Hello folks, ive been looking about for some software to record me singing some karaoke songs (mp3 + cdg) on my computer. Ive tried Cakewalk and Cubase but they're all a bit techy for what im after. All im after is to be able to play an mp3 and sing on my mic over the top and ...well thats it. At the mo i have to record the backing track (mp3) through the mic coming over the speakers.

All help appreciated and great forum folks.

I found it very informative and easy to follow. Of course you have to get your hands on Cool Edit Pro to utilize the information.

I've used Cakewalk and Cool Edit Pro and I like both of them.

What are you using to play the MP3?  If you are using an MP3 player, you can go to Radio Shack and buy a cable to connect the headphone jack on the MP3 player to the stereo mic input on your PC.  Once you have the music track recorded then you can record your vocal on a separate track.  This works for both Cakewalk and Cool Edit Pro.

You can use this technique with just about any replay source.  For example if you play a cdg through a CD player you could use the headphone jack or, if the CD player has them, the line out put jacks.

Recording the music and vocal on separate tracks gives you more flexibility because you can adjust the volume and EQ separately if you want to mix them down and save the file or burn it to a CD.

Depending on the level of quality you are looking for from your efforts you'll need to become a little bit of a techy.  But it's not too difficult.  Just about anyone can learn the basics.

What I've written above is a pretty basic explanation.  If you don't understand it and need or want more detail let me know and I'll make it as detailed as you like.

You could buy RoxBox which has a recorder built in. then all you need is a program to convert the recording from wav to mp3. You can get roxbox at www.kjamp.com at a reasonable price.

if you do get your hands on Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition I did a help file on it for another group I belonged to some time ago. it includes pictures etc so should you require a copy let me know.  :read:

Hi ya'll  I mostly use cakewalk sonar 5 for my originals.  What I use for backing tracks is 3 programs at once.  The first is a free program call KaraFun.  Another one is called Blaze media pro.  And the last one is Guitar Rig for my vocal effects.  I find that I can get great sounding tracks from this trio of programs.  KaraFun is very good for playing the tracks.  You can change pitch and speed of the backing.  And of course get your lyrics on the screen.  With Blaze Media pro you can do your recording in all different types of media.  It has some built in effects and nifty things if you want to use it.  It is very easy to use.  The last is Guitar Rig which I also use with Sonar for all my Originals.  It is also a stand alone program that I use for my vocals.  It has some great presets for vocals and that is all I use anymore for singing.  Not to mention it is the most awesome program for guitar players.  I have a soundblaster audigy 2 soundcard.  It can record in 24 bit audio.  But thats overkill really.  If I use all these programs at once I have to change the settings on the soundcard to What You Hear.  So anything that is coming through the speakers can be recorded with Blaze Media Pro.  Sounds confusing, but it is the best way I find to record.  Anyway,  I hope I did not confuse anyone.  FubarSam
