Some of you guys are really nuts!  I think that's why I like this site.

The tallest thing I ever jumped off was the 3 meter diving board in college and I knew how deep the water was in the pool.  It scared the crap out of me the first time but after I got used to it I could do all the tricks I did off the 1 meter board.  The big difference was that if you screwed up, it hurt a lot more from the 3 meter board.

About the only thing I can add to the discussion about violent storms is that statistics notwithstanding, growing up in Nebraska it sometimes seemed as if we were the tornado capital of the world.  They haven't killed too many people out there because the population density is so small.

I've seen a tornado or two from a distance and I've been close up in one "small" tornado.  I can honestly say that I not only have no wish to repeat the experience, I would just as soon not be within 100 miles of one again.

The power of those things is just devastating.  I can't figure out how someone who has ever been on the scene to view the aftermath of a tornado would ever want to be close to one.  

I may be a coward in this regard, but I'm a live one which seems preferrable to the alternative.

We are pretty familiar with tornados living in Oklahoma City Metro.  Our home and business are right in the path the tornadoes have taken in the past but it seems they've moved a few miles West now.

Richard helped after the 5/99 tornado here.  He had to have clearance and a badge and he delivered water, gloves, etc from the back of the Ford Ranger we had at the time.  He met some incredible heroes...

I helped in the High School which was set up as a mini store location for food, clothing, furniture, etc that had been donated to the victims.  I met some incredible survivors, some who didn't want to take more than they would absolutely use so that someone else didn't go without...

Tornados and sharks are my biggest fears. I've lived through at
least 3 tornados I can remember vividly. No I didn't live in a trailer
park.  LMAO Remember a few years back when Utica, Illinois was hit.
I grew up about 2 miles from there, by Starved Rock State park for those
of you formiliar with Illinois. We actually had a tornado shelter built into the basement. The funny thing was there was rarely time to make it down there.

I still to this day can't sleep during a thunder storm.

While about 70% of Tornadic activity in Illinois is at best considered an F-1..  A few of the worst twisters in US history hit that area (and a few surrounding states)... Around 1924 or 1925 almost 700 lives were lost in Illionois during a tri-state twister.

More recently(mid-1970's) Xenia Ohio got a MASSIVE event too, clusters of twisters..... Michigan get's it's share as well.... Tornado Alley is only a rough location... The WHOLE central-midwest area get's twisters,  Not just Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska....etc.. The Xinia Ohio group of twisters was massive..

Babs, I recall seeing the aftermath of the Utica tornado on TV.  It was a particularly bad one.

By the way, there are sharks in Illinois.  But stay away from the Shedd Aquarium and you'll be just fine.  LOL

As it turns out all conversation in this thread about storms has been pretty timely.  Wisconsin got hit with some pretty heavy weather last night.  I haven't heard any reports of tornados but most of the storms generated wind gusts in excess of 60 mph.  

A gust of 82 mph was recorde in Monona which is a suburb of Madison.  

I was up about 3:30 AM watching was was going on in my neck of the woods.  Not much wind but torrential rain for about 20 minutes.  What was interesting to me was that the lightning was continous.  I had never seen that before and I could do without seeing it again.  It was kind of scary with all those volts flying through the air all over the place.

Wow the storm last night was loud. I got home from work about 1:30 am. and fell
asleep, a few hours later bang! It hit hard. Some of the area lost power. It's still
raining now and it's still hot and humid.

In Idaho,  the owner of a 12 foot Burmese python had to pay for surgery for the snakes eating a full queen-sized electric blanket, as well as the controls ?  :shock:

What I wonder however, is WHY people allow such a snake to stay loose in a home.. That's of course yet another sign it's a stupid idea.  Additionally python's, or all constrictors are escape artists, they are VERY strong !  It's not safe for the outside world, (or the reptile) to allow it to be on the loose.. These are  preditors, monster's of sorts.... Why did this snake eat the blanket ?  The warmth ?  It smelled human scent, or animal scent on the blanket, and the preditory instinct kicked in ?   People don't think...  Enough have lost lives to pet snakes such as this... Burmese, reticulated, Amythestine, and African Rock pythons are NOT meant as "pets".....
