This thread started out as an information post.   To help non singers and singers understand that they are not the only people in the bar that want to have fun.   The KJs also like to have fun.  And that although we are working we still might want to sing a song, if for no other reason than to "have a little fun also."

But there are also times when a KJ needs to exercise a little control over the situation, by singing an up beat song to keep the rest of the crowd entertained and upbeat.    You are the master of ceremonies and the entire flow of the night rests on you.   But that said it is mostly out of your control because of the songs selected by the singers.    This is where the KJ has to take charge and try to change or keep the tempo more alive.

Hearing someone say that the non singers can go to another bar is a stupid business attitude.    It is not logical to want to chase paying customers away.

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE...

ALL NON SINGERS MUST REPORT TO AND SIT IN THE BACK OF THE BUS.   YOU WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO A LOCATION THAT WANTS YOUR MONEY AND CATERS TO YOUR KIND.    WE ARE CURRENTLY MAKING TOO MUCH.   THE NON SINGER BAR, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS IS WHERE YOU SHOULD BE.   PLEASE DO NOT MIX WITH THE SINGERS.    SORRY TO DISCRIMINATE, BUT BAD BUSINESS IS BAD BUSINESS.    AND WE PRACTICE IT EVERYDAY.    WE CAN'T HAVE ANYBODY HAVING FUN IF THEY DON'T SING,   THIS IS A SINGERS AMERICA.    GO BACK TO YOUR NON SINGING ROOTS.   AND TAKE YOUR MONEY WITH YOU.   A good KJs dream. :asleep:

I posted this elsewhere but maybe it needs repeating.

Ya know the great thing about caller ID is that when a name comes up and it's someone you don't want to listen to; you don't have to answer the phone.  It beats arguing.

But those are YOUR reasons, don't lump all kj's into your 'information', I do not sing in my rotations unless warranted - ie no singers, request (end of round only & 1 song only) or a requested duet (in their spot only).  I do not sing any other time, it's not for me to sing, it's for the customers & i'm not going to take a spot away from someone else just because I want to sing.  I will go on my night off if I want to sing for fun - since my shows run 7 nights a week & I work 4 of them, I can go into my show on my night off.  But there are several kj's in the area that I am good friends with & network with & would support their shows as well.

I just ask the singers if they wouldn't mind singing something more upbeat.  If they do great, if they don't oh well.  My singing 1 song is not necessarily going to turn that all around.

Not sure where anyone actually said this.

Again, I don't know where anyone actually said this.  Maybe the non-singers don't want to hear karaoke at all, maybe they would rather hear dance music from the original artists?  Would you cater to that as well?  Non-singers in a karaoke bar are there for karaoke majority of the time - at least that been my experience.

I'm the only KJ in the whole entire world that likes to sing?     Wow... have I got it all wrong.   I'm a one-of-a-kind. :O

Sing two songs and call me in the morning.   Careful it could cause you to smile. :D

No probably not, but IMO a kj shouldn't sing it is taking spots away from paying customers - but if they must, do it in very short rotation situations, every other round.  Once a rotation gets to a certain point, that kj should not be singing anymore.  I have fun at my shows without the need to sing.

As I stated before, I don't sing all night, but if the need is there to put a little upbeat into the mix, then I do it.    It's good business to want to keep EVERYBODY happy.

I see people leave, if they don't want to hear "Mr/Mrs. Horrible Singer" scream out another one.    I see how people react to too many slow songs.   I see people react to too many country songs.    I read a crowd very well.   I don't want anyone to leave early, because it's too boring.  Many times the songs people pick to sing aren't the right mount of toe tappers that are needed in a four hour period.    All you have to do is sit in a bar for four hours and see the selections people play on the jukebox.

And yes, you are right about one song not being able to help much.   But it's certainly better than none.   It may get them to think that there will be more on the way.   To do nothing is like commiting suicide.   I would rather go down trying than to play dumb and let it slip away with out a fight.   Too many cheaper wolves at the door, to be screwing things up.

How do you expect people to take you serious, when you are now resorting to calling people dumb because they don't think like you!

This is a test.

Do you think it makes good business sense to say that the nonsingers can/should go someplace else?

