I set up my Tivo last night to record his shows after someone e-mailed
me a clip of him splitting a woman in half on a park bench. Seems like
he has everyone talking.

Bab's, Was this the show you saw ? He's probably doing that with a prism. Not so sure people there are seeing a tiny person without legs running around the grass. Another option of course is that Emily is a Dwarf.. LOL What we don't see is what goes on between the time he has the person lay down on the bench, and when he throw's the black cover over the waist of what's two people likely.... That might be two dwarfs from a circus act he's using that he throws baggy clothing over, and uses props to help support one on another's shoulders.. Might be one dwarf and another person scrunched up on the bottom.... who knows... , but it's freaky

I've been fascinated by illusionists all my life. Blaine is one of the best I've ever seen. Part of it is his personality which is both friendly and vaguely scary at the same time. He has also taken a completely fresh approach to illusions that have been done for years. I would very much like to see him in person just so I could be certain that there is no camera trickery involved.
Some of his more recent stuff I'm not too impressed with. The seeminly death defying stuff is just that; seemingly. Houdini did similar stunts as have many illusionists since him. All of his escapes, spectacular as they were, required accomplaces or "cheats" of one kind or another. That's not to say that they didn't all require skill as well. Houdini was able to escape from all kinds of locks because he always had a lockpick with him and he was an expert at using it. Most of us do not have the knowledge or dexterity to pick a lock.
So I think the secret is that while these people do not perform magic, many of their illusions require a high degree of skill and/or flexibility that the rest of us do not possess.
I've always found it very interesting to watch the shows, be mystified and then try to figure out how they did it. I haven't been very successful but it's always fun to try.
For years I tried to become an amateur magician. I bought books, props, etc. I was never any good. My manual dexterity is lacking and I do not have the inate talent for misdirection. Nonetheless, I can appreciate the incredible skill and in Blaine's case, the creativity that fools me even when I know I'm being fooled. I think that takes great talent.

Yep Michael, These are talented guys. Whether I like some of what Blaine does or not, sort've like skydiving and bunjee jumping, and sheer cliff scaling... Since I don't have the gut's to do it, likely will NEVER be able to do it, there's still an awed-fascination with a person who has the guts to stand on a small platform 80 feet in the air for a day (with no sudden escape route down)...and jump onto a stack of boxes.. Starving himself for that duration I think was quite foolish however.
ALL of the "extreme" sports types of activities fascinate me, I spend hours watching Hanggliders, BASE jumpers, Extreme open circuit divers, etc. I have some pretty good footage around. Since I'll never even cross the royal gorge, New river gorge, or Perrine bridges..... Watching people jumping off've them has a certain captivating element for me. Same as watching people doing flips off've red rock.
Michael, go to the You tube Red rock diving areas

I like magic tricks too MIchael. Not all of us can learn them... I bought this "Learn how to juggle" video, and destroyed ALOT of stuff diving around, falling into things, and knocking crap off've shelves.. .. I try one-handed shuffles with card decks, and it's "52 pickup".
