lol if I could scream in tune I guess I would do it...seems the harder I try the flatter I get so dont think the screaming is a problem....having said that, doncha just hate when some jerk walks up behind your mic and yells into it like it was the funniest thing to do in the world? I have stuck pins in dolls for less crimes ;-)

Well screamers were just an extreme example, a compressor well help even out dynamics of your voice where you can actually get a fuller sound & a little more volume from it - over the pa.

The point about saving your voice is you dont have to sing loudly into the mic in order to maintain a smooth and full vocal sound.

Depending on the compressor setting quiet vocals will sound as loud as loudly sung vocals.

Which model Alesis mixer do you have ? The documentation should explain optimizing the channel gain structure using the gain control and meters.

As for compressors, well you pays your money etc. Behringer make reasonable budget compressors. I have the 4 channel model, MDX4600 . The optimum way to incorporate one is into a channel insert point (which I don't think you probably have). Most compressors require a resonably high signal level to operate correctly. Without channel inserts on your mixer it would require some messing about to achieve the input signal levels ideally required.

Actually I've just had a thought.

Have you considered normalizing your backing tracks so that the music volume doesn't vary to much from song to song ?

I've used mp3gain on my karaoke mp3 tracks so that I only need to lift the master faders for an increase in total volume without fiddling with the relative levels between vocals and music.

This procedure might also relieve some of the pressure/necessity to sing louder at odd intervals through a gig.

I totally agree with you, however this was not my initial question. the question I asked was whether I was putting my powered speakers at risk by running them at very low levels. Sure my voice is strained at the end of a gig but then I am not a work to rule kinda girl it is rare that I pull the plug after 4 hours. Sometimes I am a part of a duo sometimes I am solo, if one sings solo for 6 hours then of course my voice is gonna be tired but its fine after a couple of days
