always either hardened, or if the tape was kept in a car for any duration, it melted and damaged everything. stained everything too. I fondly refer to it as that damned stupid black rubber wheel in the plastic case..
Wait a minute... Ollie, Isn't the Capstan drive wheel part of a rotating drive system on the tape player itself ? Would this still be a "drive wheel" if it's inside the tapes cartridge ? I didn't know "drive" referred to any part of the tape cartridge. That's why I assumed it was just a rubber wheel, or rubber grommet. I think technically the wheel the capstan pushes against and turns is called "Pinch roller wheel". That pinch roller wheel made a disgusting mess of everything as it aged when hot...

Ollie, My Akai tape deck has one of those rubber capstan drive wheels. What should I do to keep it conditioned ? armour-all ?
(oh man, I suspect I'm going to get a huge laugh out've this question)
Saddle soap perhaps ?

My roomie got on the cd bandwagon the year it premiered. I THINK it was 1985.
It's funny now to look at that one cd... and one from nowadays.
The cds then were twice as thick as they are now. Likewise, not near as flexible or lightweight.
He got this cd thinking it was a greatest hits, and instead, it was a live cd. he hates live cds, so asked me if I wanted it.
Scorpions Live.
What a FOOL he was! !

The CD was first introduced in 1982! The technology that made cd's possible was actually discovered around 1943 - the PCM coding anyway. I had my first player in '84 - first cd's Moody Blues - The Present & Pink Floyd - The Wall!
