One of these days I'll have to tell you about a few of the women I've had to place restraining orders on. I don't mention names, because people would think I'm making this up.. I can't figure out how they got into my bedroom, I could've sworn I locked the door's and windows.

Just ONE damn morning,  I want to wake up without some supermodel grabbing at me..  It's tough on my identity,  I never get any space or quiet time just for me. Whether it's Linda Evans, Bo Derrick, Cheryl Tiegs, Jaqueline Smith...there's just no novelty, or anything to fantasize about anymore.. It's not healthy for a guy's sex drive, when before he has a chance to fantasize about anything, some blond is waking you up whispering, "Steve, can you move over, I want to get under the blanket too".  As if that's not bad enough,  can you imagine waking up to a catfight ?  Who get's accused ?  ME...  You think I want three girls in my bed at the same time ?  Heck, I don't even want one... All I want is TO BE LEFT ALONE  FOR A CHANGE !!!

Bab's.  I think this is the significant risk... You end up getting turned in by your employer... because at one point,  he really has no choice... How can a bar that provides entertainment get away with never declaring it over the long haul ?

This of course is not legal. Do bars do it yes. Bars have all sorts of entertainment  and entertainment expenses. They can shuffle around what they pay out in cash and call it different things.

Quote:
But is that collective sum of all worked nights or per night basis?  Most shows you work 4-5 nights alone can be $600+.

You are correct in that it is a total sum for the year, but if you are doing private parties or one time gigs for any one person and it is less than $600 they do not have to issue you a 1099. As an independent contractor each job you do is seperate, just as if you were a plumber or carpenter.

Quote:
We are really contract help nothing more nothing less - not employees.  The 1099 they give at the end of the year is just a copy of what they file to the IRS.  But in so doing they need our business ID or SSN (if a dba) since they have to prove who they paid to in case they get audited.
This isn't anything new.

All a business needs to issue a 1099 is a SSN or a bus. EIN number, true. You can actually give an incorporated business a 1099, but most businesses don't want one. Usually one of the main reasons they incorporated in the first place was to avoid taxes that coincide with 1099s.

Quote:
I notice where a lot of people refer to bars and clubs as employers.  They are not.  They are your clients or your company's client.  You are a business, not an employee unless you applied to work there as an employee and as such the bars have no business giving you a 1099 or whatever it is.  Do you give your dentist, doctor, insurance agent, etc these forms.  No because you are their clients, the club is your client.

If you receive a 1099 you are an idependent contractor. This means you are hired out by other companies or individuals to do work for them. This can be for any type of job, secretary, retail clerk,  etc... It is a fine line between employer and business. Avon, tupperware businesses receive a 1099. Realestate people get a 1099. The fact of the matter is they get paid by another company to do business. They aren't creating their revenue from individuals, but other businesses. They actually are your employer although you are an individual who operates by yourself.

EMPLOYEE- a person hired by another for wages or salary

EMPLOYER- a person who hires others for wages or salary

Quote:
You need a tax ID # if you are a retail outlet and you buy wholesale.    You pay no sales tax on the stock you buy at wholesale.  The tax number is so they get paid their tax, when you sell the items at retail.  You won't pay double taxes.    If you have employees then you need to pay other stuff, by law.   Like workmans comp. And you have to deduct  S.S. local tax, state tax, federal tax, unempolyment compensation, privilage tax.

This is when most people become a corporation. Your best option tax wise and to protect your personal assets is to become an S-corp. Are you a business -yes. But
you still have people paying you wages, so they are your employer. This doesn't take away in any way that you are a business and opperate as such. They can hire you and fire you, this also is a reason I believe they are my employer.

hello

i just want to say an interesting place here. a kj ffriend says i should come here and check it out the place. please excuse my two finger typing and spelling. computers are still new to me. ive been running karaoke shows on-off for about 5 years now.a lot of interesting talk going on. ive been reading the different topics for about a week now and i've learned quite a bit already. reading this topic about how other kjs get paid and paid their taxes has been good stuff. its really strange how this topic started as one thing and now your talking about something else. i see that bigdog can really get the talk going.  i think i might knoww who he is.

bye pghpat

Had you been considered a real employee, you would receive a W-2, from the employer.

Anyone can issue a 1099 if you are a business, doesn't have to be corporation.   This is to designate that you were hired as an Independant Contractor and you are not a full time employee.    This also indicates that the employer did not take out all of the required deductions including withholding tax.   These become the responsibility of the receiver of the 1099.

If you or anyone else (including the bar owner) gets audited and they find anything they think is not as it should be, they will require proof of all the questionable items.    If they suspect fraud, then the proof is more important.   If they are in a situation that requires them to rat you out, you're going to be drug into the investigation.   Many people have been audited, because they were caught up in someone elses income tax deductions.    This is where you will need to have all of your receipts and 1099s and anything else to clear you.      Since all of us are Independant Contractors, we will be a more visable target, from the I.R.S.

The businesses who are operating illegally take the chance of getting caught. They are just trying to fly under the radar. They know the IRS doesn't have time to sift through 1000s of receipts to make sure they match up.
You would have to be doing something that put out a giant red flag for them to have to go that indept.

Re: Karaoke Insurance?
Nothing was ever said but the next day I called my guy.    Erie Insurance.

He has made reference to Erie Insurance at least twice here on the boards. They are in 11 states: IL, IN, MD/DC area, NC, NY, OH, PA, TN, VA, WI, and WV.

That rules out the west coast and the deep south where Bigdog is located.

:D

thats jnust one bit, but when i read all the bits toegether from all opther messages, thinsgs added up to something, but itsnot like i was trying to find out who bigdog is.,it just sorta happened. but he says hes not from pittsburgh. but since bigdog decribed his gear in detail, it should be pretty easy to go to a show the guy im thinking of and see if his gear matches bigdogs.

Would be interesting to know still.  I know he claims not to have a website, but am still willing to bet that he advertises somewhere.

http://www.sing4bigdog.com/  located in Erie, PA.  Would say this could be it, but the equipment he describes here don't coincide with the pics of speakers that are being used & they claim 70K songs, he's admitted to about 9K.

http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community ... 297985&ck=  located in Brooksville, FL.  Advertises 17K songs.

Found an out of commission website in Rochester, New York  http://www.djbigdog.com/

http://www.bigdogrocks.com/ Fayetteville, AR  little off of the "right" coast.

This is kinda fun....... Solving The Bigdog Mystery LOL!

Still have some energy left after the show tonight.... so I nosed around. There seems to be a quote from him in an April post about having a "full time union steel mill job"! Wasn't sure if it was past or present tense, but it MIGHT narrow down the locations. Luckily the topic is "Locked", so he can't change the info! LMAO

Looks like he's on Central Standard Time, but that could be a misdirection ploy :). Not sure if there any steel mills in that time zone, but hey, it could be a fun search!

The quest continues...........
