Is it the amount of product or the quality? I need some suggestions, some examples of substantial material worthy of reading.

When I first came here I noticed that it seemed to be more important to have a lot of posts than to follow the rules. This part of the website is based on hits in the forum. They sell ads based on these hits.

If it is necessary to stifle ourselves the way some of the elders seem to believe, what will happen to this forum?

Is it the way the threads have changed to discussion? Is it because there are newbies here, like me, who have adapted to the way that this forum actually is going rather than to sit back and say "I would never do that." Is it really appropriate to come into a thread and inject the negativity that I have seen lately. This is another form of bullying. It's not enough to even get a warning for, but it is still bullying. Sure, they are bigger than I and tougher than I, more knowledgeable and even smarter than I am, but where is the fun.

Maybe karaoke isn't about fun at all. Maybe it's just about who can get away with the most.

Don't bother posting to this thread. It will be pulled as soon as it gets attention. Let's not talk about the elephant in the living-room. Let's just tolerate it until it gets to be too much.

Something else is that in some parts of this country the word that starts with cra and ends in p us considered as bad as a lot of the words that are not allowed in this forum. This alienates the people of that area. It's a lot like saying a word in a foreign language that is considered obscene to the natives of that language, but here it is OK.

Is this really the way it is? This is what we are to do?
Really?

My respect is waning for certain users.

I think this is an interesting thread actually, and here's why..  Last October, the room was pretty much at a near stand still..  While those complaining "Post quality not quantity, OR stay reserved, OR it's excessive chatter, and if I don't deem it feasible, it's ludicrous, etc", might've felt it appropriate, some others were also complaining "What happened to the good old days" ?  "Where is everybody these days" ?  "Why doesn't anybody chat in here anymore" etc..  Either way, some are happy, others aren't. From my perspective (which is ONLY that) a "General discussion forum" where "just about anything goes"... or "almost anything" within reason (which just means if others like the content it's OK assuming no one cringes) is for people to decide whether or not they want to yack, scoff, have fun, just read, ignore, etc... It's a totally subjective call.  If for the most part others are treated with respect, and included within the content of a conversation, Who really has the right to condescend based upon "their partiality towards you, or your content, thread heading, etc ?"

Some will like it, some won't, some think it's babyish, while the younger ones can identify and add 1000 posts, etc....  It's just OUR entertainment individually/ collectively, and if some people don't like it... it's often as much THEIR problem, as your own, or my own, this place IS to have fun in.. (even that is listed within the description), something like, "it's mandatory that you must have fun", forgot the verbatim post.... Who deem's that type of fun feasible ?  THat's entirely subjective.. We don't have to take votes prior to starting a thread...... Others also have the option of ignoring....  If it's substantial to you,  to you it's worth it, plain and simple.. If it's not outwardly offensive (which at times we've all crossed the line abit) why shouldn't it be acceptable in accordance to discussion room description ?  It doesn't need to be related to Karaoke in the :general discussion room:, even though it just about ALWAYS does get back on track at some point.... It's the members room to have civil dialogue in... Seems pretty simple IMHO... Noone's better than anyone else... If people want to gag the general discussion room,  might as well remove the "general discussion" room.. If people want to control the content, and censor that which they don't think is acceptable content (assuming they aren't room mods), and have the ability to remove those threads they similarly feel to be inanity, spamming, etc... Let them start their own bboard... My humor, is perceived as spam to many, however their feelings and beliefs regarding certain topics are often posts I similarly feel like saying  "You don''t believe in that crap, do you, take it elsewhere..It doesn't belong here"  it's all give and take.. I don't have the right to tell people that their content is stupid... If I do, "who am I to say?".  I'm here to have fun... not be perfect...

I totally forgot about the flame wars that I heard about from a time long past. I would have made my OP a little more PC in view of that.

Of Course I have the option to edit my post, but I think if I make a mistake it is more important to continuty to leave it as it stands rather than going back and fixing it before too many people see it.

Am I embarassed, no. My doctor said I really need to learn how to handle humilty and not be such a jerk all of the time. It's true, I was a big jerk until very recently. At least I am mature enough to make that change. It goes against my self respect to be rude to people when I know how to avoid it. Those little nicks that we leave in each others armor actually do add up. In the end I will be called on it. :D

Other forums have provided answers that I have needed without 40 dozen tunnel vision opinions, childish prejudices, snide remarks and guesses about something that I have 50 years professional experience in. :) And then get beligerent when I offer an idea or opinion that they dont believe in..

