So what do the rest of you think? Is it possible to have a perfect song submitted to Singers Showcase? Can you sing a song perfectly. Can you sing a Karaoke song and sound better than the original artist? Is this possible? Is it possible to do this without a slight remix of the original music such as in timing, pace, inflection?
I was contemplating this the other day driving in the car. I can think of a remix that I like perhaps as well or better than the original. Elton John's 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' was remixed and sung my another artist with the song appearing in the movie "The Lost Boys". Anyone heard this version?
What do you think?

I've heard people do songs better than the original artist in karaoke.
I don't have it in me to do that. All I can do is my best and there's nothing at all wrong with that. I have a bad habit of taking life way too seriously, hence the reminder to myself in my signature. I have to remind myself to not try to be perfect even when that can be achieved. Perfect can be way out of reach and it can kill a person who spends too much time trying to get it. It almost killed me.

Not all the "classic" recordings were sung "perfectly"! I'm listening to Nat King Cole right now do "That Sunday, That Summer" and boy I can find a lot of little technical flaws in his vocal! Some diction problems and some uncompleted words, etc. Despite that, this is a marvelous performance. I think an accomplished singer could do this number "perfectly" but would it have the same impact as Cole's version? Maybe not. In terms of perfection, the other singer may have diction, pitch, lyric interpretation, etc. letter-perfect, but would the tune be as enjoyable as the original?

I totally agree with that arguement.

Perfect in whose eyes? Everyone has a diiferent tastes in music and what
they find satisfying. I can listen to some of todays performers who are making millions of dollars selling their CDs and think they sound horrible. When I listen to others I think it is just my opinion what is perfect.
Now if we are talking about critiquing ourselves, forget it - I'll always find flaws.

I agree Babs everyone's taste is different so perfect would be very difficult to define. I personally am totally incapable of it . However, I would rather hear a song sung with passion and emotion than one sung technically perfect. It adds so much to the song that the technical imperfections take a backseat. When I was studying music seriously, that was one thing that was drilled home to me again and again...technically, I would get a very complicated song very close to perfect - but in striving for that perfection it lost something...almost like it was a job that had to be completed. Finding that happy medium was something I really had to work hard to achieve.
Just my thoughts...

Very good point Vettelady. People seem to enjoy when I sing out of the box -
like blues songs. Where you sing what ever comes to you at that moment. You can't be technically perfect when ever time you sing the song it is different.

Every time I sing a song its different....I like to think better . As I get comfortable with them, I tend to either take a little creative license at times or I just gain more confidence to give myself a push. Or a add a couple splashes of tequila and it changes the whole concept...I think I'm better anyway....I've just learned not to push the "record" button

BRAVO Drea!!!!!!! Well said!!
I completely agree...I would MUCH rather listen to something sung by someone I enjoy listening to...filled with fire and passion...than a technically perfect but mechanical sounding performance.

There is also a lot to be said for making a song your own. I did that with the Megadeth song I subbed. I can't sound a lot like Dave Mustane, but I do a good job of getting that manic thing accross.

I'm not saying I disagree, I just question your motivation.

Okie dokie, now is it possible to be technically perfect like what Michael is talking about AND passionate/full of feeling like what Tammy and Drea talk about. Lots of passion and feeling can involve "losing yourself" in the song. But while "losing yourself" are you taking the risk of losing focus on the technical accuracies? Bottom line, can you have it all in a single performance?

I have come close in the past but one almost always wins out over the other for me.

You know, nobody can probably figure out why one particular version of something is much preferred over the other one! I do think you can be technically proficient and yet imbue the song with emotion and "heart".
