and if he doesn't even uncompress the file then I guess that is BEST for HIM and I will sleep easier knowing the pinnacle of "best" has been reached and the journey is over for the rest of us... I guess if he wanted the most perfect, and best, cd quality sound, he would use actual cd's... just a thought...

128 is ok you can hear some high end wavering - but not bad, I won't rip at anything under 192 but average at 256 or higher.

Let's  say that I record a song on to the hard drive with my computer.   Would I be able to find the file and click properties to see what it was done at?

Of course. goto the ID tag. I don't even have to right click, I just place the cursor over the file icon it will show a window that display the taged porpeties of the song. But you need to instal an audio ID tag reader program to do that.

Play it with winamp it will tell you the rate..

With a system that has proper (& correct amount) fx applied and using audio procs, the difference in rate is hard to detect.  When the bar is rocking with  a disco volume and acoustics are prevelant along with crowd noise it is virtually impossible to tell the difference...

depends on your os...

I know with windowsxp, and 2000pro, if you hold the mouse over any file, a small popup will come up and tell you the properties of the file, including the size it was created at. I had some downloaded files and did that to see what the difference was.
