I have a bunch of the Shure older 565 SD's.   Not sure what they do, but they look close to a predecessor of the 58... Similar specs.... I can't tell a difference listening to them.... Not saying there isn't a big difference, I just can't tell in a lower volume head to head.... For some reason these sell today for more than the SM-58 (which is another mystery to me)... Not sure if it's that they are discont'd, or they were a better microphone for certain applications.... The innards alone cost 100 bucks assuming I want to replace them


Whether these are high-8 SM-58 type predecessor's I'm not certain...

Kelly,  those seem to have a decent angle for picking up sound... I wonder if they are great microphones for mic'ing a cabinet such as a guitar cabinet... Supposedly many guitarists claim the SM-57 is much better for amp mic'ing, and the SM-58 is really more of a vocal microphone... I've even heard claims that the SM-58 is essentially the SM-57 with the ball... I have no idea..... Seems that might be good for cabinet amplification.... I have a few beta-greens too... Thought I was getting a great purchase when I got them at a music store auction new at close-out of about 1/3 the retail price.... Turns out they ARE good microphones, however good for amplifying Tom Tom's on a trapset...

Her live in Paris dvd really is outstanding. I have a lot of her material and some I can take or leave but that concert was stunning. In answer to a previous query steven yes I know there are a numberof krall tracks on cdg. I even sing some. On Showcase I have done a krall track called maybe you'll be there. I do not have a krall sound at all but I love the track.

As to my earlier post. The Sure mics I have are: 518SA. Look like Sm58s. So far, I have no complaints with them. They WERE originally a couple hundred dollars each. So back then, they were considdered some of the best stage mics. My AKG D 880S is about $160.00 US. My others range from $70.00 down to $12.99. The DM 220B ($12.99 US) sounds as good as the Dixon MD 1178 ($69.99 US). It really is a try befor you buy item. I will not buy a mic now with out listening to it first. Both those mics are built about the same in quality and ruggedness. Fortunetly, those 2 mics came with the system I bought, so didn't really get ripped off. They were just thrown in. The Sures, I got on Ebay for $20.00 total. Came with another mic. An Electrehome condencer stick used to micing Saxes and such. Not enough low end for vocals. So, not at all a bad deal.. I also got 6 wireless with my PA system, thaT I dont use. They are crap. I only use wired on stage. IO have a sure wireless headset, but I need to get it fixed, and I'm scared of what that could cost as it is a $500,00 mic..

Now back to reality... Microphones are sort've like cymbals.  You don't just buy a name, or no-name brand... You try them first at the store....Each cymbal has it's own characteristics.... Some of the cheaper cymbals can sound quite good.. You just have to try them out, Listen for the sound you're looking for, and what cut's thru the mix....Personally, for Karaoke, given background tracks, bar noise.. How good a microphone does a person really need ?   How important is pristine vocal quality in a bar that has karaoke and background noise ?    Why even bother with anything more costly than a Shure PG series, or SM-48 ?  I don't understand.. Although on very quiet nights, ballad singers, or singer's singing slower type ballads I guess deserve a good microphone.  My question is how good do you need for live Karaoke applications in all seriousness ?  How much sensitivity do you really need ?  What becomes superfluous ?   I wouldn't think this is necessarily quite so subjective.  

Incidently,  this is assuming you are that particular.. On average most Shure SM-58's can safely be mail-ordered without regret regarding product that arrives..  It's just a safe bet in terms of buying mail-order... I guess if a person is particular, and wants to hear a combination microphone, setup that compliments their vocal qualities, they'd really need to borrow a few microphones, take them home, even take them to work, and see how these work in their typical setup... So many factors... Microphone is only the beginning of a chain of equipment that will eventually get heard by listeners.... Sort've like a turntable.. or cassette player... Why spend 400 on a cassette player, if you are going thru a junky receiver, and have lousy speakers ?  Alot of factors .

I'm still smiling about this however.... I need to hit the showcase, I need to listen to a few songs I've been wanting to listen too..Just been so antsy lately.... I'm curious to hear Morgan do a few of these jazz standards.  Not easy songs to do.

I am a selfish witch Steven. I dont do Karaoke. A number of my gigs are ambient background music in restaurants where I want a mic that will perform well at low levels

I Use -4- different Wired microphones. Sennheiser E-835-Very Good , Shure-SM-58 Which seems very (colored) but strong Midrange,  Shure PG-58 Great Budget Microphone Very similar to SM-58,but about 40 dollars cheaper. My favorite personal mic is the Audix OM-2, which has a Beautiful Smooth Midrange and Great Feedback Rejection.

When you say decent, are you talking about over all usage or is it for a specific purpose?   IT MATTERS.  Anyone that says different doesn't know anything.   There are many different microphones for different applications and sound very different.

Most of the major radio personalites use one mike for their entire career.  It's the way they want their voice to sound.   It has to do with the tonal qualities.   My voice sounds the best with my favorite mike.  I don't like how it sounds with others of the same price.   A blanket answer is not what you are looking for.  You need to get specific, as to the use and what your sound will be like.   Go to music stores and sing or talk into different mikes.  Try them out, it's the only way to truely know.   Price range matters.    Cheap is cheap.   Quality you must pay for.    LMAO
