Sorry Bigdog but I really think this one needed it's own thread...

I like Cash....I have one place that pays by check and I had to wait 6 weeks for my first one...but since then They are Check as I leave...it's a nursing home so I gave them a break....after I asked the woman that hired me.
" who Dose the Payroll? someone in the alzhimers wing?" she has a check each time now 
Everyone else pays Cash.

I prefer cash and that's usually the way it is. We play some places where they insist on giving us a check but they will cash it for us before we leave.
On Saturday we're playing a county fair. They insist on a check.
We don't have the luxury of being to insistant on this issue. The owners have the power to hire us or someone else and there is plenty of competition. So far we haven't gotten stuck.
One thing we do insist on and that's when we do private parties. We insist on cash. Even then at the end of the night and they say, "Oh, gee I forgot, your'e going to have to take a check" what are you going to do. You can't take back your performance.

I prefer cash, but it doesn't really matter to me either way. If I'm paid cash I have to go to the bank anyway and deposit some of it to pay bills. If I get a check, I go to the bank and take out some of it in cash.
Ive had two bars that insisted on paying me in checks for bookkeeping/tax purposes and one that paid cash, but wanted a receipt for the same reason, but most here pay cash. Either way as long as they pay me that night, it's good. If I don't get paid, I don't do another show until I do get paid. That only happened once in 7 years.

I had a guy call me, to book a private party at his house, 20 miles away. He called from the phone book ad. He wanted a contract and to pay me a down payment. I said I didn't need it and I don't use a contract. He said how do I know you will show up? I said how do I know you'll pay me, when I'm done? He said good point. I did the party and he paid, cash.

Some of the places in hartford I used to play at, if I walked out of a bar with $200 cash, I'd get followed and jumped... Yet under normal more healthy circumstances, I'd opt for cash...

I like to get it home and throw it on the bed and roll around in it. LMAO Makes my day.  Can't roll around on a check, it kills the mood. 
I keep piles of money laying on the livingroom floor. I stubbed my toe the other day.
Can't stub your toe on a pile of check.

When I do weddings and private parties, I insist that the performance be paid for a week in advance or else I don't show up. That way if the check bounces, I haven't given them a show for free since, as Larry points out, you can't take your show back.
Also, all my regular shows have it written into the contract that if a check bounces I will automatically charge a $50 handling fee and will prosecute to the full extent of the law. Here in Wisconsin it's twice the value of the check plus bank fees.
Finally, I also have a clause in my contract that if shows (regular bar/club shows, not private functions) are not paid for on or before the night of the show, there is a $50 late fee for making me chase my money.

Yep, It get's annoying... Seem's no matter where I walk. It's either falling from tree's messing up my hair, or piles of it trip me... I guess we all have our probs though.. I'd cry about it, but who's listening ?

Yeah, I used to drink alot of chickens and pigs too... mixing those two really made me sick. How many pigs straight up can you polish off a night ?

I have found that MOST venues like to pay cash, as they can write it off as incidental expences. Tax man looks at cash paid out like petty cash. But even a small cheque paid out is treated as regular expences. That means it is not as easily tax deductable. And that way, you get cash and some don't claim every dollar they make, and the club usually gets a discount for paying in cash. As I am just getting back into music, I'm not sure if this has changed much, but so far, it looks like it still works that way.

Most of the bars I have done are cash payers, some have prefered to write checks. All of them 1099 me at the end of the year.
I don't mind checks from the bars as long as I get one at the end of the night or if it is a weekend gig, they have one ready at closing on Saturday. Never once had one bounce in 8yrs. Lucky I guess 
I take both cash and checks. However on private parties or weddings where I do not know the people all that well I ask for cash or cashiers check only and provide them with a reciept. I ask for the money to be presented just before the event starts. If that is difficult then I require it the day before the event. No dough....No Show
I have never had a written contract....probably should but never have been burnt yet!

Cashier's check, or cash makes alot of sense to me Flipper. When you think of it, assuming you do have a written contract, small claims still costs money, is a headache, and nobody ends up in jail for defaulting on a small claims judgement. Problem is, it's not always easy to collect, and getting your atty fee's or expenses recovered is a whole different difficult issues. It's just not worth the headache for that sum IMHO....
(I'm basing this on Ct laws of course, your states might be quite different)
In Ct, either party can bring a civil small claims case to the main docket. Assuming the other party wishes to take this route, you'd be SOL.. For a 600-800 dollar sum...
Cash makes sense.... upfront ! You must have some type collateral

While I don't advocate dishonesty in any case, My own feeling is that screwing the small businessman is truly a sin ! They all work hard ! Whether they are contractors, or entertainers...It's just extremely cruel IMO....It sickens me to know there are people that feel this is easy to do.
