Dang, THis is why this is HARD... I'm so glad was NOT written by Deep Purple.
It's an EARLY ELmore James Song... COvered on Machine Head by Deep PUrple, and vaguely recall early 80's VH did a rendition... as did a few others... We even covered this in the 70,s...

Jeff,
That's not the Song, Wasn't "Garden Party"
but it's alright now
I learned my lesson well
you see you, can't please everyone
but you got to please yourself.
No, my lyrics weren't from that particular song....

..when I walk through the door, there'll be no where to hide.
Listen Donna, now I'm headed for a rest. Straightened out my head, but my ol' heart is still a mess.
Yes I worried, honey, guess that's natural though. Like I'm waiting for a welcome sign, like a hobo...in the snow.
(Anyone...anyone?)

Creme did a version of it... A lot of Creme songs were blues songs written by Emore James, and many of the old blues greats.... Most of Claptons stuff with the exception of the hits such as Badge, and a few others from the 60's decade were blues compositions written by the older bluesman, same with Johnny Winter... That was until he got together with Rick Derringer, and Edgar and formed his great rock band.... Deep Purple also did it, Van Halen did it, MANY did it... Elmore James I believe wrote it... You can look it up, I haven't yet... That would be cheating, and I might be wrong,... Not positive
Btw Jeff, The 1972 hit (I think that was the year) Garden Party was also loaded with esoteric references to Rock and Roll History just like the huge song that year "American Pie".. These songs were fun to try to translate...

Yessir, I know that wasn't the same song. My song was Ricky Nelson, yours was Ricky Ricardo. (lol!)

hehe..... Lucy, I'm home ! WAAAAAAAA
Sharon,
Now I'm confused as to whether Creme, Yardbirds, Traffic, etc did that... Was it Creme, or the earlier Clapton groups, like the Yardbirds. I still say ELmore wrote it..
(had to edit my HORRID engris composition)

I looked it up online Since I subbed it, I figured it wasn't cheating
Deep Pruple did a version of I'm Glad on their album Shades of Deep Purple...1968
Cream did it on their Fresh Cream album
I found conflicting information on who wrote it...I found info that stated that Eric Clapton worte it and then I found somewhere else that Deep Purple wrote it..And one that says Skip James wrote it......But I also found two different sets of lyrics both with the same exact chorus......
I give up on this one.....

As the oldest person in this thread at this time, I had to set the I'm So Glad debate straight. I knew that Cream had the first minor hit of the song on their 1966 Fresh Cream album. The album is sitting right next to me. The author is old bluesman Skip James, but even he didn't originate the song entirely. Here's some quotes from Wikipedia:
" As is typical of his era, James recorded a variety of material -- blues and spirituals, covers and original compositions -- frequently blurring the lines between genres and sources. For example, "I'm So Glad" was derived from a 1927 song by Art Sizemore and George A. Little entitled "So Tired", which had been recorded in 1928 by both Gene Austin and Lonnie Johnson (the latter under the title "I'm So Tired of Livin' All Alone"). James changed the song's lyrics, transforming it with his virtuoso technique, moaning delivery, and keen sense of tone. Biographer Stephen Calt, echoing the opinion of several critics, considered the finished product totally original, "one of the most extraordinary examples of fingerpicking found in guitar music."
"Although not initially covered as frequently as other rediscovered musicians, British rock band Cream recorded two versions of "I'm So Glad" (a studio version and a live version), providing James the only windfall of his career. Despite the band's well-known musicianship, Cream based their version on James's simplifed 60s recording, instead of the faster, more intricate 1931 original."

Might be Skip James, I think both Skip and ELmore were born in Mississippi in the early 1900's, and were Delta Bluesman... I'd never be able to recall the difference... ... If you look at that Clapton Album, or anything really up to "History of Clapton" double album, you'll probably see (again I forgot alot of this) that MOST of the songs were written by people like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Elmore James, and the Delta Bluesman.. Very little they did (that many thought were his compositions) were actually written by Clapton until abit later... These early rock guitarists sat and listened and studied the blues guitarists when they learned... Did ALOT of tributes to them too..

The first Cream album, "Fresh Cream" was the album that had lots of old blues material on it. A lot of the songs on the later Cream albums were written by themselves, their lyricist Brown or other contemporaries like Felix Papalardi. I'm not sure about Clapton's solo work.
Here's the Cream discography with who wrote what:

Quote: OMG you knew this without a web search?
I BETTER know that type stuff, I'm a 50 year old veteran R&B musician, It's the least I should know ! These were years of the greatest ballads, and love songs ! At least many of us older farts believe this !!!
If I didn't know this, It'd be inexcusable.
OK, sorry for chatting in here, it's a game thread...
OK, back to the game...
Regarding rules. My own feelings are that if we all love music, it's nice to learn things correctly. If a Song is written by a composer, and we know the title. Is it enough ? Assuming the song was written in the 1930s, we don't give credit to the actual composer because we don't know him, but instead say it was written by some cover band 70 years later ? IMHO. that's not a good thing.. When we perform songs, and know songs, shouldn't we also know the correct composer ? Isn't it time we do know the correct composer assuming we don't ? Out'ver respect, and just having a clue ?
JMO... We can just name title, but I think it's good to know the composer too...
It's fine if we are wrong, but I think it's fine if we get corrected too.
I was glad to learn it's Skip James, and NOT Elmore because I was
wrong. Those of you that play this game alot in Melly's, and other places
know how you like this game played, I never play it, I dunno..

How about "Cherish" by the Association?
You don't know how many times I've wished that I could hold you You don't know how many times I've wished that I had told you You don't know how many times I've wished that I could mold you Into someone who would cherish me as much as I do you And I do Cherish you

Ok, I've got one...
When day has left the night behind And shadows roll across my mind I sometimes find myself alone out walking the streets

Does that mean you knew that the phrase I quoted was from "Never My Love" ? or was your guess "Cherish" ? But you are correct, the Association was the group.

Worst lyrics I've ever heard: "On Top of Old Smokey"....
that song, plus "I Love You Truly" but me right over the edge..."Amazing Grace" does that too, although I'll be forever branded a heretic for stating so on these pages. Hey, new topic! "Songs that Make you Sick!"
