I have a pretty great move where I hold a tooth pick in my mouth with my foot! Then I smoke with my other foot all the while walking on my hands. This is so great! You have to see it. (Film at 11:00)

Taylor Hicks of American Idol seemed to have achieved a perfect distillation of Cocker's all time worsts "moves".  Watching him perform (and I am seeing him and the rest of them tomorrow night in St. Paul) made me think at times I was watching the Tinman's specialty number in "The Wizard of Oz"....he moves about like he just came out from under the anesthesia or had been suddenly revived from the dead after many years of being deceased.

What to do with your hands, watch Taylor & don't do any of that!!

You don't have to be animated to get your point across, you don't have to make a gesture with everything that can be gesturized.   For ballads, I am more moved by someone when I can FEEL what they are singing by the simpleness of their actions, a simple pull down of the fist, a deep look from their eyes to an audience member, the aforementioned pointing into the the crowd, etc., I want to see & feel the emotion in their song with simple action, this is what I personally look for.  For upbeat songs, definitely should be dancing around, getting the audience involved with clapping your hands in time over your head, make them feel like an integral part of the show.
Some people I see in contests their stage gestures are almost laughable.  Ever watch Dirty Dancing when Baby's sister is practicing for the talent show at the end?  This would be a "what not to do".

I certainly agree with you here Michael. I knew it was rigged when the best male singer went bye bye with 4 or 5 left to go. I sort of went, what?  For that talentless turd Taylor to win had to be rigged. I was actually embarrassed for him on a couple of occasions (like when he was dancing on his back) and he ...wins? wth?  I think Idol was making a statement by saying, "this guy is not your usual processed hot bod with a voicetrack". Look he even has gray hair! This will go a long way in keeping the show going longer!

I swore that kind of show off before he ever won because at one point I knew he would.  No way could this vote have been real.... (My rant on America!)

That's the mentality I see in the way they packaged this travesty.

Thank you Bigdog (including the crotch grab) and others for the viewpoints and suggestions! Probably like most things, I'll get up there and simply forget any motions I've devised and it will all come out just as well.  Thank you, Michael

That's one cool looking cat. Eh, that is a cat right? Or is this some type of new fangled interplanetary alien? The truth is out there - you know?

Hey Jeff, you remember that guy we saw at Spotlight that time that was humping things on the stage? Definitely a no no IMO. I remember some of the guys around us wanted to kick his (@$%&#!). They were getting pissed.

^^Man this censor program comes up with some weird word replacements.

Oh, I forgot my suggestion...perhaps walk on stage and do a quick 360 degree spin and then moon walk back and forth a bit. --Billy Jean's, not my lover....woooo whooo hoo.
