I hate when I come up with a good recipe because I never measure anything. I can recreate something that I did well but it takes a few tries.

I have to make a lot of stuff from scratch because of my stupid dietary restrictions.

I've got something else here you can try... you MIGHT like it;)  I can pretend i am italian, or chinese, or thai, or mexican in heritage.. if you want;)




And miracle whip? Oh gawd, kill me, that stuff is rancid.

I make my own mayo- egg, oil, spices, and lemon juice, or vinegar.. depends on what I am in the mood for, just need my trust cuisinart. Tonight it was garlic mayo. And i LOVE MAYO... but, that miracle whip stuff? Oh gag me with a spoon. I don't like bottled crap.


I hate fried food, don't like the greasiness, and i HATE gravy.. but then, you havent' ever tasted my mothers, to know WHAT turned me off of it:) I don't eat ice cream, don't like chocolate, and I hate french fries, potato chips, salad, or anything involving potataos.

My daughter has never had a potato in her life. Is that odd? Mind you, she is only 4, she has some time left yet:)

We don't have sugar in the house either. Not a bit. No candy, no junk food. NO processed foods. I don't buy anything bottled, canned, or boxed. She has NEVER had soda, or juice that wasn't "naturally sweet".  When my daughter TRIES sweet stuff, she doesn't like it. She is used to fruits  (fresh or dried), and to her, candy is too sweet, cake too rich... she will have one bite, and then set it aside. I probably sound like the meanest mother in the world... but, you have NO idea what kids around here eat. The family next door feeds smilie face french fries, chicken nuggest, or kraft dinner to their children EVERY night for supper. For breakie- pop tarts. For dinner, a pogo. There is NO way, i would EVER allow my daughter to eat like that. I think teaching good healthy choices EARLY, is the best way to teach them to make those choices later in life.  

Did you all need to know that? Probably not, but I wrote it anyways:) so there.

 Havent heard that in soo long I used to say it all the time when I was younger  

Oh, I forgot my sis n law is Filipino and makes this eggroll kinda thing called lumpia and a noodle type dish called pansit ( sp?) soo good ! I get so jealous at family functions b/c her food is always the 1st thing everyone goes for nevermind that I baked the ch chip cookies from scratch !!  LOL

I'm a miricale whip girl myself growing up in a family of 7 kids ya gotta make bologna taste good somehow !! To this day we have to buy both miricale whip & Hellmans Crazy ! I also grew up on generic bread and early in my married life we had to buy two seperate breads too. I thought the other bread was mushy and it stuck to the roof of my mouth, we found a compromise though its called Butterbread. Not too mushy & not too crumby.

, i have always said "gag me with a spoon"... Lol, i never really thought about it. I think i got it from my mother. My mother is EXACTLY like me, it is frightening.. i think she is "dirtier" Though:)



And white bread? like, the bagged stuff you buy in a store? That you can SMOOOSh, and it somehow goes back to its original shape, like that memory foam stuff? Nasty nasty NASTY... now, THAT is where "gag me with a spoon" fits in well:) My daughter doesn't eat it, she molds it into shapes, and then watches it turn back into a loaf of bread. . There was one kid in my daugter's class in school who took wonderbread and fake jam sandwiches to school... EVERYDAY. i guess it is incase the kids lunch bag gets stepped on, they know the sandwich will spring back to life:) (only jam, because peanutbutter isn't allowed in schools)

So you bake your own bread too ? Wow ! You must never get out of the kitchen! I wish I was as comfortable in the kitchen as you I just dont enjoy cooking like a normal woman I guess. I get it done as fast as possible clean up the mess & there it is again ~ dinner time~  Its like sometimes I wanna say to the family " you ate yesterday, whattaya want from me ? "  LOL  Just kidding ! They get fed every day really Ha ha!
Anyways I wish I had you for a mom !  :)

Mexican? Now wait a minute. I have a thing that once I get north of Texas, things start getting a little weird as far as Mexican food goes. For awhile I lived in Colorado. Some Mex was tolerable and I had to really hunt for that. Once I was on a contract in Nebraska and got brave enough to try the Mexican, and they put oregano in the salsa. It tasted like Italian marinara sauce - ! Am I to believe they have decent Mex food in Canada? Maybe I should go to Canada sometime just to see what it's like. I remember back when I would drive to Amarillo and it felt like I was near the North Pole. Canada must really be different.

I will say I like New Mexican Mexican food with blue corn tortillas and green chilies. I also like interior Mexican food, as well as of course various forms of Texmex. I hear Calif does ok too.

Good for you Gilly. Sounds like you are doing it right. I'm trying to go that way too, but probably haven't gotten to your level yet. I'm thinking about what people ate before agriculture, and commercialized food processing came on the scene - along with our modern lifestyle, pesticides, preservatives, chemicals, etc.  People around here are the same as far as they feed their kids. They all eat hot dogs, or mac & cheeze, - plenty of soda and sweets. They're killing their kids IMO.

You need to get out here. I live near the artichoke capital of the world, at least they claim it. I find artichokes in stores very cheaply and fresh when in season. I like them too, with little spiced mayo dip made for them.



She's definitely a California girl at heart. I mean all that stuff is in abundance around here. She would fit right in here.

Same for me Keith I hate eating. It takes too much time. and Im allways hungry at the wrong time. Once a day if that...is enough for me.

Hellmans here as well  Best Foods is still not the same even tho it's the same company...   miracle whip I find gross.

