Colorados clean air nonsmoking went into effect 1 July. One of our karaoke bars will close the end of this month. They blamed it on a rent increase.

When singing I like a big energetic crowd Now half of them are outside smoking. And some singers are called it takes forever for them to get there.. know why?   I know.. lets make some more rules.

I wonder how many states don't have the indoor clean-air act yet.  I also wonder how long before they outlaw the sale of alcohol... Of course that would mean too much loss in tax money to the gov't, so that'd never happen... So much hypocrisy.

I'm not sure what it's called here but there is NO SMOKING in restaurants, unless, I guess, you have seperaate areas.  We do the karaoke at a national chain that declared themself a bar (which is the only way to be able to smoke in any area) and now they can't have anyone in the place under 21... I'm not sure what this has done to the business but you can still get their full menu...

Previously, anyone under 18 could be in the "bar" and sing karaoke until 10:00 as long as their group had some sort of food purchase.... When we finally get some people wanting to do that, it's too late, now, no under 21, period.

Susie :)

Personally I can't wait until they ban smoking over here. There is nothing worse than coming home smelling like you've been sat in an ash tray all night. If I had the slightest interest in karaoke I would much prefer to attend a smokeless one and there must be plenty more like me but with an interest in karaoke...or do you all smoke?

the whole "no smoking area" is just a facade as most places don't have sufficient, if any ventilation!

As for alcohol well I'm not against it provided people don't use it in a way that adversly affects others....larger louts,  football fans (bit of a generalisation but you get what I mean) and the likes....

we do not have a smoking ban yet in our state but, one of the bars I have been at for 3 years just sold after 43 years with the same owner. The new owner is under 40 and the first thing that he did when he took over is to change to Non Smoking.

At first I was concerned about how the business would survive...and for the first week or two it was dead as a door nail, but then each week the till began to grow and now after just a month we are doing more business than we did before and we have a much younger crowd that is higher energy, spends more money on the top shelf booze, and they tip better. My regulars that smoke are back and they are dealing quite well with the change for now but winter may change that.

I'm really happy about the change as I'm a non-smoker and I come home with clothes that smell normal, and a clear set of lungs. I don't get nearly as tired as I use to after working all day and then working till closing at night.

So far so good! :oh yeah:

I havnt smoked for years and prefer non-smoking. I worked on jukeboxes for awhile and what nicotene stain does is real detrimental esp to cd optics. You have to be real gentle when cleaning esp with a karaoke player and the film on the eye caused from nicotene is hard to get off.. Anything that generates heat has a current flow through it which sucks smoke more than anything else.. You think clothes smell bad open a jukebox that hasnt been serviced in 6 months or so and stick your head in....It takes a day to clean a jukebox when shopping it out both from nic stains inside and out...

Oh this scares me - I was told it will be soon that we'll find out, in the bar I work, what decision our suburb has made about smoking.
I live in a neighboring suburb to where I work karaoke ( it is less than a mile away though). From what I am to understand each suburb is to make the decision, if they don't they'll have to follow the counties decision on what to do about smoking. Now the suburb I live in has decided no smoking in bars period. If it is a restaurant /bar you can smoke in designated areas. I have the feeling a lot of bars will start claiming they are a restaurant. LMAO

This is good to hear Flipper!  I think a no-smoking ban is for the best in the long run.  It'll take time for everybody to adjust of course.

we have a smoking ban in mrestaurants unless they have a separate area with a separate hvac system. i have seen a couple that do not appear to comply, but...whatever. our bars allow smoking still.

it is good to know that it doesn't always kill a crowd to ban smoking.
