This isn't how I do it Tink, but you might try CD+G player http://www.tricerasoft.com/karaoke_soft ... loads.html. This free player will allow you to play CDG's using your computer cd player. May work with DVD's also. It has a small screen to show the lyrics.
I think you can run the CD+G Player while recording using Acoustica: http://www.acoustica.com/mp3-audio-mixer/ Acoustica is how I was going to do multitrack recording. You can record vocals and instruments all on one track though. They provide a free trial but you have to pay later. There are probably many other freewares to import / record to mp3 your files. Try www.snapfiles.com.

Here's from another thread recommendation:
SwingcatKurt @ Fri Aug 04, 2006 5:56 pm wrote: Keep it simple----just hook your karaoke machine up to the sound inpur jack on the puter. Then using someting simple like AUDACITY--simply start playing and singng and hit the record button on audacity and PRESTO!! recording on computer! Just that easy!
I also have Audacity downloaded and have been using it to normalize the recordings. It is here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Hmm...reading the tutorial on multi-track recording it sounds like you could record your karaoke instrumental background music in as track 1, and then play back track one while you are singing track2. This allows you to have separate control of instruments and vocals as I had mentioned previous. I may have to play with this myself.
So hook up your karaoke player to your pc sound input jack - you'll probably need a 'Y' cord from Radio Shack to do this. The 'Y' take your 2 channel stereo output down to the single pin computer input - usually back of pc (but some have on front). Download / install free Audacity. Play karaoke track w/o singing while recording track 1; then playback track 1 in Audacity while singing in mic through karaoke player connected through input while it records track 2. Next adjust your volume levels on the tracks until they sound right. Add any effects such as Normalize, or Equalize - export to MP3. Note that with Audacity you have to download the LAME MP3 encoder which is free. It tells you to do this first time you try and output an MP3 with Audacity - but after that it works. I know - I just tried it. Good luck. Let me know what's up.

Wow! thanks for all the tips, Bill!
Only problem is I don't have a karaoke machine
Was told this could be done with just mic, PC, freeware, CDG and headphones
I hope this is the case because I'm not quite ready to invest in a karaoke player
Will look at the links you posted, but hope to also have feedback from people doing their recording by the direct to freeware method
Thx again, for all your help
Tink

Tink I just do not see the need of a karaoke machine/cdg player if all you want to do is record your singing. You do not even need the software version of cdg player if you can sing the song without the help of the moving lyric. Quote: I also have Audacity downloaded and have been using it to normalize the recordings. All this can be done FROM WHITHIN the PC. Why complicate the prosese.
Just rip the track you want to record and sing to track 1 of your recording program.
If the program cannot rip directly , rip to your hd and import the riped file to track one.
Play the backing track in track one and record your voice/singing in track 2.
If you cannot sing without the help of the moving lyric ( I can't, and need the lyric) play the song with winamp. make sure you donwload the plugin. Record your singing and then sync the two tracks.
Then the rest is editing/mixing.

Hi Jian!
Glad to see your online tonight!
I know you've used the 2 softwares you recomended in my Budget MICs thread
Did you have any problems with the downloading process for Audacity?
Are there any reasons that Kristal may be better?
I plan to do my download and install over the next weekend
I'm just one of those careful people that likes to look ahead for known issues before I start an install of any kind
Anything you can help me with here is much appreciated
Tink

Audacity is very easy to use and is the most popular among the 3 I recommended. I do not use it anymore, and have non in my pc. The downloading should not be a problem. The main advantage of Audacity is that there are many online tutorial. The main site have a good one and there are many more out there . just google 'Audacity Tutorial"

How do I submit a song?
You login, click on Submit. Click browse and locate the song you wish to upload. (Note: this must be in MP3 format.) Select the Genre your submission is in. Type in the Title of your submission. Enter the original artists name, you may leave blank or add your name if it is an original work. Enter a description about the song. After all fields are completed click the "Submit Recording" button. This may take a few minutes, because some songs are rather large. Please be patient and do not click the submit button again.

If you read my post closely perhaps you could have told that one of my solutions was without the karaoke machine. I guess I didn't elaborate and detail it, but basically it would be the combination of the CD+G player (freeware), and Audacity (freeware) to record it with the mic plugged into your computer Mic in.