Our capacity to expand make a little money and remain pros has been steadily  stymied in the last few years by many factors. Yet any attempt to have a positive mature productive discussion here on any of them is totally impossible Posters are so wrapped up in self that they are killing the very thing they love. This forum kills karaoke ideas and hinders more than it promotes or helps it.

I have never seen a forum like this with the superior attitude shown towards newbies . This sort of thing totally killed a forum that I was a regular of. They join with a positive inquisitive attitude ask a few questions are chastised and you dont see them again.. There are some in here that I love and others that I wouldnt even let you sing at my shows if you came in with your attitude and bs.

Edit And I'll admit that I am just as guilty as anybody else at times

These are just a few general comments and are not to be taken personally by those on here with an enemic ego but are aimed at the real pros on here that understand constuctive criticism and would like to provide more or positive thoughts..

to be honest, you have a very good point, ATM.

I never heard that you needed to have a plethora of points, unless you're going to use the "shop" area... and you're right in that we old timers are going by the words of the "Webguru" and trying to stay on topic... we were at one time criticized for having too many off topic threads, storage space was at a minimum, etc. So they created special play areas where we could create topics, post posts, etc all that was so the general discussion area wouldn't be flooded with such off topic threads.

Things appear to have changed since that time, and I and others like me may have never fully adapted to the newer functions of this bboard.

I guess I'll wait until someone with authority really smakes something down before I criticize in the future. My dislike for a thread will no longer be a reason for speaking out...

I do want to add, that I try to be very careful in the Tech room, as well as Singer's Forum to adhere ONLY to thread related substance, and not go off on tangents. In turn, I feel it's important we respect the right's of others to have a tech room,  for us to also participate in Singer's forum, show at least an interest in Singing, or Karaoke related matter.  That's why we came here to begin with...  Otherwise there's AOL, Yahoo chat, MSN, IRC, etc..  I can understand people not wanting this site to turn into another "America Online Lobby chatroom". That's certainly a founded concern..  I made the mistake of carrying my blather into the tech room, even Singer's forum, and for that I apologise..  It's VERY important to me that technical people, and singers alike find a niche that makes this place worth their while, realistically, THOSE are the reasons I joined. General chatter although fun, can be found in many areas..  So balance I suppose is the key once again..

ADDED IN:

One other area, I've touched on this before..  I believe we are extremely fortuneate that administration AND the moderating team gives us the amount of freedom we have been given to pretty much "take care of ourselves in here", without taking an "iron handed" moderating approach.  While no venues (or very few in my own online experience) with general chat areas are ever really :true: democracies online, in the 1 1/2 years I've belonged to KS, this is the closest venue *I* have ever found (with an extremely large member base) which is ALMOST self moderating, and does OK without constant chastising, and suspensions.... The members here do a decent job, of helping see to it that things go OK for the vast majority.. This is a luxury that also should never be taken forgranted.. On the flipside of this it get's ugly. TOS wars, moderators not knowing what's what contextually since they really haven't the time to read everything, next selective censorship..  It's pretty ugly. I've left many rooms of that type

I should apologize. I know the rules, they are not different from any other forum that I know of.

I really should just move on to a forum where there is more to talk about so I can stay on topic. This is the first forum where I ever broke that and a few other rules. I let myself go and I only have myself to blame for that. Live and learn. I did make a fool out of myself.

Sorry for getting on a high-horse and whining about how I thought things should be.

There are rules. I should follow them. I can't follow them here. Sorry folks.

You guys have fun. I should go now.

Oh well, so much for trying to leave quickly. I need to go to the tech forum to find out how to delete my account. It's kind of funny.

Chuck, It's all the members general chat area in here, for people to "chat"..  You've done nothing at all wrong IMO..  We are chatting in a general discussion room.. I've screwed up by taking it where it certainly doesn't belong..

