Any opinions on which you prefer in terms of warmth of sound thru a decent playback device ?


If kept in good condition, (in the case of 33 rpm albums this means meticulous condition)   I find Vinyl, and reel to reel tape as well as VHS to offer excellent warmth in sound.   CD although crystal clear, I'm not sure how it compares "to me".

{let me add,  I don't miss the "skipping" and bouncing around of tone arms everytime a pin drops, or loud bass frequency emanates, that was a HUGE drawback}

I still have an old trf receiver. It has a dynamic speaker maybe10-12 inch The sound was awesome. But speakers in those days up to the sixties had thin cones and god awful dynamic coils With the thin cones it didnt take much energy plus they could handle treble better than cones now.. However they had to be reconed perodically..

The sound was awesome but tubers have a low frequency roll-off. A solid state device can pass all the way down to DC but the tuber used coupling caps between stages that limited low frequency response.. The inter-electrode capacitance in the tube elements and even hookup wire placement wreaked havoc on high frequency response. But the inherent vibration of tube elements give sound a warmth which they can almost simulate but not quite.

Then came hi-fi (high fidelity) in all its glory which improved the bass and treble by increasing amp bandwidth. Stereo was invented along with eq and you know the rest...

THey also are better in mid's rising, aren't they ? That's where much of the warmth comes in as I recall. Ollie, I never noticed the low roll-off personally,  Tube bass response is often much fuller, and much punchier.  It offers a more dimensional bass response IMHO... This is why I prefer even tuber bass rigs to tranny.  I might be missing something here.  Not sure.   I could feel the bass pass right thru my mid-section with decent tube bass.. With tranny I feel very little.  It doesn't "hit me". Listen to an orchestral selection on a decent maintained tube rig... Listen to the tympani's in an orchestral arrangement. AMAZING...  The timbre of those kettle drums is something unlike you'll hear with tranny.  Another thing I personally feel, listening to doppler surround on an analog source such as tape, vs CD or even thunder...  train passing..  On my surround system, the tape really is authentic when it comes to the recreating the doppler effect. CD comes close, but doesn't rattle the windows the same way.  Perhaps similarly, this is why the tape loops on the Mellotron offer the most genuine attack and decay abilities of an instrument or sound. It offers the whole ambience, not just the synthesis. This is a plus for analog.. Digital of course has it's advantages elsewhere

Kappy, sorry, but I don't miss the old days of having to tape a nickle on the top of the tone arm.   Guess that once again dates my age.

I think the cd is so much better than the old records.  I think where the sound my fall short is that younger folks who don't remember how the "old sound' used to sound; lack the ability to set their mixer EQ to reflect that sound.  personally I think the quality of MP3's suck.

I have gone from the 78's to the 45's, the 33 1/3, the 8 track and then the wonder of the cassette. God love the period of time with the 8-Track.  Music had to be good then.  My reason is because to listen to a certain song, you often had to listen through the entire tape to get back to that song.  That alone dictated that ALL songs on the tape had to be good.  Now days you simply skip to the ones that are good.

How many times can I remember us guys and gals having to take an extra trip from the Dog-n Suds back through town around the Dairy Queen and then around the K&N, JUST to be able to hear the song we wanted to hear.  But you didn't have to put up with a bunch of crap songs inbetween.

Yep Kelly !   I had four buttons I could push on my 8 track that divided the tape into 4 parts..  Which meant often having to wait about 10 minutes to hear the one song on a tape I just bought.


Ollie,  Doesn't bass roll-off have to do with the couplers between the triodes ? That can be adjusted somehow ???    Don't try to get me to sound techy.  I have a reputation to uphold !  


I had a bakelite 45 player,  used to listen to "Pictures of matchstick men" over and over again on it too !  Stuck it facing out the window, and thought I was hot stuff

The lower the frequency the more impedance a capacitor has A cap cant pass DC so to couple the signal from the plate which might be 450 volts DC to the grid of the next tube which might have 15 volts Dc base bias a coupling cap was used.

No,  mine was a Kraco that was mounted under  the middle of the dash.  That way if your honey was sitting next to you, it gave a good reason for moving your arm over between her legs to push the buttons.    No pun intended.

I had to mount  my Realistic 40 watt per channel RMS 8-track system on the transmission hump.  I had no room under the dash of my 72 Gran Torino sport-bondo special !.   I had CB stuff,  police scanners, 2 and 10 meter transceivers. and an FM converter under the dash along with a black and white television.  The bedroom was in the back !  Much of the time I slept there alone too  LMAO

I had a little green pine tree air freshner hidden under the dash. Soft furry dice hanging from the mirror with a crucifix ( I wasnt even catholic) and and a hulu dancer back by the rear window.. I could shift left handed with a column shift doing 80 down a dirt road and.......  LMAO

I had a crucifix too, and I'm not exactly christian.  Thing is, it was big, and genuine pewter !  How could I resist ?  Especially with the open quiana nylon disco shirt !

Four particular 8 tracks bring back many fond memories.
Dark Side of the Moon/Pink Floyd - I was working at a carwash making a 1.75 an hour. But it was enough that when payday came, we'd get a case of beer, a bag of that green stuff  :shock: and hit the roads cruising. We got the tape the day it came out, and man oh man, did we have a blast.....well that is until a semi ran a redlight and ran over our car...kid you not, we were in a small import car and the truck ran completely over the engine area. I was the only one that got hurt, I was sitting in the back and got slammed against the window and broke my collar bone. My buddy who was driving, his dad owned an insurance company, and he ended up handling all of the legal crapola. I was young and dumb, the only thing I ask for was my medical bills to be paid and two hundred dollars, so I could buy a Les Paul Junior double cutaway from a guy down the street.... Hey and having to be laid up for several days wasn't bad either as I had several lady friends who were more than glad to come over and play nurse.

Agents of Fortune/ Blue Oyster Cult- again we bought it the day it came out, drove around for hours, listening to it over and over, I mean what a kickarse album.
Got to see the show the next night, by then we were very fried puppies.

The Tubes/The Tubes-White Punks On Dope was my anthem at the time and I listened to that tape almost everyday until it finally busted.

Mother Focus/Focus- a departure from their regular classical/jazz influenced rock, with most of the album being on the soft side, which was great, because that's the tape that I played every time the ladies came over, hubba hubba, what memories it brings back.

But anyhoo, I digress
Just got home from a gig and thought I'd share another nothing from the memory vaults.
