Was that you? I'm sorry, I thought it was a quote from somewhere. You are spot on with the reality check though. I recall hearing myself the first time out of a rec studio. I wanted to  :banghead: . That's why I stopped singing all-together.

i cheked out the songs on esnips-you were right-the sound is awesome!  what kind of board do you use?

I run my show completely by myself and it would be hard for me to
keep things running smoothly without delay. I know people would enjoy it on
a regular basis, but I choose not to do it. I did record everyone one night and gave a copy of the cd to all that sang a couple weeks later. I learned from doing it just that
one time it was going to create new problems for me I didn't want. Some regulars are way to serious about their singing. Problems - I just get the music started and it's can you start over, they sing the song and decide it isn't good enough and then want to do it again, they argued about who sounded better and who got more songs on the cd, they complained that someone was making noise when I was recording them or someone distracted them.

If I did it on a regular basis I probably would get quicker and more proficiant at it, but the learning curve and headaches of the 1st few months aren't worth it to me. Besides I wouldn't charge anything, so it would be a free service.


I think it is great to do for your customers if you don't mind the headache. People really seem to like it. If I needed to add it to get business or create a crowd yeah I'd
start doing it. But right now I don't need to create more work and expense for myself.

I think Robdog has a great attitude about it and I'm sure his customers love him for it. I think it is wonderful he doesn't mind providing the service. You are a better man than me. Aaaarg the complainers

Thx Babs but once everything is hooked up it's easy just push record at the beginning and stop at the end of the song. The extra work is at home on the puter ripping and editing. I've already recorded about 500 songs for singers now and you hear a lot of them pulling into the shows listening to themselves on their car stereo's it's awesome.

We have never pushed recording at shows But this is what we evolved into. Recording at shows when the efx might be cranked a little high and playing back later helped me in the long haul by analysing the sound with a different method. Most of my singers now that want recording sessions are singers trying to improve their singing ability record apply efx listen re-record apply efx listen.. Mic tecniques can also be taught this way.. If somebody wants a full cd to send to relatives etc they are recorded at home with more of a studio type arrangement , they are hardly ever recorded live Altough sometimes recordings over several weekends are good enough to burn to cd.  The only other method I use is tracking vocals only at shows into a wav file Then mixing later..

Before I was a KJ my friend and I would go to karaoke bars and sing.
She heard herself on tape and refused from that day foward to ever sing karaoke
again. That was 15 yrs ago. She comes to my shows now and still won't sing. She isn't a very good singer, but we had a lot of fun in those days.

Have you ever had someone not want to sing again because they heard themselves recorded?

No but the first time I heard my voice recorded I didnt want to talk again. I was stting there asking who da h*** is that flaky hayseed?.. But actually the first time I heard my singing voice it was a system that wasnt providing much help. I heard it and went wow!!! There might be some potential there. Tell your friend there is a song for everyone even for the tone deaf.. Also tell her a baby doesnt just get up and start walking unless they are a colt and colts cant sing...

I had someone desparately want me to record them as they were going back east for a family reuninon.  He didn't want an on the fly recording but wanted to have his vocals recorded separately.  Well I sold all my studio gear.  So I took my old cassette recorder with a good high bias tape in Dolby C.  Fed the vocals into one channel & the music (yes in mono) into the other - this is where a good digital 4 track recorder would come in handy.  Took it home & downloaded it into my Mackie Tracktion program & edited from there.  Was able to eq the vocals independently from the music & normalize the volume of the vocals so there wasn't much fluctuation.  Mastered into a cd-redbook specification & it actually turned out much better than I thought it would.

It would be interesting to hear then & nows of the same songs.  I found an old tape of mine that I did back in '94 of Never Been To Spain.  May record it again today as this is one of my better songs & sounds much different than back then.  
Maybe a new theme for the SS.

I agree 110%...Many of the kjs in the LA area have inferior mixing and the audience is totally into themselves yelping about so how could the sound quality be decent.. A few years ago at one place the kj offered to record you on tape for 5 bucks a song...

I've recorded myself at home a few times and even submitted a song to SS about two years ago.  My feelings are similar to Babs' friend's: not too impressed with myself and don't really want to listen to it.  I'm not SO bad that I never wanted to do karaoke again; in fact I'm still into it as much as ever.  But I have no interest in buying a recording of myself.  I wouldn't ask for a recording, but if someone made one without me asking and offered it to me for free, I'd take it and listen to it.  Once, probably.

Now if there were relatives or friends or something that said they wanted to get a CD of my karaoke singing, I'd do it then.  I don't expect that to happen.

My wife after my karaoke practice: "You know that high part, the falsetto?  That was painful to listen to.  Please don't do that in public."