When I do Eat  and If Crystal or Gilly wants to cook me something let it be Pot Roast Mashed Potato's, Gravy, Corn,
Then Ill pay them back and eat for hours

Peanut butter allergies. Kids have severe ones. Sooooo no peanut butter and Jam sandwiches in schools:) (And, i make my OWN peanut butter, from peanuts, and a little peanut oil:) Reallllly good:)  




Eben---- I would love to move there then:) Actually, my husband is originally from California:) Lol, maybe skylah inherited his tastes?:) There IS a store here that occasionally has some in... but they are puny little crappy things. I still buy their whole shipment:)



Planet_bill-----Actually, a lot of parents say to us.. "How DID you get your kid to EAT that"... well, if you subject them to certain foods from the beginning, it becomes all they know. SKy's fave foods are WHAT she knows. Her first REAL food, that wasn't baby cereal was avacado. Maybe that has had an effect on her choices:) But, if I give my daughter a dollar in the grocery store, and tell her she can have ANYTHING she wants, she either buys fruit, or salami from the meat counter. The workers there love her:) My husband grew up on an organic farm, whith a health nut as a father. I grew up with FAT parents, who eat CRAP everynight. Meat, potato, and a veggie. I was a vegetarian, and I HATE potatoes, so i had to learn to cook at a really young age, and I have to admit to NEVER eating WITH my family. But, my hubby and I combined our ideas, and decided to raise skylah as healthy as we can. And, to be honest, it is MUCH cheaper! NO one ever believes me,  but prepackaged foods are MORE money! When I go to the grocery store, I walk around the edge, and then go pay. I NEVER go into the middle, unless I need vinegar, or oil, or something like that.

ANyways, I am babbling

Years ago my wife would read a book and no more salt Another book and no more sugar.. It got to the point where any meat was out of a pressure cooker and no grease what soever... There were little green things growing in the veg bins in the fridge and even a ham sandwich would be covered with them.

We went down to the county fair to interview Mel Tillis...I walked out of his trailer and the smell hit me. A hundred yards down the midway was a carny trailer frying up all kinds of good stuff.  I ran down and peered thru the window. She was frying this thick beautifull greasy hamburger with cheese melting on it. My nostrils was flared eyes were big and dialated. In a panting voice I said I want that one!!! She seemed to sense my predicament and hurray quick gave me one. I gobbled it down then told her the story.. She laughed and laughed...

Then I was leaning against a pickup on the midway and a cowboy with a cute little thing hanging on his arm came strolling by. Just before they got me she looked up at him and said "Where are you going to sleep tonight?" He blurted out "With my cows" (farm kids at the fairs would sleep in the haylofts) I totlally  lost it She looked at me and rolled her eyes...Oh the good old days....

That is where I get most of my food these days too. I can't buy anything grown in California as "organic" anymore though. The Governator has allowed them to spray their crops with an organic pesticide that has high levels of MSG. Why MSG? Because bugs won't eat it but people will.

Yes. They are spraying organic crops with some of the stuff people want to avoid when they eat healthy. Thanks Ah-nowed.

It turns out that genetically engineered food has made it's way to the diet in the form of corn syrup. It was not approved to be in our diet but it is there.

y'know..... chances are I've never had GOOD mexican food..... I probably just THINK it's good up here..... I'd better not try the good stuff otherwise mine will be ruined for me!

Well, every year they have artichoke festival where you can taste artichokes cooked in every way possible. I will do some research and let you know when that is. Maybe you can make a trip down here.

Speaking of festivals, I went to the Garlic Festival for the umteenth time this summer. I just love that festival, despite the crowd and increasing cost to go there. I mean it's garlic lover's heaven. There has to be like 50 different dishes with garlic as the main theme, even garlic ice cream and garlic wine. If you have never been to one, make a plan to attend it at least once. It's a experience of a life time.

I can see that. Last time I went to Canada, what they pass as a good Mexican restaurant really sucked. Sorry but that's the truth. I know Texas has Tex Mex cuisine that is really good (in parts of Arizona as well) but California definitely has authentic Mexican and central/south American cooking. There are a huge number of Mexican restaurants run by mom and pops here that is just too good.

It's not just Mexican. There is one of largest Vietnamese population outside Vietnam in this area. Big Hmong population in central valley. So, southeast Asian food is very good and plentiful around here. Add to that another 60-70 nations represented here in food, it's food lover's heaven. I can go to a different country food per day and never run out of option for weeks. Within 15 miles of my house, there are some of best Korean, Japanese, Chinese (several regional cuisines), Persian, Ethiopean, German, French, Italian, Mexican, Greek, Thai, Indonesian, Cambodian, Indian, Vienamese, Russian, Pakistanian, Salvadorian, Cuban, Jamaincan, etc.

Not to mention US regional cuisines like Californian, Cajun, Texas BBQ, etc.

One of the main reasons why I don't move out of this money trap area is the food. Crazy huh?

eben, since you like Seafood and foreignish cuisine, I recomend trying Caldo de Pascado sometime. The name itself is not appetizing, unless you've already had it. Directly translated it means fish soup.

It is better than chicken soup for a cold. I make it for my baby when she's sick.


If the name sounds too "gross" the soup might not be to your taste.


If you find yourself in a restaurant that uses words like "Mariscos" and "Camarones", then you are in the right place to try the Caldo.




I think I'm gonna steal the last of the Haggis now.
