Some can handle honesty,  some EVEN know what the term "Critique" means... It's the others that make things tough for all... Additionally, an honest critique takes time, it's not an easy process, why the heck SS has that category eludes me... I believe it's in time just slowly shooting itself in the foot... If people want to submit material, Why not just have the box  "Say hi, keep it friendly",  and the other option,  Just listen.... What the heck is the point of having the critique feature if most don't want one, and as many don't even know what the definition of that term means ?

Websters:  Critique'  (noun)   A swift kick to the general gonad region.

Heckling audience:    "So what are you worried about Kaplan ?  Sub, what do YOU
                                   Have to lose" ?

Kaplan (in little Richard voice)       "OH SHUT UP" !

Realistically, Singer's Showcase is just another part of a business. If administration, and the paying members want a certain layout.. That's how it's going to be.  Otherwise, I'm just another person sitting in the peanut gallery yelling out.. But I do mean everything I say. For what little it's worth.. Still, I needed to get this out, there's little room for actual honesty in the SS, let alone "Critiquing" assuming the person isn't an excellent or at least very good performer.. In fact, the honest Critique is more than not met with "The nerve of you, just who do you think you are?", and that set's a bad tone.. Almost encourages nasty feelings harbored, and exchanged elsewhere...

Those that want honesty, gain very little from that experience. except perhaps believing lies, and that's pretty sad IMHO. Many are having fun, so that's good too... I speak just for me,  I was asked why I'd never sub there, and I explained how I perceive that place.. My apologies to administration for expressing this.. I believe that there really should be more of an explanation as to what it means when a person allows their material to become subjected to Critique, or that feature should be removed entirely !  It's a poor choice of terminology, because it allows for scrutiny, which is NOT what most obviously want..TOO many, just don't "get it"... They are overwhelmed with grief assuming a person tactfully does offer them what it appears they can handle "C"... :Constructive criticism:, but also possible character bashing, etc. Why is it THAT important to have such a category in SS ? if so few REALLY want it, and those that offer it get castigated ? just perpetuating hard feelings, and a nasty cycle.. Comments really are ENOUGH...

Assuming more COULD in fact handle "Criticism", you have too many adults that just don't "read the print" sign, and end up screaming, yet still submitting in "C" even a year later, the person who comes along, is well meaning, and DOES offer an actual critique, end up getting stabbed by a gang.. That's NOT right !   It's almost setting a trap IMHO.... Where honesty loses out... Hard feelings are established, and they don't just go away... EVEN though it's assumed people should know what critique means or NOT sub in that category..  that's moot... If too many kids get hurt by the toy, take the toy off the market... Plain and simple..

Critique does not actually belong there as a category !

It's more likely, that if Critique were NOT that easy to receive, and people who wanted one instead had to specify this, by typing out.. "I'd like constructive help as to how you think I can improve,  please send me constructive criticism", you'd circumvent alot of what's transpiring in terms of hard feelings...Instead what I envision is a person standing by a pit with a close fist.... and the category should read

"Critique me, IF you dare"

Essentially, People ALWAYS have the option of getting a critique just by asking for one.. assuming they have to expend more energy to ask, that means via PM, people would be identified, and there'd be an exchange between the two back and forth, which is how it should be IMHO...  Removing the Critique category doesn't preclude the chance of Critiquing still happening... People have ALWAYS had that option... Just don't make it quite so easy a category, that's inciting problems of the nature we see on and on and on, who benefits ?...

Amazingly when I first came on here and starting posting things I didn't know what the "rank" thing was at all and just selected it for ever so long! What a dewhead. What is odd is NO ONE ever critiqued me! Or if they did I didn't notice it...my sense is there is even a shyness about commenting on anyone wishing this option in their recording.  I go along with them, but there are some people who ask for these and DO get rather scurrulous about your comments--you just learn who those are.  One thing I do however, is when giving them a rating, I never say "I'm giving you a 7", I tell them I'm giving them a "Very Good" for their work (which is the correlating value for 7).

In my undying quest for honesty, I've even taken my present day profile picture of me down and put up a "baby picture" (sorry Steve, I cribbed this idea from yours) in the hopes some people are not just attracted to my singing for "other reasons" (there are always those).   This sounds immodest, but it's a known fact I look like Cary Grant so.....

On the upside, I brought my recording of "Oh Look at Me Now" in for my teacher to listen to and she was beaming--it is maybe the first time I was able to get away from the Sinatra-Rat Pack influence and make the song my own; heck even my voice sounds like me (?).  What's best is she told me she could "hear" things she has been teaching me.  That just made my day folks!

Michael,  What are the odd's realistically, of someone who's submitted 50 songs being a 9.87777773 ?  People in SS actually want to SAVE this is a testament for their great-grandchildren, and the first paragraph of their Obit..  THere's a problem with that...  They really want to display this next to their internet mail-order PHd

HEHE,  you can crib anything you want... Just don't crib the photo of me with Mr Octobers sisters.

It's NOT everyday I get "lucky" like this !

Image

I've heard that I was a "priceless" baby Michael... I don't usually post my baby picture, but what the heck.

Image

I suppose it's true that alot of our character traits are in fact genetic...

Visibly shudders.......

You know, I think I'm going to try an experiment professor. I will slap something up there within the next four days and ask for an honest assessment by all.  It will not be something I'm especially pleased with (I'm no fool!) but rather something I know has some moments of sloppiness about.  Just to see what happens.  Will keep you posted.

