I want to do home recording and have about $100 to spend.

Any suggesions for best MIC/best price would be welcome.

An SM58 will be good for both live singing and recording; within your budget.

Since the topic here was BUDGET mics, I'm going to assume that you aren't setting up a professional recording studio.  

Unless you are, then I'd suggest the NADY SP5 available at musiciansfriend.com

I used these at my shows for years before I went wireless, and they are great.  Sound good and durable to boot.

For that amount, I would recommend Samson C01U. It's a USB mic and I use it on my computer. The acoustic may not be the best but by directly converting to digital on the mic, it's more likely to get cleaner signal since you don't have to worry about analogy connector or mismatching A/D converter etc. You can pick one up on ebay for pretty reasonable, like $70 range. For the rest of the $30, I would pick up mic holder for C01U. It's spring loaded holder that let's the mic float so you won't get noise from bumping etc.

Just want to begin learning to record and mix before sending a song in for fun
Plan on using freeware friend says will send to me (?Adigy?, I think?)
Planned on buying mic at retail store while shopping this afternoon
Now I think I will just window shop for what's available in retail and explore
other options mentioned here.  Web browse, etc.

Any other thoughts please add to this

I use Audix OM2 mics and they are about $100. Great sound, very durable
and if anything happens to them they will replace them free.

What kind of utilization are you trying to do? Sing to streaming tracks (songs on the internet at special sites), sing to tracks in your stereo (say from a karaoke cdg), or sing to tracks on your PC?

What software are you using to play the tracks?

Audacity is one that is free and lots of people here seem to like. Cool Edit Pro 2 (CEP) is yet another and that's for using tracks on the PC, and you sing along with them.

There are a lot of other kinds of software...

The reason I asked is the advice given will greatly differ...

I personally, when I do it, is record myself live over the stereo out to a recorder... and not use the pc at all. I'm a bit more "Old School" that way.

That is a good mic, but if you do not have a singing mic sm58 will kill 2 birds with one stone. But if you already have a good stage mic then a C01U is what you need.

Intent is to record, mix, and upload to Singer Showcase
Have decent PC, sound card, USB port, and will add needed software
Was told some are available as freeware but don't have any yet.
Was told all I would need is mic and to ask here for help

You are better off with USB since your Analog to Digital conversion is done at the mic. So, your signal is strictly digital after it leaves the mic. If you use a sound card, it will go through at least one connector in analog world, the mic connection to the sound card. Unless you have the perfect connection, impedance match, etc. you may not get better sound through sound card than via USB mic.
