Is it too late to rename the post?   LMAO

Yes Jian, like a million dollars.   :D

This post has generated a gang attack on me.    Pretty hot topic.   :O

My main reason to go to any show would be

1. To know that I will, without a doubt sound good.   That includes knowing how to use all of the equipment.

2. That I will be treated as everyone else, there spending money.   As far as the rotation.

3.  Selection would not be a major factor, unless it was very small and lopsided towards a certain type of music.

4.  I am not a big fan of getting on a stage.

5.  I want to hear continuous karaoke music, with no filler.

6.  I do not want to hear a KJ that thinks he's a radio personality and has to talk more than he needs to.

7.  Getting to sing a lot would be a plus, but not everything.

8. A safe place, with no A**HOLES over running the bar.

9.  Open kitchen.    Good food and menu.   Decent prices for the food and drinks.

10. A place to sit, for the entire night.

Would it be fair to say that a KJ should sing as little as possible, but as much as necessary?

Discuss ...

Yes, but that doesn't take away the fact that I actually like to sing.   I want to have fun, while I work.   It doesn't mean I sing all night long.   I'm only there 4 hours.

Ah, good then, I will go visit you this year end to sing. It will cost me a ton of money to go to the US. The only problem is I need to locate you.

I sing first song and last song always. And any time inbetween that I need to fill a gap or wake people up, and any time I am requested to. And I do get a quite a few requests. I give what the majority want. Even when my show is geared to the younger school kids, I end up singing a fair amount. Taking over a song when the singer chickens out, singing the second part of duets, singing with to help the singer get into the song, singing with to help a singer with stage fright...... I do that with adult shows also, just not needed as much.

Most bar patrons don't really care what the entertainment is, as long as it is entertaining. It is our job as the host, to keep it entertaining. Regardless of how you do it. Playing music, singing, telling jokes, chasing the strippers around the stage.. ( oh wait, the judge said I wasn't supposed to talk about that ). But anyways, That's what we are there for. Otherwise, there are pplenty of automated Karaoke systems that bars can and do use. But the entertainment value..?? Well...... You get what you pay for..

I totally agree with just about every single thing here. #5 is the only one that I don't completely agree with because of where we do our shows. The shows we do are sometimes in casinos. People come to sing and sometimes to sing and gamble. Sometimes they are at a machine and it takes them a little longer to get to the stage so if we didn't have "filler" music then we would have to learn a million jokes or have major dead air. We use that time to talk about promos, the bar and wait staff etc... but sometimes you just gotta play something. My husband throws in tv tunes and fun stuff and the crowd loves it. We do drawings for singers. We also do drawings for non-singers as well on one of the nights. It keeps everyone there and it has already proven profitable for not only the casino/bar but for us as well. Many KJs in Vegas promote the "TIP JAR". We do not but many nights walk away with over $100 in tips. It is kinda cool but never, ever expected. Again, it is Vegas.
When it comes to songs selection...we have over 48,000 karaoke titles and growing. I think we have everything from the 50's to today.
Can't everyone just get along!!! LOL
Have a great weekend Big Dog!

Thanks, but your job is very non typical.    Totally different situation than a regular bar gig.    How do you deal with the crowd noise level?  I'll "bet" no pun intened, that it is pretty loud.   Just the swearing, from not hitting on the slots...  LMAO

No pun taken...lol
Surprisingly no.  Many times as I am walking around the place (my hubby does the sound and I work the crowd) most people seem to be playing their machines with the music. They get a beat going with their machine and bop right along with it. Many people, including myself yell at a loosing machine under their breath. It is the table games where it can get loud. Where we are there are only slots. So, far since we have been doing shows in the Vegas area the only noise issuses we have had to deal with is laughter, clapping and whistling. Which hopefully is what should happen at a fun, night out after a long nasty work work or even a great work week of people just trying to find a place to relax and have some fun. This is the main reason I do what I do. To watch others have a great time and in turn have one as well. Life is too short for all the bull poop. Believe me we learned that a year 1/2 ago when we lost our 16 year old daughter. If just 1 dang person has a great night because we were there to help them do that, then in my mind, my job is done!!!!
Peace!
Lynette

lostinvegas,

I agree, there is no greater rush than someone having a good time and having something to do with it!  This can also be accomplished by singers and non-singers as well.  We had a non-singer last night with a great attitude and wonderful comments - it made singing a song much more enjoyable!  As a matter of fact his 3 other friends were all very complimentary and not a single one sang!  He was with a woman (non-singer) who had celebrated her birthday with us and had fun and decided to come back...

I know of KJ's who use filler music that aren't in casinos and it works well for them.  The logic behind your filler music is great!  If I go to Vegas again I will definitely look you up, I like your attitude!

Susie :)

Younger crowds require filler music with a heavy bass and constant noise. Older crowds (I have done a few 50th anniversarys) demand less volume and breaks in between so they can talk to each other.  I have done parties that the only time music was played or somebody sang was when it was requested.

Interesting...we use filler music between each and every singer. Less volume of course, and sometimes you only play a few bars of the song, but it beats dead air.

We used to signal the end/beginning of a round with a dance song (I still cannot listen to The Macarena because I heard it too many times back then) and then the KJ would sing. If a round was too long (like 50 singers) we would play a dance song at about the halfway mark too, to keep the natives from getting restless.
