Are there any particular songs that will drive you to stick a screwdriver through your leg as a means of distraction until it's over? For me it is "I Love You Truly" and "You are my Sunshine" and I don't know why, and will probably take a lot of heat for this and be branded a heretical heathen, but "Amazing Grace" (particularly played by bagpipes) makes me cringe as well.
I'm sure there are psychological explanations for some of my aversions of the above (well, with the exception of "I Love you Truly"). I can remember as a teenager getting extremely sick in a restaurant and all I can remember is "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters playing on the jukebox. To this day I have trouble listening to that song, even though it had nothing to do with the situation.
Are there songs that just make you shudder, cringe, wince, or just plain make you want to cough up your corndogs?

Hi MJK
Great topic! I guess my brain is still stuck in "Park" because I KNOW there are songs that make me shudder...but I'll be darned if I can think of any names right now... LOL So I'll think about it...
Now, I can think of songs that I don't like simply because they bore the crap out of me. Most of these fall into the "Anything Buffet-like" category...I'm sorry...I must be weird because I know the guy has a HUGE following...but he bores me to sleep! Also any song that reminds me of him...for example, Seashores of Old Mexico by George Strait. I mean...I LOVE most of George Strait's music but YUCK...didn't like that one from the first listen....
Time for more coffee... :D

I am not sure why.. i just hate the SOUND of it.... And, watch out if I am holding a dangerous utensil (you know.. like a spoon, or a spatula) because you are going to DIE.
There are a couple Jimmy Buffet tunes that do it to me too, but I don't want to mentioin them, and upset the husband:) (Who is a huge fan... oh gag me)
btw, Speaking of songs that make you cringe, on my newest submission on SS... i can't get the "1 NEW!" thing to go away... no There is NOT ONE new comment!! I swear it! I replied to ALL of them, gd it! Wtf! Ok, calm now. I am just going to have a fit instead.... maybe I just need to "Take it Easy".....

Love Shack
My Heart Will Go On
ANYTHING by Whitney Houston
Not because they are bad songs, but because whenever I get a slip from someone to sing one of these, I KNOW I am about to hear the worst performance of the night, pretty much without exception!!

Yep, similarly, when 9 drunken sloppy ex-jocks get up to the Microphone, guys that normally have the talent of a pull tab, I know "Seven Bridges Road" is about to come on, and these dolts are feeling sensuous and artsy ! While the chorus of that song is quite pretty, as done by the Eagles.. It's not the song that's usually put on as a request of those that can actually sing

Songs that repulse me? A loaded question....these are the first that come to mind:
My Way
Hotel California
Any Lynard Skynard Song
All My Ex's Live in Texas
Achy Breaky Heart
Mambo #5
Friends in Low Places
Crazy -. mainly because it's been oversung by inebriated folks
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
American Pie (long version)
More will come to mind later...

"The talent of a pull-tab"
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! I liked that one! That will be right up there with my favorite put-down, "The brains of a pancake".

Any song I sub repulses me. By the time I actually learn to match the lyrics with the melody I've heard it thousands of times.
A few songs will continue to repulse me because they were being played on an 8-track all night every night while I was in the hospital after a spinal tap.
Tie a yellow ribbon is one, trying to rmember the rest just hurts my back.
There were only two good results of that hospital stay, a lot of nurses wanted to dance with me to get me to stand up straight, some of them were real hunies too. The second is not as good as the first because it causes me mixed feelings, I lived.

I can't remember any that I just hate so much that I can't sit there and endure it for a few minutes. But generally I cringe in two situations: the first is when the evening is far enough along that the usual non-singers now have a good buzz going and will get up and sing--but only in groups of three or more. Those are usually baaaaad.
The other is hearing all the overdone songs: Love Shack, I Will Survive, Baby Got Back, Summer Nights, Redneck Woman. What's the name of that patriotic country song that goes "I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free..."? I'm sick of that one too. But it is karaoke, and people can sing whatever they want.

A lot of people love this song but I really can't stand it -- "Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. The term I came up with for this song is "the ultimate white trash love song".

after the time I have spent on this site... Crazy is one I just can't listen to anymore. It drives me around the bend because it has been soooo overdone. There are a few others that are pushing that line too. There are a few Bryan Adams ones that I just can't listen to... thanks to the ctrc (dang Canadian content laws!!)

Shouldn't songs that are extremely long either be edited for bar karaoke, or eliminated from the KJ's library ? not sure.. but that can get too frustrating. 13-18 minute songs can get obnoxious. I personally don't know. Just a thought. In such a setting I would think that can create a source of problems for the audience, or others waiting in rotation.

Holy Cow! You hit it on the head with that one. When Whitney ripped off what's her name with the big chest for "I will always love you" that song was on CONSTANTLY. I would have ripped off a DJ's arms if I could have. That dang song was everywhere. (and look what it got her...hooked on crack....with Bobby Brown) She probably listened to it too many times.