My feelings are that Topic related, Tech, Singer's, and even our spontaneous type general chatter can all coexist if WE ALL respect others space... But in general discussion areas, it's pretty much for people to get to know one-another and have fun... Noone's done anything wrong by chatting about what's on their mind in here (IMO)

Assuming in this particular "Open forum, discussion forum" we aren't supposed to stray beyond two generations from "Karaoke related subject matter", I, myself didn't know based upon numerous discussions with the powers that be, nor did I know based upon room content at any point during my own membership here, and even THEIR contribution to what would be considered OT content, assuming this were the case in "Open Forum, Discussion Forum"..

This is my understanding. Self descriptive.

I can't follow the rules but thanks Steve.

I do actually have self respect and it precludes me from staying bacause of the fact that this is a forum and not a chat room. I tried to chat in the chat room, very seldom did anybody ever show. I will go now. Rules where NOT actually made to be broken.

Thanks anyway Steve. :D

EDIT: How do I delete my account? I searched the threads and found five pages that had nothing in the titles about this. Next time I will make sure there is a way to delete before I join anything.

I suppose by that same token, I'm incapable of following rules as well.. But I'm still staying until I get my (@$%&#!) booted from this place LOL ..  All I'm trying to do is compromise.. I enjoy Singers forum, and Tech areas too much to quit... I'm just too self-centered I suppose   Some hate us,  some like us... What can we do ?  How can it be any other way ? Who's exempt ? Reason I joined is because I've worked with singers most of my life as a "backing" Musician, I like being around more mature individuals in a contemporary music setting.. It's what I've done.. Musician/accompanist.. instrumentalist, etc.. My interest in here is the Singers, there aren't other areas I found with this much variety, that are this interactive.

I respect that. I can't do that myself, I feel that I don't have a leg to stand on. I am new and should not argue against the way things should be.

I enjoy conversation, maybe a little too much. In person I am actually great to talk to. Even when I get stuck in a subject I know nothing about, I will at least respect what is being said.

You guys know this place better than I do. If this were a place where I could contribute and always stay on topic I would. I would be more than happy to follow the rules. In life, I follow rules better than anybody I have ever worked with, that's why they often end up working for me as I move up the ranks. I can't do that here.

People have made a place for themselves in this place. Who am I to say let's keep breaking the same rules that were being broken when I first got here. That doesn't seem as important as respectging the people who have a lot of time invested here.

I mean no disrespect to anyone. I just need to go. So Mybe I should at least shut up until I figure out how to delete my account. :)

Chuck,  As I've told you.  You don't have to vindicate a damn thing. Your content is AS substantial as anybody elses.  The time I worry is when I post a thread heading. and after two days, it slips off the front page with perhaps TWO posts, both MINE..

Well, that's actually a lie :) ..  Usually I'll post a third post to rejeuvenate it !

C'mon, don't make me get on my knee's,  I'm too fat and old for that... Plus my butt's stuck to the computer chair

Chuck, YOU SING !  You submit to the Singer's Showcase,  this is MORE your area in terms of how you utilize it, than my own !!!  If you contribute and get something out've the showcase, YOU BELONG here... If you are a tech... or singer, or contribute or just enjoy it in THIS area...You belong here...

All we owe others, is the same respect we wish to receive <belch>  sorry

ATM - What the heck happened for you to act this way? The discussion forum
is to talk about what ever you want. If you took that attitude into the tech forum and someone got mad, live and learn. It isn't that big of a deal. You are a well liked addition to the family. I'm not sure what happened, but you shouldn't leave.

I guess I just got paranoid, really paranoid. Didn't mean to make a big to do about it.  I won't be going anywhere. This was not meant to see what my popularity was like or anything along those lines. Just a major brain fart.

I guess Kappy was right about staying on topic. Maybe it's really not that important.

I owe Matt an apology. He's gonna hate this but I keep getting him confused with someone else.

Is there an emoticon for embarrassment?

No need to feel embarassed about anything either.  This is an artistic venue.  If people were expected to remain stable all the time, and never get emotional,  I'd have deleted my account within the first month of joining this place.  There are certain things that just are unacceptable to me. Leading that list of character defects, are people that have lives, don't need to take psychotropic meds.....ack..  I'll think of the other obnoxious & intolerable flaws later... If we get along with a couple of other folks in here,  than we belong.. It's THAT simple.. If one day we try to sign on, (are quite certain our membership name, and password were entered correctly), and after about 50 tries keep getting the same message " The User name or Password you entered is not recognized by the DATA base"..  One assumption might be we no longer belong.