Steve I have to PM you about something in your punctuation that I've noticed--frankly I'm appalled coming from you! It's nothing really....promise not to use any numbering system....

<throwing forearm to brow.... OY>

Michael,  please feel free,  I'd appreciate it..  Really would, I have probs with my apostrophic stuff LOL

Thank you Michael,  Yes I do know that I'm VERY confused about where to put the apostrophe.... Please post that PM in the forum, and I'll post the response, just to show that critique, ISN'T the end of the world !

Michael, or anyone... when does the apostrophe come before the S  as in 's ?  and when does it follow, as in S' ?   I think I abuse it where there's no contraction too LOL

OK, I use that's as in "that is",  but why I use it in Like's is probably because I assumed that She like's, or He like's, is a function of HER preference, HIS preference, etc.. ... That is incorrect ?  He make's would be wrong too ?

Come to think of it, I also abuse quotation marks, don't I ?

Heheheheheh---sharpens the knife...well, what I made mention to Steve is that he often misuses the possessive apostrophe "S" in some of his feverish if finely wrought missives (e.g., want's, need's, et. al). As I mentioned to Steven my own mother taught English but I'm the last  one in the world to ask about the rules and forms of proper English so if someone of erudition in this field could give us both a quick run down on that subject without being too pedant it would be greatly appreciated.   As I pointed out to Steven, it only stuck out glaringly for me because he is a most articulate writer (this is no fluff) and towering individual that he is apparently knew immediately what I was referring before before even submitting my report in private.

Thank's!

Michael

and my response to michael naturally was

(^#&#  &#+*  %*#&(#  #&%)#++  and the f*#(  *#))#

Actually this was the response:

YES,  Thanks,  I do... and it's fine that you made mention of that in the forum, I appreciate it !! actually, in fact I've been meaning to ask about it in the forum !!!  I'm confused about that !

I'm trying to present myself somewhat correctly, but I have a LONG LONG way to go.  I'm finding that the longer we are out've school, the tougher it gets (HEHE, I caught myself,  I was about to put an apostrophe in get's) to recall basic's <--ooops,
of our language.

Yep, I would've HONESTLY put the apostrophe in get's and basic's... In fact I DID..

Thank you... This is a habit I must break..

So what's the worst thing that happens ?  I learn something, and improve.  The purpose of a critique is to help somebody improve, it should be understood that few of us are perfect, we will NEVER be perfect, and it shouldn't be necessary for the person offering us help to be perfect either. If people want constructive criticism, some of that inflated ego must be left behind prior to posting in "C"!

What, I gave you a "10" Steve! That's "Perfect"! Wattadamattawichu?! @(&*#*&!!!

Here's a site that lays it out rather easily, rather than me writing expansively on the topic and revealing how ignorant I really am about such things:

Michael,  This would actually be a pretty beneficial experiment.  Tell me when you are willing to do this, I'll discuss this with you in PM, I'll leave you a critique pending your approval, and will give a 6 or 7 rank as well assuming that's all I feel it's worth. However,  you'd really have to blow the composition for me to envision *YOU* only receiving a 6 rank.  Some of you folks that sub in SS, are in fact excellent singers.

I don't need a "10".  I just want to express my sorry a**' correctly LMAO

Is that correct, the apostrophe after my sorry a** ?  or shouldn't it be there at all LOL

Seriously, I do appreciate it, honestly !   This has been hanging me up for awhile.

Michael, when does the apostrophe come after the S ?  I thought it was when something belongs to someone, even assuming it's a trait they possess.

IE....  His condominiums'

OK, now I'm confused.  I honestly don't know when it's before or after the S

AH great,  you posted a link !  Let me hit that..

By the way, try not to use contractions when writing serious assignments. They are fine in creative writing but do not use them when doing official types of writing.

I was not aware of this either !

Quote:
This one is tricky, if in doubt, add apostrophe s :
James’s car, the princess’s dress

Is this a joke ?  LOL

You know what really rattles me is when see acronyms with the possessive apostrophe "S" following them like VCR's, UFO's, etc.  I just can't hep myself from going bonkers when I see that!

Yes, let's give this frolic a whirl (mad doctor experiment #32-0A).  Best to try something when I've been up a long, long, time or when I've just gotten out of the bed--I've got some other ideas  up my sleeve but will PM you.

Kind regards,

Dr. Victor Frankenklein

Michael,  would it be Steves' VCRs   or Steves VCRs' ?  It appears that only when the item is plural does the apostrophe come after the S.

Yeah,  I need to crash to, later Michael. Catch you tomorrow !

Come to think of it.  Would it be too ?  as in also ?

I make loads of mistakes.  These really need to start to end !

In general I have problems with punctuation.  I'm confused as to when a comma is actually necessary.  Also, as to when semi-colons should be used. What terms should or should not be hypenated, and I won't even mention my colon issues LMAO

Ohhhhhh, this thread is amazing -- priceless even

:(

Well you've convinced me... avatar is NOT ever coming down - sorry no pics

Dr. Steve, I now know that I will never be emotionlly secure enough to submit something to the SS... and I won't hang around just to post.

As for flying apostraphes... in an informal language setting? Guilty as most.
But, not paying my secretary overtime to edit my posts before submitting.

As for you BigDog the experience has been priceless -- one I will never forget
Just up the quality of the armor in those flack jackets you've been passing out.
The girl who was so happy about her new song didn't make through the newbie gauntlet and neither did I, but thanks for trying...

Bigdog.  Besides being "The best",  what is it that you do that impacts so many people ? (I'm not speaking of large intestine impactions this time either btw)
