A couple of years ago we went to the Mickey Gilley show in Branson.. All his singers were using similar mics..  Ill give you 3 guesses on what Mickey was using...

I think she might use Coles, or Royer.... Not sure.... If-so these start at $1500


I'm trying to find out what Harry Connick uses, but I suppose that doesn't really matter,  They use microphones that suit their vocal timbre, venue, and one might sound excellent with the Shure SM-86 (I think COnnick used that), Tougher to find what SHE uses for her vocals... These folks have amazing ears however... God only knows....I've been surprised to find out some just use regular production stuff at times...

have you ever seen the movie clip Karaoke for the deaf? If you havent you really need to. I cant find a really good clip but here is at least a site that doesnt bombard you with naked women

Quite honestly,  If it actually were as simple as purchasing the same microphone as a vocalist you like, that would enable you to replicate their vocal quality, and skill, I'd GLADLY pay quite a few thousand on several different microphones   .. There's alot more involved of course.  Specifics of their voice, room acoustics, PA head (some get warmth using a much more costly PA setup), are they running direct into a board before we hear them ?  Speaker config.... FX if any...... Positioning of the microphone, and how it works when there's a piano nearby, EVEN whether or not she's only using one microphone..... So many things..., studio mixing....etc etc.... So many factors...

I'm quite sure her bassist, and piano utilize (or did) one of those two brands.... Vocally I'm trying to find exactly what she does use, if she favors some setup, etc...

Sorry,  I didn't mean to come across that way... BELIEVE ME,  I wish I could buy a microphone that would enable me to sing without animal control throwing a net over me   I wish it was a matter of equipment that enabled us to sound like those we love the sound of....  I'm still looking for a guitar to enable me to sound like a few I admire....  (and I already own 37 electrics)  

Krall is just an amazingly gifted person !   Few who've played a lifetime can do what she does...

If you like her,  I've recently been listening to this sit-in female jazz pianist who sat in my nephew's Hall HS, Jazz ensemble.... To me... This women is another D. Krall... They exist.... but what they can do on piano is more of a nuance.... Not sure I could EVER do some of the things that require such dexterity..... My brain just aint that great  


My jaw drops each time I watch Krall.... and it even invigorates me....Gives me hope... Then the reality set's in.... I'm already 50...It's NEVER going to happen for me.. I've also been playing piano since I was 3 (roughly).. Parents had me pounding on the thing long before I could talk.... Mom taught piano while I was in the womb....GOD I wish I could do half of what Krall does....

One last post on Krall..  There's ALOT that goes into her recordings.  Have you ever heard her live ?  Or just in the studio on CD ?   The sound isn't always that great... Here's something that might interest you..

The Shure Beta 58A is a great mic.  (was)  Just don't ever pick up a Beta 87A.  It'll cost you about $100 more than the 58.  And then you will also think the 58A is a "good" mic.

Now you have me curious as to why that is Kelly.  All I see is that the SM-58A is 50 Hz-16,000 KHz vs SM-87A 50 Hz-20,000 KHz.. But the SM-87A has the three stage pop filter, bass roll-off and other features that I assume are good for something...,  Is it just too clean a microphone ?  better for studio applications ?  I don't know...  I'd hate to think Shure has a 250 dollar microphone that's a gimmick, and really a lousy microphone.... Too much treble for vocals ?

The sm-87a is a condenser mic which is powered The 3 stage pop filter reduces wind and breathing noises The lo freq roll-off is for in Shures words "optimum performance for close-milking applications" I always assumed that was for instrument applications.

My main Mics on stage are Sure. They are an older model that is discontinued. But they are great sounding. I like them better than sm58 or 57. Don't have them here at moment, so not sure of the nombers. I do know, that they had Gold versions of the same Mic. My prefered Mic is the AKG D-880S. BUT, It's not great for inexperienced users on stage, as it's pick up is so sensitive, it feed backs real easy. Everything being set equal for final volume, I have to be another 25 to 40 % farther away from speakers than with any of my other mics. So I just use it in studio. I also bouoght a cheep ( $14.00 CDN ) wireless home karaoke mioc. Other than picking up too much of the handling sounds ( hands ) it sounds amazingly good. I use it as a back up incase a cord goes bad, I have it plugged in ready to go. I have used it as I had 5 wanted thier own mics one noght. Geez.. Some of these low cost mics are really pretty good. Not something that can take a beating like Sures, or be studio quality like the D-880S, but for most Karaoke uses, they do fine.. except for when you get real singers..

I have a couple of the shure beta green series They are rugged but not 58's.. Also have a shure axs 1 and axs 3. I use the axs 1 and a 58 on stage cant tell the difference But I lost the ball on the axs 1 it at a wild outdoor party a couple of years ago and it is discontinued Havnt been able to find one.. The 58 ball doesnt fit I used one of the beta balls but the axs 1 ball isnt as high as the others.  Thats what I liked about it You could really get close to the element

You're not the only one who thought that.  saw a guy on ebay lt one go for $100.  Somebody had given it to him and that's what he thought it was for.  You see this mic being used by many of the top singers.  Both country and pop.  It's a fantastic mic for vocals which it is designed for.  The 87C is similar.

Steve, all I can say is that to me this mic has a noticeable increase in range.  It could as well also be used for studio work. One of my shows we happened to have Kenny Chesney's lead guitar palyer come through town on the way to a gig in TX.  He stopped in and we got to talking and he kidddingly asked me "What in the H@!! are you using those mics for just karaoke.  We use those on tour."  

I started out using the wired 58A Betas.  I then ended up doing some research and got one wired 87A for me.  ( I do priviate functions where it's just me singing.)  I now have 4 Shure wirelss. 2 older models and 2 new SLX systems and I am using the 87A head on all of them.  I love the expression on the face of a good singer after they have just sung a few cords.  They tend to turn and look at me and raise their eyebrows and say, "WOW."

Yes I know they're expensive.  But I love the sound and that is just one of several things that I feel set my show apart from many of the others around me.

If anyone gets a chance, try them.