And the KJ should not want to try and keep every paying customer in the bar, whether they sing or not?

Your answer will reveal everything, I need to know about you.

Come on now!  IQ?  How would you know what his IQ is first off!  And really, isn't this supposed to be a site where all can get a little eduacation.  Some of us can come on harsh, but really he is probably a (@$%&#!) cat at heart.  Or puppy.  I don't think he is trying to really put anyone down.  I think he means well, and maybe does has some great experience.  I have to say I practiced a lot of what he does and says.  I learned from someone who I felt knew the best, and had a fabulous business, I do know that we did what worked for us.  And if it works for him, and he is making money at doing it, that is all that matters.
You can do whatever you like.  But I think too many people are taking to heart this whole forum.

The answer to that pop quiz will tell me all I need to know about you and your level of business success.   Answer if you dare.   It's Friday night, is everyone in bed?   I know you're not KJing you're all on here.   Anyone with  1 I. Q. point could answer it.   1 I.Q. point wrote it.    Took me a while.

I think before you say anything to me you should read all the posts here.  I did not start this attack...BigDog did.

His quote!
Now I know why you are KJs and not bar owners.  You aren't smart enough to have the 40 IQ required for the license.

Your bar owners are being so screwed by you.    You seriously think you don't need to have and keep nonsingers.    What planet is this?  This must be the Last Comic Standing, right?    Where is the hidden camera?

As you can see he attacked me because of my explanation on how things were run at the bar I work at.  He attacked my character, my bar owners character and had the nerve to say I was scr***** them!

With all of his great knowledge he also informed to me change my name to
Karaoke Idiot.

So yea... I still wonder about his IQ.

I'm far from taking it to heart.  I'd have to believe it first...

We learned about being KJ's initially from doing what we'd like a KJ to do when we are singers...  Pretty basic.  We want a good rotation and a KJ that seems as if his/her job is fun.  I've been around people who come across as someone who feels their way is the only way and have found that their condescending attitude could be hiding other issues.  I'm not saying this is the case here but.....

How do you think he is not trying to put anyone down?  Interesting as it seems that many of us do think his posts come across as putting EVERYONE down who does not believe and do as he says he does.  I would no more take the advice of a Mayor on how to be a Chef without proof that he has actually worked as a Chef than I would take Bigdog's word for being a successful KJ and change my shows to match his shows (which has not been proven).

Susie :)

I made a general reply to the entire thread.   I named no one in this big attack.  It was a general statement that said exactly what I meant.   That anyone who thinks that they are only hired to have singers and to not try to entertain and keep as many people as possible in the bar, by whatever means, is costing the bar owner money.    You are not doing a good job.    I would not hire you.   To say that the non singers can go someplece else to hang out is totally irresponsible as a business owner, yourself.   Your pay is based on his total cash register.  If he paid on just what the singers spend, they mostly drink free water or cheap soda.   You would command a very small paycheck.   That bar needs all of the money he can generate.   That's why he has any type of entertainment.    When I am in a bar, I treat that bar and everything and everyone in it, as if I owned it.   That includes the amount of money I can make for the bar.    Not chase away or not want.

How come nobody worked tonight?   Nobody wants to answer this question.

And there are many things ( technical ) that he said in his post that should not come from a person who claim he is the best

How would anybody believe anyone is in business to chase people away for not being a singer.    How do we know you do karaoke?   Is that a Full House of singers or non singers?    LOL   How do I know Jian isn't really Jackie Chan?   Is that really President Bush or a Russian look alike?   I'm an idiot, an A**hole and liar, according to the experts on here.  (You are coming real close to animal abuse charges.)       Not necessarily in that order.    What else do you want me to say?    I know how to make lots of money doing karaoke.  I have made a lot of money doing karaoke.    You can believe it... or not.    Doesn't hurt my income if you are a non believer.   Doesn't hurt my income for you to ignore any of my proven money making suggestions.    I'm not going to put anybody to death, if they don't want to use them.   I know how good they work for me.    I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.     But I will still be making money 5 nights a week.   As I have been doing for 14 years in August.    I.. should.. be.. selling.. them.   LMAO

Come on ... at least throw me a bone.   I have learned some new tricks on here.
