Speaking of way back. Anyone recall where this came from ?
"Where where are you tonight, why did you leave me here all alone ? I searched the world over and I thought I found true love, you met another and Pffft you was gone"

I remember that being a recurring musical "schtick" on "Hee-Haw"--it was usually just thrown in at any odd place. The performers were comprised of "Grandpa Jones", "Junior Samples" and "Goober" if I remember correctly. Sometimes it was the funniest thing in the show.

Used to watch that show all the time with my mom....another syndicated TV show I used to get a kick out of was Sha-Na-Na's, which ran some time in the early 80s.
Example:
Setting: High school classroom.
Teacher: Lenny (Lenny was the guy with the beard that played sax), can you tell me how much is 9 minus 5?
Lenny: Uh....you want dat in a ball pahk figya?
You get the idea...

I get the cast of Shanana and the actual group confused. Was Shanana an actual group ? or a cast ? Were these musicians, or actors ? Yet another thing I don't recall. Shanana sort've like "Slade" am I thinking of ? wasn't the actual 50's band was it ? They acted 50's ??
IOW, Was Shanana a spoof on 50's music and groups ? The Greasers, etc ? Didn't they dress up 50's, but were just a barbershop type quartet that did 50's style in the 60's ? Similar to the Yale Alleycats ? A talented group of actors and singers that went on to do other things in the white collar world ? Pretty sure they were just a 60's Ivy League Glee club, or Barbershop quartet

Your last assumption was correct Steven. Sha-Na-Na was a group that performed 1950s songs--actually they were exceptionally good. The most famous member of their group was probably "Bowser"--I stringbean with a very deep voice who came in handy on many of their doo-wop covers. The band was formed by Lenny, a saxophonist and music teacher at Northwest University if I remember the story correctly They even played Woodstock!
I imagine they are still around performing, albiet with new players sprinkled in with the original members...

Michael, I think the Bowser we later came to know as the bass singer of Shanana, the one we saw wasn't the actual one we heard initially. The guy we saw singing "Blue Moon" was lip-synching wasn't he ? That was an actor ??? There were also casts of SHanana as I VERY vaguely recall..... Wasn't the lipsych'd on Television in a 60's show ???... I think there was a Shanana show, or something like that. Where those we saw, weren't the Columbia Kingsmen who sang the A capella stuff around 69 or so

I'm almost 99% certain they were featured on a number of movie soundtracks embracing the rock and roll revolution of the 1950s, including "American Hot Wax", "American Graffti" and "Grease" (pretty sure about the latter two)....it seems that any movie that featured the voice or presence of "Wolfman" Jack also featured Sha-Na-Na for some reason!

YEP ! That's what I'm thinking of. I need to check Woodstock, Since that was actually Shanana (I think) I'm curious to see their actual appearance, not what we saw in the 50's casted movies

Scott the was the piano player in the outfit... in fact, now that I reflect upon it, they were a very well assembled group, with each guy "specializing" in some facet of rock and roll made popular by stars just as Jerry Lee Lewis (Scott), The Big Bopper (Bowser) and Ricky Nelson (Johnny). It was a carefully selected group of performers....

While we are on this trivia theme, I have noticed many posts here and on SS using the exclamation "Whooo (sometimes "woo")-Hoo". What is perplexing about this is I've never actually HEARD anyone utter this phrase. I'm familiar with "Whoo-Hoo" as an attention getter (and also the name of a popular tourist resort in China) but it sounds awkward not used in that connection, and "Boo-Hoo", used to indicate periods of lachrymosity and the name of a popular Guy Lombardo song and the ever popular "Yahoo", which needs no further explanation. There was also a popular chocolate beverage of my youth called "Yoo-Hoo" (not to be confused with "Nee-Hi", which I think was only sold in the south).
Related to the above is a line from a Cole Porter standard, "Do do that voodoo that you do so well", which stands alone as is.
Another bone of contention is the familiar declaration "Yay!" Actually what is meant is a derivation from the word "Hooray" so technically, it should be 'Ray!" I knew you were all waiting for this....

I beleive the term woo-hoo has been made popular by Homer SImpson...He says it all the time. I have used it in real life myself..Ussually when I am about to do my happy dance....

This is what throws me off. Originally Shanana was just A capella. So as time went on, things evolved in different directions and branched out I suppose. Woodstock wasn't a bad thing to have on a resume I suppose. How many would even remember Canned Heat if it weren't for "Woodstock" ? I'd have liked to have forgotten them the first time I heard them LOL

Thanks Chuck. I'm curious as to whether or not Columbia University has the rights to that name

Sha-Na-Na was in Grease, and in fact, have a couple of their "covers" done on a couple of Grease songs they performed on Karaoke.
Bowser was the original from the group, but I don't know if he's still with them.
