Hey I met a whole mess of those guys when I was a teenager, Harry James (may or may not have been drinking), Woody Herman (a really sweet guy), Count ("it's 'BAY-ZEE', by the way") Basie, Stan Kenton (funny man), Maynard Ferguson (he was just Maynard Ferguson) and at least got to shake hands with Benny Goodman. I used to work on a bigband show that broadcast off the "world famous" Steel Pier in Atlantic City when the pier still had live shows...they often booked this kind of talent for the older crowds and they would almost always run upstairs to the studio for an interview.  Woody Herman was a delight and I can remember him actually rolling up his sleeves and helping me look for his albums in the mess of a record library in the hall (the station had gone to Revox tape at some point so no longer used records; we were the only program that did so all of them were out of order).  I can remember how much I made some of these great people's faces beam with all the knowledge I had of them and their music for a 14 year old.  My favorite person I met was a singer not well remembered today but was quite THE VOICE in his day and that was Bob Eberly, who sang with the Jimmy Dorsey band.  He is best remembered today for being one half of the hit duet records he made with Helen O'Connell, such as "Tangerine" and "Green Eyes".   We interviewed him at the station and another time at a supper club he was appearing at.  His voice was kind of shot by that time but in his prime he made Frank Sinatra nervous; some say it was Eberly who actually made Sinatra jump to become a solo artist and not just a band singer with Tommy Dorsey.  He was one of the funniest men I've ever met and just down to Earth.

Conversely, some bandleader named Zi Zentner, who was appearing across the street at Resorts International Hotel and Casino, made himself a pest by showing up every broadcast and hogging the whole 5 hours we were on the air.  HUGE ego (he only had one hit instrumental in the 60s, "Up a Lazy River") and here was someone the average person had never heard of.  

Sorry for the digression...this was a really BIG part of my life and I don't often get a chance to talk about it.  I was the luckiest punk on earth, I'll tell you that much!

Many that are involved in some aspect of the performing arts, and live in a city where there are alot of entertainers passing thru, would have met a few big named artists.  Whether it's working in Atlantic City, or recording in Atlanta Georgia.  They are around.

I'd like to meet Stevie Nicks she is one  :worship:  "bad biatch"   in my opinoin ! Fleetwood Mac Rocks!!
 I'd also like to meet the guys in the group Boston,  my fav group in thw whole wide world!! Just to see what thay look like and what they are doing now.

I'd like to party with Janis Joplin. I know I couldn't hold my own but the things an artist and entertainer says off-stage can sometimes give some insight to the workings of their minds.

Jann Arden. I just love her.... dunno why.. and after reading her journal book things, I find her hilarious, and very "me" like..... maybe not a super famous artist.. but, I go more for the natural canadian people who actually PLAY an instrument kind of artist to admire:)

I have a friend that dated Stevie Nicks for 6 months back in the mid 80's.. said she had candles all over her house... and he is an Elvis impersonator , no kidding...it was a blind date.. he had a friend that was a session man who was dating a friend of hers so it was a double date....

Musicians are where you find them as someone mentioned earlier.  I just remembered that about 6 weeks ago I was eating lunch downtown at Border's bookstore and some musicians were just packing up to leave. I had just missed the performance but it was Big Bad Voodoo Daddy--had no idea to look at them who they were, but I have some of their CDs.   Talked with the sax player even.  I found their cards promoting their new CD on one of the tables and that's how I discovered who they were.  Curiously, just about a week before this,  I used their backing for "Minnie the Moocher"!  It baffles science!

I guess if I had to pick one famous artist I'd most like to meet, it would be Freddie Mercury... I'm forever in awe of him.  :worship:

Of course there are tons of others I'd love to meet too... maybe I'll go to a really cool tea party in heaven some day.  :angel:

OK, since Mike is too busy I would like to meet Freddy too. Can you arrange that Sheree or do you want him to yourself.

I just finished reading a bio of Elvis not long ago.  I'm not all that familiar with the Elvis story (probably why I read this excellent book to begin with) but did people know he actually had bone cancer at the time of his death?

I didn't know that.

If I could choose how I would go, bone cancer would not be on my list.

Steven Kaplan. Although he may not exist and if he does he might actually be Steven Griffen in Quahog rather than where he actually wants us to believe he's from.

He will be the first to tell you that he's not famous. Just like Michael though, he is in print in a forum that is seen throughout the world.

If the world were truly flat, where would be the edge?

Where all the water was running off. Unless they've recently built a really good levee system. Not sure.

I guess I'll never get a chance to meet the group of Semitic Canadian Scientists that band together to form Steven H. Kaplan. I know they are Jewish because they are experts with guilt and self-loathing. Are those just stereotypes, I always though so until lately.
