If you own a disc that gets ruined and won't play and you can not buy another one because it's out of print. If you down load that disc or group of songs, is it legal? You can prove you have the original. Even though it doesn't play. And would this apply to other ruined discs or songs, you already legally own?

Technically no it's not legal, but will you get popped for doing it since you do own the original? Probably not.

Why do you want to download; you get a 128bit file. Get somebody you know that have a copy to copy one for you. There is format shift. Legal? maybe not, but I will not go to hell for doing it.

There would be no way of knowing if you copied it before or after it became non playable.

The 128 bit file. Does that mean it doesn't have the complete information? Like it may have some missing frequencies or information. How big would the correct version be or isn't that possible?

Those are small files that can be easily sent via the net. You want something like 320bit for a good system like yours.

a 5 min song on disc is about 50mb, but a 128bit mp3 of the same song is about 5mb

wav to mp3 encoder ie, Lame for normal songs. For cd+g files use any of the cdg ripping program.

A file ripped from the CD is 40-60MB in BIN format.
Converting the BIN to a zipped mp3+g compresses that to a file 4-6MB in size. Typically these are ripped at 128K if you download them from Mirc or other online sources.
Of course both of those are ballpark figures and depend on the length of the original song on CD. If the ripper you use allows you to select the bit rate then you should try playing with those settings and determine at what rate sounds best to you when you play it back as a digital file. If you use a larger rate when you rip then the file will be bigger in size but not astronomically bigger. It all depends on your hard drive space and the sound quality that is acceptable to you when comparing the quality of sound between the different rates. For most people, in a bar environment, can live with sound quality of a 128K rate. Others will use highly sensitive testing software and equipment to prove that 128K sucks in the sound frequencies that only dogs, bats and people playing D & D can hear. It all comes down to the quality threshold that you can live with when it comes to what rate the mp3 portion is ripped at...

I can live with 128K unless I am planning on recording a demo to send off to a record company or if I planned on burning recordings to CD and using them as gifts (or a personal assault on an enemy's ears) or some other use that would dictate a cleaner and fuller digital music track... some people can tell the difference in a bar but, for the average non-anal audiophile, it is more than adequate of a rate to get the job done- it is really a personal preference on your part... I have been running karaoke shows from a PC since 2000-2001 and running digital DJ shows from PC since 1996-97 and I have yet to have a single person approach me at either show and complain about the 128K music track... is there a difference??? quick answer is yes. long answer is that, other than a handful of KJ/DJ's who even know what ripping rates is all about, most people in a venue don't care if it is ripped at 128K or higher as long as it doesn't make their ears bleed, sound like a scratched phonograph from the 1920's or like an AM radio station... above and beyond that, with the price of large capacity hard drives so cheap, knock yourself out ripping everything at a higher rate if that is your personal preference.... easy way to test if ya like it or not is to rip the same song at 5-6 different rates and then listen to each completely from the lowest rate to the highest rate ripped... gradually you may hear differences in quality... then listen to the 128K rip all the way through and then go directly to the highest rate ripped file so you can immediately hear the quality gap between them... pick a rate ya can live with and go for it... what is acceptable to one KJ may be garbage to another... just takes a little testing and comparing to find out where your tastes fall in that spectrum...

With a 600 dollar mic and top of the line PA he need at lest 192kbit and should go for 320k. HD is cheap. Why go for less.

my advice stands no matter what equipment he is using... he needs to methodically listen to a single song ripped at the various rates so he can EXPERIENCE the difference and then make an informed decision on which rate meets HIS standards. I have seen KJ's make a 600 dollar mic and top of the line PA sound like crap using the original CD and i have seen some KJ's make a tin box and AM radio sound like a million dollars... the difference, is the guy behind the controls and inbetween the speakers and only he can say what meets his level of quality that will work well with his needs/wants. He may like 128K on his 600 dollar mic and top of the line PA or he may decide 192 is of high enough quality to suit his needs and he might even decide that 320 is the bar of quality he wants to achieve... the point is, that no matter what you or I THINK he should go with, it is the experience of him listening ot the different ripped rates (on his top of the line PA) and what HE is willing ot accept as "OK". I personally could care less if he ripped them all to 8-track tape or had them pressed onto vinyl if that is what works for HIM...

what part of "he decides what is best" is not making it through the translation??? it doesn't matter what you, I or any one else thinks is "the best" when it is a decision only he can make after weighing the data from his own experiments and testing of the different rates... he has gotten input from several people.. he is a smart guy and can probably figure it out from the great advice he has gotten from different people... what is "best" to you may not be "best" for him... or me... or that guy over there... or the guy down the street... or... you get the idea... I hope... "Top quality" and "the best" are in the ear of the beholder... let him come to his own conclusion... whatever he chooses is no skin off my teeth but I am glad that whatever he chooses works best for him...
