What I am trying to do is buy equipment that can do both karaoke and decent sound production.
Ultimately, I will need a demo. I have a leed on that but it must happen later. I hope to eventually hire a sound engineer if I can guarantee enough work to support this.
What I already have:
*Alesis MultiMix8USB, 8 channel mixer
*not too fancy sound card that is built into the motherboard of my PC.
I have on order
*SM58 mic
I'm sure that this will take more 'splainin' to make sense of what I need to achieve. I will do that as the questions come up becasue I don't know what to start with aside from the hardware I mentioned.

As far as computer software I grew up on Cakewalk Here is a cakewalk search on ebay You can get home studio for $30 -$40 but the I did notice some Sonar3 (pro version) well worth the price. I didnt know they had cakewalk dresses With this software you can make some real decent productions. Track Mix Master.....

The teacher of my voice acting class actually recomended using Audacity.
I will definitely keep Cakewalk in mind since it seems a viable alternative. Also I received Cubase LE with my mixer. I have to give that a try too.

I would get a better mic more geared for recording. They do cost a little more, but make a huge difference in vocal clarity.
Yeah I don't normally recommend them & I have never heard this mic, but the Behringer B-2 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=270491 has got some great reviews (from the linked site). Now couple that with a small ART Tube MP pre-amp http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=180643
Now you are talking some clean/warm vocals. No grant you, the mic isn't karaoke friendly, but then just keep the 58 :D for that!

That is what I was hopng for. I like the specs on the mic and preamp there. I didn't know I could get that kind of quality on such a budget.
This is very good to know.

That's a good price for the Art tube preamp.. After looking at the MF UA pages, those are out've my $$$ range.

I'm gettin' reallly good help already. It looks very hopeful. I can verify a lot of this with local people too. Here is a sample of the kind of work available to me. They usually don't need this much quality but it makes a good example. Quote: Looking for a demo---natural sounding testimonial. Job pays $blank for 2 lines. This is going to be used for a radio comercial on a small market. Please provide your sample as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for your submission.
Most of these jobs offer a few more minutes worth of work. What they are paying for is natural ability, training, sound quality, and marketability. They offer pay that i8s pretty close to union scale.

The companies also save money by hiring people with versatile ranges so it is cheaper for them to pay one person to do 2 or 3 voices than it is to pay 2 or 3 actors.
I'm no Mel Blanc or Daws Butler, but I do have a better range than anyone I was in class with.

I was CE at a small tv station for awhile and like all small stations you get involved in production etc... One year we were doing 5 sec one liner Christmas greetings. I did one and the guy called up right away and said get somebody besides that cowboy to do mine.

There are ways for me to get some experience from this type of setting. I am still connected to a couple of theaters and there are companies that do local voice acting that are not willing to pay union scale. This is a right to work state but I still think I have a chance at getting into this industry.

Yea with the qualty of video cameras now and some imagination It would be something you might "ease into" very easlily.... Production in any form is challenging and fun.
Another idea is call up a few stations in your area and ask if the chief engineer is busy or could you make an appointment with him....Most will give you a tour of their equipt and you can also counsult with the production mgr. Morning is best for initial contact They are busy getting the local stuff together later in the aft...

I have to concur. Excellent choice on a budget, and pretty much what I would have said, had I seen it first.

From what I hear they will help a person out with copy they are done with as long as the names are chaged in the script before recording.

Hey Danny, glad you could make it. we need to get your picture up here so people know you're a real person. I can reduce the image size for you if you don't have the software.

Going non-pc based is an option. have a look at some of the digital multitrack recorder. very easy to use. Here is an example.

Can someone suggest a decent DI compression box for recording bass guitar frequency, even something with multiple features ? Under 100 please.

Jian, I have a zoom 2020 multifx processor.... Can I use that ? Quite honestly I don't like the unit...It's very dry sounding to me, of course it MIGHT be perfect for going direct in such a case ! For live applications the mod's are so sterile, and dry sounding to me, I hate them... I like wet phase/flange and stomp type mods.... Can I use the Zoom 2020 multiFX processor for going direct into a mixer for compression ?

Jian, I'm looking at a few of these Tube MP studio V3 preamps... Musicians friend has them... PRices are about the same as the Art unit Lonnie mentioned.. Do these things have compression capabilities ?
