kelley, to me, the "live" way is the clearest and cleanest way. I'm unsure what Jian really meant...

Sounds like something happened in the transfer process... How did you record yourself off your amp/mixer?

In the mobile studio off the mixer hubby says

That's a good idea actually.

Again, my mixes aren't the best... but when I FIRST subbed here, it was a joke how I had to record. And people didn't hesitate giving me advice on what needed fixing. There are ALOT of people here who have become VERY adept in their mixing skills.

Hey! My daughter is 4, and has a collection of records, and a record player:)

My daughter (who is almost 16.... ) found an old Patty Loveless tape she wanted to listen to the other day & she came up and asked me which way to put the tape in to hear a song on a certain side..... and it was kinda funny to realize "Oh my gosh, she's never really dealt with tapes before". I guess when I still played tapes, she was just to young to really be inserting them herself, so she's clueless. Man, that makes me feel old.  :(

.

That IS hilarious.. but, i grew up with records, and STILL have all of my old ones:) My husband still has a box of 8-tracks in our basement, and my daughter CAN put in a cassette tape the right way.. hell, she works our dvd player better than ME:) She can switch movies herself, etc. I have to admit, to not owning a vcr though..... Justy and I have never owned one as a couple.

We also collect ooollllldddd two way radios...WWII "handy-talkies", etc. We have a lot of different ones, which is sadly pathetic:)

But, again... really off topic... Back TOooo topic,

I REALLY dislike mp3's...it just plain ruins good music. When I have to compress at home, (and not submit), i do it with mpg4 AAC, not mp3, I prefer the sound, to mp3's, but that is a huge source of debate 'round here:). AAC files can be about half the size of mp3 files, of the same quality, which means you can pack more on, if you are worried about space, etc.

Speaking of older reel/reel tapes, vinyl in good condition,  I think many today REALLY under-rate the sound quality of this older analogue stuff, without really giving it a good listen because "it's old" technology,  Some stuff sounds absolutely fabulous on certain tape, and vinyl kept in excellent condition !  Assuming it hasn't started to degenerate..  Many younger folks just don't know, they've never even heard some of this older stuff... My Focus albums on a Thorens TT sound amazing IMHO..

Gilly, that is actually cool that she knows about the older stuff.

Now, my kids can all handle a CB radio fine, cause we ran a bass for years, and had one in each of our vehicles. It used to be cute when she was little like Skylah, to hear her "break" for her dad when he was on his way home from work. (actually, it was SO cute, I'd often let her break for me when I needed to ask him something, cause the truckers thought it was cute too, and they'd shut up and give her the channel just cause she was a tot) hahaha
I can so picture Sky walking around in camo with a vintage walkie talkie strapped on her hip on the playground. She seems like such a mini-you.  :D

But then, cell phones came along, and I sickly can't function without one of the dayum things, so we have CB's, but we don't really run them anymore. And haven't had a bass unit in years.

That is a totally new format to me Gilly. I'm.... really..... NOT computer or recording savvy at all. Maybe I'll have to figure that out, and try it for home cd burning.... Great, now you got me going on a new idea, I'll never get it right, and curse words will be flying all over my computer den today.  LOL

8-tracks in our basement,

Actually Keith, Ollie, or one of the older techs..

What was the story behind sound quality of "8-track" tape ?  Even the sound on the VHS tapes ?   I've heard (but don't know) that these tapes provided among some of the best sound quality ever HOWEVER the problem was often playback equipment quality.  Not the tape itself ?   Can one of you older techs respond to this ?  RE:  Actual tape and vinyl sound quality ????

In the mobile studio off the mixer hubby says[/quote]yeah, I blame your conversion process.

I had to go lower than 128 on a couple of my submissions, and on some songs, you can get away with it... but for a female, that naturally sings in the higher settings, those are the first to get cropped to death in the conversion process.

What mp3 converter are you using? I personally use the LAME encoder with audiograbber, or with goldwave

You might also try doing it in mono, rather than stereo... that will reduce the size enough to make it viable on the site.

If the track sound good in one system it should sound at least good in another system. Was it bad before the convertion to mp3 or after it was converted to mp3.
If it is just  the mp3 that sound bad then it has something to do with your encoder. Try using another encoder.

'Live' recording is best done by expert who know the recording system they are working on. You make a mistake, you repeat the whole proses. It is NOT the an easy way to record and it is NOT the best or the recommended way to record when you have at your disposal a multi track recording software.

For those who have been recording 'live'; into a single stereo track and find that it works for you then recording the vox onto a separated track will do wonder to your mix. Just think; how much premixing can you do with your karaoke machine system? All those can also be done in the pc and more.

Yeah try listening through headphones. When I play mine through my pc speakers I have a ton of base and subwoofer so can't hear myself much on my recent subs. However on headphones it is much better. Also check your bitrate as mentioned although you can go below 128 if you have high quality in first. I'm compressing all mine down to 80Kbps to fit below the 3mb sub limit. Surely they don't sound as good as 128Kbps but there doesn't seem to be a drastic difference. Try another program for MP3 conversion.
