Jian how does this compare to China Japan or others over there? Also what is your opinion of China and their attempts to totally regulate karaoke?

Japan is an advance country and is not much different as compare to the West. Their karaoke outlet may be different; ie karaoke cubical and the use of midi mic.

China is a different ball game. EVERYTHING is controlled by the gov't. It suck, but thats how things are there. I have never been there, but I have been to HK. Name any good Brand and you can be sure the Chinese have the Chinese version of it. I have an sm 58 from china.
My feeling is a big chuck of karaoke outlets in China do not borther to pay royalities.

I would be willing to bet that this bar did not pay their ASCAP/BMI fees and ticked someone off in the process.

The fees here run between $400 and $700 per year for the bar. Once they are compliant your good to go.

Every bar I do business with is compliant with them. It's really stupid for the bar owners not to.

SOCAN is pretty cool to deal with. You pat them and they pay whoever holds the licence for that song. Doesn't matter what company or country they are in.

US congress is looking at having a similar set up. But this is all mixed in with so many other things on the same set of bills, that it cvould be a while. This was actually something I heard on a news cast about 2 months ago. The conversation started around royalty fees on ALL media reproduction equipment, in Canada. It is on all blank media and media printing equipment. (And this is where the news cast was headed) Unfortuatly, that does not licence that copied media for public preformance. Thats a whole other fee..and on they went about it all being TALKED about and adding more thoughts to the set of bills that are being sent to congress to cover the whole shabang. lol

There have been a few bars hit in canada also. But here, they are also trying to go after the KJ if the bar has not paid the fee. The courts have the right to go after the music proivider. Meaning, DJ or KJ or Band. As KJs and DJs use recorded media, they are also liable for the fees if the bar doesnt pay. Till now, they have very seldom used that, but have started taking the stand that, ultimately, it's the music provider that is responsable.

Guess we will just have to wait and see how those court cases go for now..

I agree with the approximately $5 per show figure.    If your bar has to pay it and you still want the job give them the $5.   You can deduct it on your income tax.

I also emailed the paper requesting followups and even invited the reporter to join KS and keep us informed I dont thnk they realise the national interest or even worldwide interest this case generates.

It says that they had notices before, they ignored them.   So they were made an example to everyone else.  Pay up or die.    We'll kill your business.

Someone has to be the example, may as well be someone that was warned first & didn't pay.

I'm going to also look at the public records, and the NY State Judicial area's in that County of NY....   I'm curious what else they are, or aren't doing.  They might've gotten raided for other activity, for all we know... Syracuse is a huge college area, perhaps they were busted for serving minors too... SOmething likely made them this visible first, besides this copyright stuff..  Didn't a bar in Fairfield Cnty Connecticut also recently get busted for this type thing ?  I recall JamKaraoke posted something about a bar in Southern Ct area not too long ago..
